Hakuna Matata - Running with the Reindeer!!!

Morning team!!! :hippie:

Hope all are doing well! Things are good here. Our principal (we call her Umbridge for a reason. Harry Potter fans will get that...) was here, but she's left the building so woohoo!!

Monday's run was kind of slow, but I didn't want to push because of having just run the 10K on Sunday. My legs felt oddly heavy, even considering the race. I figured out yesterday morning why that was (girls will get that one...). What fun. Yesterday I did level 3 of the 30 Day Shred for some XT. Today's a rest day! WOOHOO!!!!

I'm trying something new with my eating at the moment. I'm calling it "the great reverse meals experiment"! You know there's that saying "You should eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper", right? (Ok, maybe not...but it's been tossed around in diet circles for a while.) I decided to try it for a couple of weeks. With the slight twist of I'm generally eating "dinner-type" stuff for my first meal of the day (and hence more calories), keeping lunch and snack pretty much the same (they've been middle of the road anyway), and eating a smaller, "breakfast-type" stuff for my last meal of the day, hence there being lower calories in it. I realize that on long run days and race days it'll have to look a little different because I'm clearly not going to eat a full dinner before setting out on one of those. But rather than the peanut butter and banana smoothie I've been having pre-race or pre-long run, I'll do something like a peanut butter, banana and honey sandwich or something. Every day won't necessarily follow the same exact pattern, but I figured it would be fun to try and see how it affects a) my weight-loss and b) my energy throughout the day and workouts and stuff. We'll see how it works out.

in other news...

OMG ONE MONTH UNTIL THE HALF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 :woohoo:  :woohoo:  :woohoo:

Have a magical day!!!

Hi everyone! Another chilly day here so I'm going to run at the gym tonight instead.

Beth - Sounds like an interesting experiment! Keep us posted and let us know it goes. I have a tendency to eat a lot for dinner and not enough for breakfast (just oatmeal with nuts and fruit). Enjoy your rest day!

Lynn - I go down the stairs slightly sideways if that makes any sense. I find there's less pressure on my knees that way. Looks like lots of us here have knee problems :( How's your recovery from the 1/2 going?

Regina - I know how you feel - don't worry, there will be other races and you'll enjoy them more because you won't be stressed about the finances  And yikes! I hope you're okay! Is there any way to complain to the city and ask them to salt the sidewalks? The city here will send a plough to "clear" the sidewalks but because they don't follow up with salt - the sidewalks turn into a sheet of ice.

The sports doc didn't really say to do anything differently than what I'm doing now - I'm treating it with ART, Graston and did one session of acupuncture. He also made sure my chiro was making me do stretching exercises but he said other than rest, there wasn't too much I could do. I'm just going to take the first 1/2 of the race slow which works out since it goes through MK. If I'm feeling good, I'll pick up my speed in the second half. I did the last 15K as part of the Minnie 15K back in 2008 and remembered it was boring - lots of highway overpasses outside of AK and not much to see.

Connie - How was the trek to the grocery store? Hope the snow didn't get in your way too much.

Saylan - I saw the snow in southwestern Ontario. Yikes! That's a lot - is it another snow day for you guys today?

Margie - Still waiting on my CW-X tights. My friend is coming in town on December 23. We figured if he mailed them, they might take longer since it's coming across the border. I can't wait to get them. I also ordered a pair of capris as well - I'm hoping they won't be too warm for the full.

AFM - No boxing today as my trainer is out of town. So I'm going to run a few errands tonight - groceries, Christmas shopping and I also have to take one of my dresses to the seamstress to take in. I'm hoping she can have it ready for next weekend!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Hi Team.

I had an unusual day for me. I had a guys day, met my race walkers at the mall for a fast 6 miler, it was 15 degrees out so the mall won out as the place to train. Then after we walked the horse ferrier and I took off for the health club where he swam and I did a good stretching routine in the hot whirlpool and then we sauna baked. Then we took off for the mall again and did some shopping.

My foot felt ok, it's a little sore now after cooling down but it's much better. I got new race walking shoes in the new size 10 and I bought cushioned shoes for when I walk with Sally.:cloud9:

I'm making dinner for Sally and I for when she gets home from work then we are headed off for our hour walk together. I haven't been doing any LSD, some 6 milers with my walkers and up to an hour and a half (about 6) with Sally but no long stuff. I'm banking once again on getting to the start of the Goofy healthy and my fitness level getting me through.

We, my walkers and I have decided that we are not going to Houston next year even though we all qualified for the National Senior Olympics. With my injuries I wouldn't be competitive and the trip would be quite expensive. We decided to do the qualify for and compete in the 2013 games instead. They will be held in Cleveland. The have raised the entry fee to $165 and staying in Houston for a min of three nights and the travel down would make it quite an expense.

