Team Bios

Steffwalks, aka Connie - Captain. I am 53 years old, married with Two children and 5 Grandchildren living in the panhandle of Texas. First race at 49 years and 9 months and it was a trail race, just about killed me!! I am working on weight loss and P90X. I prefer the half marathon as a walker. My most recent hobby, mule rider!

Funwalker, aka Margie - Official Record Keeper of HK. walker. widow; I live in Portage MI
Did my 1st race when I turned 60, Full Marathon at the 2005 Columbus Marathon. I prefer Half Marathons for training and distance.

Windwalker, aka Dave and/or Panda - I'm 58 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually and I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Sally and I will be married this week.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn - I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare"time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away,so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

Motomiker, aka Mike - I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois and have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Rober). Working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan. and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

LynnG, aka Lynn - (of Lynn and Scott), 59 years old, retired We are both Disneyholics – we have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but since knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva - I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

MaryJ aka Mary I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

GirltheGecko
aka Hope. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

es45 aka Elizabeth: I'm 41 and married with 2 children, DD9 and DD6. I'll run my first 5k in July and walking with my best friend in the 2011 Princess Half. If I'm ready, I plan to run my first half marathon in late October.

piglet24, aka Regina I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. There has been a great deal of stress in my life recently that I do not have the ability to change right now, so I decided to try running to help manage the stress and give myself goals to work toward and focus on. Right now I’m working toward my first half marathon in October (Wine and Dine).

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k. Thanks!

Verticalchaos, aka Beth: I'm 39 and live in NYC. I teach students with autism. I'm a fairly new runner - started with the Couch to 5K program at te end of June. So far I've run 2 5Ks and a 10K - and I'm training for the WDW Half in January and the DL Half in September. And I may throw another Half in there somewhere. I've been actively working on losing weight since May and am down 19 pounds and at my lowest weight in over 10 years. No kids...just one very bratty and noisy Quaker Parrot named Benjamin Coffin the Bird (Benny for short).

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon!

Saylan - I'm from the frosty north of Canada and I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times) and I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

Just a quick note to help me find the thread later.;)

Connie, glad you can "see" us again. And yes, I'm wanting a medal.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Yay new thread!! :)

I'm doing ok. I think I'm over the hill of this cold now - last night was HORRIBLE, and usually that signals I'm on the downward side. This frigid weather isn't helping - though I'll think of the race Sunday as practice for cold in case it's all insane over Marathon Weekend again. I will say this... I don't want the weight I've lost back, but it sure did keep me a little warmer. LOL.

Last night I did Yoga Meltdown. I needed to do something and only had a little time (it was late after picking up my race stuff for Sunday), didn't want a lot of heavy cardio so I could try to go to sleep earlier (the nose and lungs had other thoughts on that), and didn't want to spend a lot of time upside down like I would in Bob's. So YM it was. I felt pretty good.

I'm headed to the gym after school to hit the treadmill. I figure I can freeze my little butt off on Sunday, but I'm going to be warmish today! Then I'll run home and drop off that stuff and go to running club's first Friday social (been researching drinks with oj in them. hee!). I'm supposed to go to a play after that, but if my cough is seeming like it's going to be a pain I'll skip. They're comp tickets anyway.

Tomorrow will be bloodwork (from the physical...he wanted me on hydrochlorot for at least a month) and then I'll probably do Bob's yoga or something after I eat. My appointment is at 10:45 and it's with fasting blood sugar. ***?????? That's a long time to go with no food!!!! Bedtime to 10:45am????? I'm going to be sooooo hungry!!! And I can't even take cold meds when I get up - I called to check if they still wanted to do it and if I could take meds. Sooooo annoying!!!! If it hadn't taken forever to find THIS appointment, I'd totally reschedule. (And no guarantees I wouldn't be fighting a cold then either.) Oh well.

Hope everyone's having a good day!! :)

~beth

PS ~ It's not a cruise, but I'm going to Florence, Italy February 18-24!! :)

Hi everyone! Happy Friday!

Just a quick fly-by today ... Spent the morning packing boxes of file to be archived. In all, I prepared 30 boxes! It felt like it was a mini workout - I'd say each box was about 10-12 lbs and there was lots of walking back and forth. Phew! Can I go home now :)

Got my sports doc appointment this afternoon so I'm kind of looking forward to hearing what he has to say.

Workout wise - I ran 2 miles on the TM last night. Kudos to all of you who run on the TM. I was bored out of my mind after 0.5 miles  and my gym has a TV set up. Did some training before that which was leg and core work. Did one really tough one that was a variation on the bird dog exercise. Same idea but instead of being on all fours - on your hands and knees - you're in a plank position and still balancing on one foot and one arm.