I hope everyone else in on the mend as I am.

Have a restful evening filled with visions of adventures to come.

Dave:hippie:

Margie- I too enjoyed breakfast! What a cute little place! My leg is feeling better but now I'm battling a cold/illness. I hope all is well at your bustling house! I think I'd like to walk on Sat am. My training only calls for 60 minutes so I think it would be a good test for me post injury/illness.

I need an update on Hagen!

Dave- I hope that foot is feeling better after all of the love you have given it!

Vicky- My leg is getting better! The PTs at work have been really nice/mean to me and have been using ASTYM on it as well as deep tissue massage. Thanks for asking.

One thing you could ask your trainer to help you work on are outer thigh strengthening as well as gluteal strengthening, this can help support the knees from a muscular standpoint and help alleviate the pain you are getting from a structural point.

Beth- How cool to be going to Italy and running there!

Sue- Sorry about the snowy run! I'm trying to figure out the best way to prepare for them here in Michigan as well.

Emily- I hope the presentations went well! Enjoy your Disney trip! Have you seen the dining coupon that is out there? If not let me know and I'll get you one!

Lynn- Glad you finally made it home safely!

Regain- The PTs told me to take it easy until it didn't hurt when I walk...so not a set time line but a "listen to your body" sort of thing. Sorry to hear about your bad snow experience! I hope the ankle gets better soon!

AFM I did some good bike riding last week to rest my calf. By Sunday it was feeling much better and didn't even hurt when I took a step! I did 40 minutes on the Treadmill at work Monday morning. Calf felt great during the walk and only a little sore throughout the rest of the day.

Went to a Newsboys and NewSong concert last night at a local church and loved it! Felt like I was coming down with something but ignored it. Woke up last night with a fever and VERY SORE throat. Called into work today and rested. I have started antibiotics and am feeling a bit better. Now if my stomach would settle down I'd be really good! Due to being sick I didn't not get my walk in today. I will try to get out Friday, if not Saturday for sure! Feels like forever since I've done a "normal" training day!

Take care everyone and stay healthy!!

Beth-your trip to Italy sounds fantastic!
Did you check it out to see if there were any races when you would be there?
If the cared enough to stop and help the person they would not be they type of people who felt it was a sacrifice.
What a blessing that we still have a few of these people around!

Hi Everyone! Sorry for the delay in responses.

Margie: Thanks. We were really stoked to get the CE. It's the same as the regular version but comes with an art book, mousepad, soundtrack (their music is amazing!), behind the scene DVD, some playing cards, and an in-game pet dragon. It's usually twice the price of the regular but it just comes with so much we tend to go for it. We also managed to each snag a free gaming mousepad. Only took a 2 hour wait in the blizzard for it. My bf pulled his car up on the curb so we could alternate turns in the warmth of it. Everyone in the line was so jealous!

We ended up with 2.5 snow days (counting the half day I got sent home in). My bf only got 1 and a bit but still, it was nice, and nice timing too! It meant we could try out the expansion right away. :cool1:

Lynn: Yep we made it and it was so worth it, to me at least. The bf says he's going to re-consider next time if the weather is like that again.

Regina: It's cause that's when school starts and it's thus a busy time of year. Seems like a large amount of time, to me though.

Vicky: Yeah, a ton of snow! I heard it's very centralized to here though. Did you guys get much?

AFM: Well, it's back to work after 2.5 days off. It was a nice break and I enjoyed it. I had to dig my car out again though. All the snow from Monday had frozen around my car so I couldn't get out and had to have a guy from my building with a shovel dig me out.

The roads are clear and good but that means I now have no excuse not to work out. I've been blaming the snow for not going (and to be honest, my schedule is so thrown off by the mid-week weekend I lost track of what day it is). I guess today I'll have to start back into the schedule of running. :guilty:

Morning all.

I may barf. Got the bib number for the half. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! Excited and nervous. It's really real now!!

Nikki and Margie ~ Not sure I'll be running any races while I'm there. I'll probably ask at the hotel about running routes so I can get in some workouts. We shall see. :)

Good Morning Team!

Vicky – When the knee is really hurting I will go downstairs sideways and both feet on each stair, when I am feeling better, I will go down straight and only one foot on each stair. Recovery is going OK, but my pain seems to come back whenever I try to cut back on the Advil.

Saylan – Glad you enjoyed your snow days! Just jump back into your running schedule!

Nikki – Glad to hear the leg is better, pixie dust for your cold.

Dave – Glad to hear the foot is doing better, sounds like you did nothing but exercise yesterday! Sorry you had to cancel the senior games, but good training for the next ones.

Margie – Have a great “normal” day!

Beth – Good luck with the “meal switching”, let us know how it turns out for you.

AFM – Again nice weather and got out for a short dog walk, then made it for 20 min on the stationary bike. I should be able to do the same today, again extending the time on the bike. Temps are cooling tomorrow and we might get some snow, but not much. It will be really strange if we do not have a white Christmas here!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Oh, and Saylan, it's ok. A friend of mine is a World of Warcrack addict too (yes, she knows I call it that) and she hasn't been heard from in days either. :P

lol Beth! Yeah, it's really amazing the changes they've made. Sadly, it's a little sneaky in that it drags you right back in. I enjoy it more for the social aspect but right now it's something my bf and I can do together. We're both having fun just spending time together in it. I do try to moderate a bit though but with snow days that's just like asking me to play, you don't have to tell me twice!

Lynn: I will certainly try!

Hi everyone!

Saylan - We definitely did not get anywhere as much as you did. We had a light dusting and for the most part, you can still see the grass poking out from the snow. I was thinking that the snow days must have let you play a lot of WoWC. I've never played before but my friend's GF is into it big time too! The only game I bought recently was Epic Mickey and I haven't even had much of a chance to sit down to play. How's your knee doing?

Lynn - I like snow until Christmas and then it can all melt until next winter :) We had our first cold weather alert in the city last night. It was pretty chilly - I wore two pairs of socks to work and my feet still felt cold. Any thoughts about going to the doctor and getting things checked out just in case?

Beth - I'll bet you're able to find a nice route around CBR and get in a nice tour of the resort. I'm also really excited that the waivers and bib numbers have been released. It just makes everything seem a lot more real!

Margie - I find myself struggling to stay awake some nights if I'm watching a TV show that goes until 11PM. Have you seen the Just Dance 2 game for Wii - that looks like a lot of fun but am not sure if Hagen likes games like that. Another fun one is Wii Party - always good for a group!

Nikki - Glad to hear your legs are doing better! And funny you mentioned the glute exercises because my chiro is going to start doing those with me. She was trying an adjustment on me last night and noted that the stretch or movement she was trying to get me to do was really difficult on my left side. Meaning that I couldn't even move my left leg into a neutral position for that stretch :( No problems on the right leg (what else is new :) )

Dave - And I thought Disney was expensive! Yikes! Does the fee only get you in to qualify and if you make it, do you have to pay another fee to compete?

AFM - I decided to do my 2 miles indoors on the TM seeing as how it was about -10C (or 14F) outside last night. Plus I figured the TM would be a bit softer and non slippery so just better all over. I was also scheduled to have a chiro reassessment last night so it worked out well. Actually as I was running on the TM, my chiro happened to be out on the gym floor with another client. She said she was able to watch me run for a minute or two and noticed a few "funny" things. She said I have a stronger stride on my right side and so I'm able to pull my right leg and arm back farther as I'm running. She said she noticed on my left side, my shoulder was positioned higher than my right side (which I think is from me keeping my shoulders tense) and my stride was not as long. Finally, she said I have to stop running hard … meaning that I really stomp on the ground as I'm running. She wanted me to first of all slow down the pace and work on a lighter landing which would be better overall for my joints and body. Then we'd work on the other stuff… She also noted during my assessment that everything was really tight (no surprise there) so she was able to do a few adjustments for me as well.

Tonight, I have a quick training session and then I'm going to hop on the TM and do a 3 miler. Hoping to be able to play some Epic Mickey when I get home … Is it just me or does time just fly by when you're playing a video game?

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicky ~ Apparently they truly haven't yet. The person who started the thread got a message asking her to take them down because there are data errors on the forms. Oops!

Yikes! I think the same thing happened last year. Thanks for the heads up Beth!

Good Afternoon Team!

Fly-by today! Hello to all & continued pd for all in need.

The last 2 nights have been cold runs with wet feet but that's my choice.
Still can't face going inside & running on the dreadmill.

As usual weather will determine what is on the training schedule this weekend.

Happy training all.............Sue

We finally got into the link and got our Bib #s

Sally (Salee) half 38122

Dave half 37077

Dave full 16969

It's gonna happen, Yeah Baby!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Dave:hippie:

Margie- I feel MUCH better today! I was able to go to school. Took a nice nap when I got home to help recover. It is really just an uneasy stomach right now. I hear the home school plays are always so good!

Lynn- Did you get your workout in today? I was beginning to think that we in Michigan wouldn't get a white Christmas either however with snow in our current forecast I am sure there will be PLENTY of the white stuff to go around!