I'm going to try and run 3 miles on Saturday and 6 miles on Sunday, pending what the doc says. Other than that, I've got yoga on Saturday morning and then will probably go shopping with my friend on Sunday.

Sue - I'm going to try Epic Mickey on Sunday and let you know what I think. I've read reviews that have said that the camera angles are a problem - but have experienced that with most Wii games.

Nikki - pixiedust: for your leg! Any improvements yet?

Saylan - You could just go for the weekend Friday night to Sunday afternoon but you might feel rushed. Ya know... I heard that a lot of people tend to come down with a flu or cold that time of year so I'd wonder if you'd be feeling well on the Monday :rolleyes1 Just sayin... Ok but seriously if you wanted to do a women's only race closer to home, the Toronto Women's 1/2 Marathon isn't too bad. There are firefighters, chocolate ... but no, it's not the same as Disney.

Connie - Glad to see you've got your monitor fixed!

Okay, that's it for me - have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

Hey Connie!!!!

Welcome back!!!!!

will check back, just wanted to subscribe.

Have a great day all.

Welcome back, Connie.

With a price like that, you can definitely put me down for a medal as well.

Vicky: Oddly enough my bf thinks I might become  around the time of my class in the new year. Since I have the time off for Feb/March, being sick for a couple days versus a little over a week is easier to pull off. :rotfl:

Running on the TM can be boring but I like being able to break it down into numbers. When I switch to my run interval I tend to countdown the seconds by 5s or 10s while I watch TV.

I saw the therapist (well his intern really) today. Again, gave me exercises and said he'd be back to check on me. He was surprised when I was still on the first circuit of the exercises. I told him I had trouble with the one-legged hops and when I showed him, he basically said what I should watch for... I already knew what to watch for, that's how I knew I wasn't doing it right but he gave me no advice on how to correct myself to get it right. :sad2:

The fun part was he hooked my knees up to electro therapy. He had to crank it cause 1 out of the 4 pads I couldn't feel at all really. It was hilarious.

I've been 'cleared' to run 5 miles but no more in a given time. But then again they think I'm only running 4... I don't feel pain while running anymore but I felt some while descending stairs and definitely in lunges. The intern had me try some to see if it was any better and nope. It was so very very painful. His solution is to turn the back foot outwards a little so more of the load is on the thigh/inner thigh, and lean forwards a little. I didn't say anything but it seems to me asking me to put pressure on an angle on my knee when it hurts to do it straight on, seems a little counter-intuitive. :confused3

December is upon us and we are only a month away form the races at WDW. I'm not ready, not even close, in fact I'm nursing a hurt foot. But I will find a way just as the rest of you will, because that's what we do. We are athletes, that makes us unique and special. Some may think we have way to many screws loose and they may be right but we are what we are, warriors of life, we are doers and not observers. We live, we love and we fight tooth and nail against the demons of ill health and aging.

Thanks Margie! :)

It is going to be friggin COLD tomorrow. Like low 30s. BRRR!!!!!!! My planned outfit is tights, a pink long-sleeved shirt with my Front Runner singlet over it, and my new hat with ponytail hole. And socks and shoes obviously. I'm debating arm warmers UNDER the long sleeved shirt, but not sure if that'll be overkill or not.

I got in a few minutes early for bloodwork today. The guy who checked me in and drew it felt so sorry for me. He said they all keep trying to convince the clinic to reserve the slots pre-9am for those doing fasting bloodwork, but so far it hasn't happened yet. He jokingly asked if I could faint on cue. LOL. Proof that it's cruel and unusual to not do so and therefore people have to fast until almost 11am. Sadly I can't, and while I can do some acting, fainting has never been a specialty. He got additional bonus points because he found my vein almost instantly. That has NEVER happened before. I asked if it could have to do with losing 30+ pounds (OH! I'm up to 33 pounds lost!!) and he said it definitely could and then said "Congratulations! Um...as long as it was intentional." I thanked him for the compliment, but assured him it most definitely was intentional and I still had some to go.

Now I'm about to go get in a HOT shower and mentally prepare for tomorrow. I'm setting my reach goal as 1:15:00 given the cold temps and the hills. I'll be thrilled if I make it...but I'm not counting on a PR with the conditions. We'll see though, since I will be using a set run:walk ratio of 4:1 again.

Hope all are well!!

I'm up this snowy Sunday morning at 5:30 and nowhere to go. My 5k yesterday was a bust; I have to take some time off until my shin splints heal. It seems my constant running on the sidewalk is to blame. That, and running too long in a cheap pair of shoes.

Since I'm so new to running, I didn't want to invest too much until I knew that I would stick with it. I've since been fitted for new shoes but it was too late to prevent the splints.

One thing I forgot to ask at the doc. was if running on a treadmill would be preferable to running on concrete? I plan to build in some trail time (as the doc suggested) at a local park, but I can only do that on the weekend. Also, what about a cart path at a golf course? Would that be better?

Vicky: How did your doc appointment go?

Beth: How's the cold? You must tell us all about your Italy trip. Do you speak Italian?

Dave: pixiedust: for your injured foot. Your post was timed perfectly. It made me feel better about having to take some time off so close to my first half.

Hello to everyone else
; enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Good morning Everyone!

It's a fine cold morning, this morning! DH isn't feeling well. I am almost back up to exercising routinely. Last year's race, training and injury sure took a lot out of me.

DH and DS are in a Biggest Loser competition with each other. Sure does help me out! No more junk can come into our house!

Vicky - Do you have your tights? Do you like them? I don't like CWX. The way the seems are, they rub holes into my skin. I have really sensitive skin though. I have had to train DH not to rub on my skin in one place because in just a few minutes my skin looks I have a rug burn.

Sue - Good to hear from you.

Sweet Margie - You are the best! Did you get a new computer? Our computers went down, right on cue. I still think that one of the MS repair patches crashes it when they reach a certain age!

Dave and Sallie - As always the marathon weekend will go fine!

Elizabeth - Running on a treadmill is usually easier on the joints, especially if you can adjust it. Running on pavement is easier than running on cement. If you do a trail that's even better!

Gerry - Hi!

Jack - We sure do miss you! Check in more often!

Everyone else - See ya Soon!!!

Better go check on hubby. -- Connie

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us

Beth-we tend to over dress in cold weather - our bodies do heat up quickly.
The hard part is the standing waiting for the race to begin. It would be ideal if you have
someone who can take your coat.

Connie-No Kidding- Jon & DS are on a Biggest Loser compition! Kwel!

Oh My yes, to fine and try to replace files is going to be a long process-and
everythign is do different. I need to purchase Microsoft Home & business-Cannot
afford to replace the older Professional Edition that I had.

Dave & Sally-pixiedust:hope your foot is better!

Elizabeth-I am so sorry to hear your 5K was a bust,
but glad you are okay!
I too have a bit of a problem with the shins-
Stretching and warm up is critical. Nikki told me about rocking your foot back
& forth and that helps a lot pre walking or running.

:confused3 We are all different - and I would have to go s-l-o-w on the grass & uneven ground.
I had problems walking on the uneven Middle/High School Cross Country track for the Turkey Trot
- my legs were way tired and painful by 1.5-miles and I serioulsy considered stopping.

Gerry- :wave2: gald you stopped by!

Kim-pixiedust:

Nikki- hope your claf is better today and you are able to do the DM in the
Morning. Walking outside in the dark with the snow & slippery conditions might not be a great idea.

Saylan-sorry but I think your priority should be the Class Certification-
it can be life changing. Not that a race would Not Be and of course it would be funner!

Vicky- did you get your run in yesterday- thsi morning?

AFM:Normal Day: Exhausted so I Slept in –
Hope to get enough energy to go to the gym this afternoon-

(yes, I copied this directly from my blog)

Don't worry!! I didn't have seizures!!!

The Kleinerman 10K was not only my first 10K (and race) in Central Park, it was my first official New York Road Runners race! Woo!!!

I got up at 0 dark hundred hours to get ready and head out for the race. Socks and shoes, tights, long-sleeved pink shirt, Front Runners singlet, gloves, hoodie, fleece jacket, and skull cap with ponytail hole. Yeah, I was cute. Headed out to the G-train (to the L to the 4, 5, or 6).

That's where the stray dog comes in. Not on my platform, but on the other one, there was a really cute Staffie (aka Pit Bull) trotting back and forth. Not bothering anyone, just trotting back and forth and looking lost. Can't say the same for the jerk who was sitting on a bench complaining loudly about it but doing nothing (and sorry dude...if the dog was vicious, it would have chomped the heck out of you and I would have laughed). He was bothering EVERYONE. Some guy who looked like a security person for somewhere got the dog to follow him up the stairs, but the dog wouldn't go outside. Probably too cold. It wasn't long before the dog trotted back down the stairs. When the train came on that side, the poor baby was freaking out, not sure where to go at all. He ended up getting on the train just before the doors shut, so I have no clue what happened to him after that. I hope he is able to find a good home!!!!

The transfer to the L was not a problem. But the 4, 5 and 6 were running crazy slow. Like, hopstop said the trip should take me an hour and 8 minutes. It took over 90! I'm glad I left extra early. Next time I'll know to leave even earlier. At Union Square, a bunch of us just hopped on the 4, which came first, and then at 86th transferred to the 6 - which took FOREVER and we ended up with a train PACKED with runners. So FAIL on the MTA this weekend! And it's not like there was construction!!! Grr!!!!

Trotted over to Central Park and to baggage drop. Then hoofed it to my section of the starting area. By the time I got over people were moving up and colors were getting mixed in. People were just jumping in wherever. As they were doing pre race announcements, there were some snow flurries that drifted down! :) Yay!!!!

National Anthem was sung (not that this girl behind me knew it since she talked full-volume all the way through it even after she said "Why did everyone stop talking?" and then continued blabbering on) and the start horn sounded. We could see the front people start out and there was some movement at the beginning of the line. And then...

"We need an EMT to the starting line IMMEDIATELY!!" followed by "We need an EMT and a defibrillator to the starting line IMMEDIATELY!!"

Um, WHAT????? Already?????

Big thanks to the woman beside me who kept me from freaking out - reminded me that there are people who will take care of whoever it is and just to focus on my race. I still got off to a shaky start with all that. I couldn't really tell what was happening when we passed the area, but from what I understand, a spectator collapsed right as the race was starting and was apparently having a seizure, then stopped breathing or something. SCARY!!!!!!!!!

I decided to try the 4:1 ratio again. It wasn't my smartest decision with the cold and the hills right to start, but I ran as much as I could. Did more walking than I had planned for sure - especially on the hills. I did have some fellow Front Runners doing some awesome cheering on the course and a little coaching as well, so that rocked!!!!!

I did have that weird experience - not sure if it was exactly a runner's high or what - where I remember being on Harlem Hill and the next thing I'm aware of, I was at the other end of Central Park near Columbus Circle. Like around the time I started wondering where the 102nd St. transverse was or where the Delacorte was, etc. Apparently what I thought was the 102nd in my little bubble was actually the 72nd St transverse. Very weird! Obviously I kept on running!! There's no other way I could have gotten there. I was either concentrating so hard on what I was doing I didn't notice or else I just sort of went into lala land mentally. LOL. So basically I'm not sure about Miles 2 and 3 until I got to the bottom of Central Park.

More awesome Front Runners (well, the same ones but in different places) appeared around onto the bottom of East Drive. Linda ran me to Mile 4, encouraging me and coaching me all the way there. Somewhere around 4.5 or so I HAD to take a pit stop. I didn't want to, but with my cough, the fact that I had to KIND OF, maybe go to the bathroom meant that yes, I HAD to or things wouldn't have been pretty. Shortly after that I passed (again since they'd moved) "Koach Kelsey" and another of our guys (sorry...my ID is off a little right now) who were really encouraging. Once I'm done with the WDW Half I want to do some of Kelsey's workouts. I just don't want to mess up what I've got going right now.

Got to Mile 5 and felt pretty good. I knew the end was in sight, and I felt like I might be able to pull out a PR. Probably not my stretch goal of 1:15:00, but an improvement on my 1:17:19 from October. But I was a little conservative at that point because I didn't want to look like death warmed over crossing the finish line. LOL. I hit my last walk interval kinda close to the finish - but I decided I was just going to run through the last part of it and keep going to the finish.

Per my Garmin, which I stopped for the pit stop, my time was 1:16:18. I just looked at my results and the official chip time is 1:17:45. So I guess technically I can't count it as a PR (I don't know the rules on that). But I feel good about how I did.

Then it was off to BGB (Big Girl Breakfast) with the women of Front Runners. We had a bit of a goof-up at the restaurant in that while we had reserved a big table, another running club showed up first and the restaurant assumed they were us. Oops! But it was all good. And proving how my brain works or doesn't when I'm tired and hungry, I ordered...

A bacon, EGG, and cheese omelet.

Yeah...confused the waitress for a moment there. I rule!

But yes. I have now completed a 10K in Central Park. I have now completed a 10K in the cold - oh, and learned that apparently I need to dress for like 20 degrees warmer than it is as I ended up shedding the gloves and hat before or within Mile 2 as I was overheating. SOOOO glad I didn't put the arm warmers under the long sleeves!

Next Saturday? The Jingle Jog!

~beth

PS ~ Regarding the Italy trip, I'll detail that later! I speak a little and am working on refreshing and learning more.

UPDATE: The guy at the beginning of the race had a seizure and heart attack. That's all I know for sure. It's unclear among participants if he was a racer, a volunteer, a NYRR person, or a spectator. I do know that several racers sacrificed their times (it happened in/near like the second corral) to help him until the EMTs got there. Someone unofficially heard that he was "ok" as of the end of the race, but there's been no official word. Hopefully we'll get some update at least as to "the person's" status since virtually everyone racing is aware that something major happened.