Vicky- Sounds like your chiro's there in Canada are MUCH better than the ones here, or at least the ones I have dealt with! How great that she was able to watch and analyze you running! I asked for Epic Mickey for Christmas and hope that I get it!!!

Sue - Way to be sticking it out in the cold for your runs! I admire that!

AFM- I made it to school today, and then had to take a 2 hour nap to recover from my classes. I have made headway on my Christmas card list but other than that it has been a very low key day as I continue my recover from illness. Now off to watch Prep and Landing!!! SOOO EXCITED!

Hakuna Matata Weekend Racers

:cheer2::cheer2: :cheer2::cheer2:

Saturday, December 11th

Beth - -NYRR Jingle Jog 4M race

We are Cheering for You!

Awww thanks guys! :) My first 4-miler. Hopefully it'll go well. The past couple of training runs haven't been the greatest, but I've kept going. It's supposed to be out of the "frigid" temperature range, so that should help.

Today's XT - I'll probably do a DVD. Which one is to be determined.

Weight loss? Up to 36 pounds lost!!! :woohoo: I'm about ready to truly call sleep the magic bullet. Yes, I've tapered my calories much better this week, but overall the number is about the same. Exercise amount is about the same. The primary difference is 3 nights with 8 or more hours of sleep. They say there's that growth hormone that releases at certain deep sleep points that you don't get if you don't hit those deep levels of sleep. I think I'm about ready to fully believe it!

Today's plans... School, Trader Joe's, workout, laundry (I put it off as long as I can since I have to walk there with my cart), sleep. The Trader Joe's part is potentially put off until tomorrow, but it can't wait until Sunday. We shall see.

Have a magical day!!

~beth

Good Morning Team! Really beautiful sunrise this morning!

Vicky – After my knee surgery – a year ago plus – the doc’s indicated that after a year the knee would be as good as it will get until I get a knee replacement. I still have not done the weight training that I should be doing and have not lost the weight I should lose, I want to give those a try before heading back to the doc. Most of the time it is tolerable, especially when I am active, the problem is getting up after sitting for any period of time.

Saylan – Hope you get more snow days to play your game, or should we hope for nice weather so you will get out and exercise instead?

Sue – Hope the weather stays good enough for you to train outside!

Nikki – More pixie dust to help your recovery! Yes, weather is still not too bad here, it has been very windy, but it has been warm enough that the wind is tolerable (50 degrees and 35-45 mph wind). It will change tonight, cold front coming in with some snow.

Dave – Everyone is getting excited about getting bib numbers!

Beth – Good luck on your race tomorrow!

AFM – Another 1.27 mile walk with the dogs and 30 min on the bike downstairs, then watered the trees (involves walking back and forth front to back moving hose – adding probably another mile to the milage), then hauled the Christmas decoration boxes and suitcases back to the basement.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Happy Friday everyone!

Beth - Good luck on your races this weekend! Can't wait to hear your RR! And I totally agree with you on the 8 hours of sleep!

Lynn - What's involved with total knee replacement? It sounds very invasive. I'm kind of glad that you mentioned that what your doc said about it being a common problem with women. Well, not glad ... but just not me being the only person with it. I think for 2011, I'm going to do fewer races and take a couple months break after the Princess 1/2. I still do want to run the 30K again and do one marathon so I'll have to take things easy.

Nikki - Yes, my chiro is wonderful! I was really upset after my PT left the clinic I go to in the summer but I'm very happy she's taken over my treatment. I'm looking forward to having my knee get better so I can start deadlifting again. I think that was a really great exercise for me glutes and hips.

Sue - Good for you for getting out there in spite of the cold and snow. The pavement is pretty slick where we are - the ploughs go through but the city doesn't follow up with salt so everything just freezes. Even when I walk to the bus in the morning, I walk on the roads because they're clear. Oh and Epic Micky is a lot of fun! The cut scenes are so much fun! The only thing I don't like are the camera angles - they get funny sometimes and it's hard to correct. And I think you can only save the game in certain places (but I didn't read the instructions so I could be wrong).

Margie - How are the little ones today? Got any exciting plans for the weekend?

Mike - How's your mom doing? How's your training coming along for January?

Regina - Has the snow in your area melted somewhat or are the sidewalks still icy?

AFM - I went to the gym last night and did a 30 minute training session. Did a mix of rehab exercises and core exercises. I also ran 3 miles but had to split it into 2x1.5 mile sections because I was a little bit pressed for time. I did manage to do 2 miles on each segment at 9:14 m/m and both felt pretty easy. The knee still feels okay too :) Yay! This weekend I'm going to try for an 8 mile run - hopefully on Saturday afternoon because the forecast on Sunday is calling for snow.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:
