:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 33 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter). We have two doggies, one son (Gage) who is two and are expecting our second this coming January. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for United Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and two full marathons including the Goofy Challenge. My favorite distance is the half marathon and I hope that after the baby I can train to reach my goal of a sub 2 hour race. Another long distance goal of mine is to complete a 50K and eventually maybe a 50 miler.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

rubato, aka Tandy - Hi. My name is Tandy and I’m the mother of a fabulous 12 year old preteen son. :lovestruc I’ve been married to Frank (a non runner) for 18 years. I’m a full time student, going back to school to become a nurse. I have always run for fitness, but it wasn’t until my impending
40th birthday that I decided to become a distance runner. I love the miles and can’t wait to run my first ultra-marathon someday.

RunRookie, aka Rick - My name is Rick and I live in Crystal Lake, IL. I am married with three children (one 13yr old still at home). I am a new runner, having started in April 2011. My initial goals were to lose 160 pounds, improve my overall fitness, and to live a healthier lifestyle. Since then, I have run 15 races and lost 110 pounds! I am a big fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci-Fi in general, Disney, photography, music, movies, and technology/gadgets. And I keep a fitness blog at rickpeete.squarespace.com.

RadioFanatic, aka KimberlyI'm 39 mama of an almost 4 year old boy, will be 40 by the race; and was goaded into doing this past 1/2 by friends who knew I could do it although I hadn't run a minute in my life. I started training on May 1, 2011 by doing couch to 5k and the first day was miserable where even running that minute made me want to die. Since then, I've lost 70 pounds, ran the whole 1/2 and am looking forward to my new goal. I'm planning on doing a 1/2 in april and in september, my first full in october here locally and some other 10k and 15k runs in between and my second and most exciting full on the 20th anniversary at disney!

KippWade, aka Kipp - I currently live in Indianapolis, Indiana. My doctors visit in January of 2011 had me at my heaviest weight ever, 282 pounds. It was at this point that I told myself this has to stop. Before moving to Indianapolis in September 2010, I worked with a guy that ran. He told me a lot about it and I had mentioned that I'd had some Disney friends say that we should try a run at Disney World. He convinced me that even I could do it. It took me until March of 2011 to finally start in with the C25K plan. I registered for the 2012 WDW 1/2 in April and committed myself to running. I progressed to Bridge to 10K and then Novice 1/2 Marathon Training by Hal Higdon. Since that doctors visit, I've managed to loose 40 pounds of the 100 I want to loose.

tink06, aka - Stacey - I'm from NY (originally Jersey, but moved to NY with hubby) and have one cool DD who will be 10 in August. I started my weightloss journey back in Dec '04, was doing great, and then started the C25K in '06. I then found Disney Races, and signed up for the Marathon in '08 (I think?) I got to mile 18 and was cut off. Then I did the Minnie 15k, and got my bling. Followed by the Half in '09, and the Princess. Completed the SpaceCoast half later that same year (time was awful, but it was done) and attempted the full in '10. Really undertrained, bad weather, and screaming hip pain - got just past the halfway point and found myself once again on the bus! So... made myself a promise that for the 20th anniversary, I would make the 3rd time a charm and get that Mickey Medal once and for all! So I'm on a mission to shed some unwanted pounds, and get back into shape, so that I can start Marathon training come August! I will succeed this time, and appreciate the kick in the pants and encouragement for you all!

Found the new thread, I will copy what I just posted on last months thread.

Good Morning Team!

I still need to check to see if Vicky started new thread for Aug, but if not, I am still here.

Pretty windy today, do not know if we will get out again on the bikes, did a loop of our block this morning when I forgot the puppy poop bags for my dog walk, I had to go back around on the bike and clean up after the dogs. We got in 32 miles yesterday, and maybe because of the break for my dentist appt in the middle, I felt really good when we got home. Spent the rest of the day weeding.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Yay for August!

This is going to be a busy month, training wise. By the end of the month, I will have surpassed the 16 Mile Long Run milestone and turned in another 100+ mile month. The challenges this month will be staying healthy, working through the heat/humidity, handling some financial things, and losing some of the weight I gained in July (too many conferences!).

The other challenge is just one of logistics and finding time for family, work, training, and all the other 'stuff'. With DW in the hospital for the past week (and still there), my oldest DD with a torn ACL, and getting the other DD and DS ready for school in a few weeks, I just feel pulled in a million ways. Sometimes running feels like a great escape from the worries of life, and other times it is just 'another' thing to fit into the plan.

I am celebrating my birthday by taking my DS to the Chicago Comic Con on August 10th. I am looking forward to that. At least, I don't have any more conferences or work travel going on this month. And maybe I can find a weekend to go to our cottage in Michigan and just chill out (and do a Long Run out there in the woods, running around the Lake, avoiding bears, LOL)

Let's all work to make August a month of successes! And enjoy the Olympics!!! Go USA and Canada!

Hi everyone!

Rick - Another month of 100 miles! That's awesome! Lots of pixiedust: for DD and DW! Who's going to have more fun at Comic Con? You or Ryan :) Hopefully you won't meet a bear if you go running in the woods. That would be scary!

AFM - I did a workout at the gym yesterday. I didn't win the July fitness challenge they have. The winning time was 1:45 or something like that but the girls who are getting closer to 2:00 also weigh about 20-30 less than I do so I can't compete on the body weight exercises. Then I saw the August challenge and I'm definitely out for that one because it involves chin ups (no jumping allowed). I can barely do one LOL I did give it a try with my chiro and he thought they were too hard (not just for me). The exercises were something like:

15 seconds on the balance board with it balanced, no touching
5 chin ups
frog jumps
squat and press
jumping lunges
shuttle run

I did a 13.1 mile run on the TM on the weekend. I woke up late on Sunday and it was smoking hot at 9AM so I ran inside. I'm planning to do a 15 miler this weekend - most likely on Saturday but that's suppose to be the hottest day unfortunately. I can't go on Sunday or Monday.

The women's marathon is on Sunday morning. It starts at 6AM. I might record it and watch it later in the day. I think the 400m run is coming up too!

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - We are recording all the Olympics coverage, then fast forwarding to the events we are interested in.

Rick - Pixie Dust for your family! Have fun at the Comic Con!

AFM - Got in 16.5 miles this morning, Scott took the time trial bike and did some sprinting - his Senior Olympics events are next week. He is doing a time trial and a road race.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Thought I'd fully share my blog post from tonight:

"I ONLY went 3.5 miles tonight."

Yes, that actually went through my mind as I got back home tonight after my run.

Taking a look back at my blog from this time a year ago, I was just managing to get up into the 2 mile range while finishing out the month by getting up to 3.5 miles. And those runs were struggles each and every time.

I look back at those pace times and I now realize that I can easily WALK that pace now. My overall running pace might not be much faster, but it's also been in the high 90's regularly around here, forcing the need to keep it to a slower pace.

I look back at Saturday's run where I put in almost 6.75 miles and chalk it up to the fact that I "Just went further than I had intended to". Amazing.

I am upset that I've not been able to shed the pounds that I'd like to recently, but as far as fitness goes, I think I'm doing very well!

Work has been rough the past month or so, so just sitting back to this realization tonight just makes me kinda laugh a little.

I just needed a little bit of perspective.

Kipp: I totally appreciate what you've been thinking! I have been a little down on myself for the past few races because of the slow pacing, and a sense that I should be doing better. In my head I know that the heat and humidify and some pains in my knee/hip all contributed to that, but the rest of me was expecting more.

So I thank you for your posting. Looking back to last August, there would have been no way I could have run 14 miles back then. I was still training towards my first 10K and I thought 6 miles was going to kill me. Perspective is everything, right? I am in such better shape now than I was back then. And while I do fight against my doubts for going 26.2, I know that following my training will lead me to the Finish Line.

The same is true for you! We will have a great time this November at the Indianapolis Monumental Half! And then we will be totally ready for WDW 2013! I hear that the Donald medal will be a new design so that will be cool!

Joe Taricani of The Marathon Show produced a very cool video compilation of races in 2012 and I think the photos in it really capture the emotions and camaraderie that are the reasons why we run. And he grabbed photos from the Disney Marathon Weekend (including one of me finishing the Donald and one of Beth after finishing the Mickey).

After watching it, I almost went out for a run. But I was at the hospital bringing my wife home (yay!). So that celebratory run will have to wait until tomorrow morning instead. :)

Hi, folks!

Kipp: You're right. I need to remember where I was last year instead of always kicking myself for my bad runs. Two years ago I would have never dreamed of running a marathon but here I am. Thanks for the post :thumbsup2

Rick: So happy that Christi is coming home! Make sure we get a report on Comic-Con. Hope you make it to the cottage. Avoiding bears on your LR sounds like it could count as cross training too ;)

Vicky: You are amazing to run 13 miles on a TM. I can barely make it to 5 before my mind screams at me to get off from the boredom. Re: my shellfish allergy, I always carry Benadryl. Luckily, my reactions aren't strong enough to require an Epi pen.

Robbie: You are Goofy ready! Were you able to keep a consistent pace?

Kimberly: pixiedust: for the LR. Let us know how it goes.

Emily and Lynn: In our house, Olympic swimming reigns supreme. My girls have taken a big interest in the women's swimming events so we plan our evenings around those.

Dave: So glad to see you posting on here again about being pain free!:cool1:

AFM: I joined a burpee challenge thread on Fb. We started with 1 burpee and add 1 each day. Ouch and I am only up to 3! My last long run was 6 miles. My pace wasn't consistent but I felt great afterward. Next up: 7 miles.

Kipp: What are great way of looking at things, and you are totally right. If you get frustrated with day-to-day struggles, just look at were you were at a year ago. And I know it may be frustrating the scale is not moving, but I have a few doctor friends/relatives who have all told me the same thing: it is better to be overweight (per BMI) and fit than normal weight and unfit. I typically do not lose weight this time of year too…my appetite increases as the miles pile up. I don’t deprive myself, but I do my best to avoid the empty calories of junk food.

Rick: Glad you are getting you wife back home. Hope all is well. Great motivational video you linked to BTW

Lynn: good luck with your biking and to Scott in his trials

Vicky: what a great sounding workout, I would like to try it sometime. How many frog jumps, squat/press, and lunges do you do? What are the shuttle run details?

Elizabeth: Yes, I was able to keep it fairly even pace. As I got close to 20 miles, even though I was pretty sore and tired, I was able to keep my long run pace. Hopefully it will be the same when I chop a minute off that pace for the marathon! Hope your daughters are enjoying the Olympic swimmers. Go Missy Franklin! Both of her parents are Canadian so she is quite popular up here too. Good luck upping your burpees and mileage!

AFM: My July totals are in (thanks to Dailymile for easy tracking), and I ran 173 miles in the month! My plan calls for even more mileage in August, so wondering if I will hit 200.

I have been thinking a lot about my pacing strategy for my October marathon a lot lately (only 10 more weeks!). Everything I read recommends even pacing for each mile, or slightly negative splits. I can see the logic behind this, but my issue is the course I am running is very flat for the first 7 miles or so…then has 3 nasty long hills in the last 5 miles. It is awfully tempting to bank a little time early on despite what everyone has said. I mean is it really going to make a huge difference if my pace is 10-15 seconds per mile faster in the early going? Has anyone who ran marathons ever tried that out?

Have a good weekend all

Robbie

Hey all!

Robbie - WOW, I can't believe you ran 173 miles in July - I was psyched with my 111.55 and you reallly kicked rear - congrats!

Rick - glad to hear your wife is out of the hospital and I also request a comic con report!

Bunnyfoo - still can't believe you ran 13.1 on a TM 0 I think I would have gone :joker:

ES - what the heck is a burpee challenge - the name makes me giggle

KW - thanks for the perspective - you're right!

So, I'll be up bright and early tomorrow at 4:30 am to run my 17 miles - longest mileage ever for me! - I admittedly am very nervous but know I can do it - everyone pls think of me tomorrow - I need all the mojo and karma i can get! thanks!

Good Morning Team!

Rick - Glad to hear your wife is home!

Kimberly - 111.55 miles is nothing to sneeze at! Congrats! Good luck with your long run!

Robbie - Congrats on the milage! Personally, I would agree that if I knew the 2nd half of the course is worse than the 1st, I would conserve on the first half - but that is not based on any scientific study, it just makes sense to me.

Elizabeth - Our Olympic interest is cycling, but I do enjoy the gymnastics, and I saw some kayaking that was interesting, as well as the rowing. Of course, we have caught some of the swimming, as that seems what is always on when we turn it on! Good luck on your 7 miles.

Kipp - Congrats to you! It is inspiring to look back to when “I could barely go 2 miles” and compare it to where we are now!

AFM - Really windy today - 15 - 25 mph, so we just did 10.5 miles, but it was a great workout against the wind! The segments with the wind were really fun!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Happy Friday everyone! It's a long weekend here - just certain parts of Canada though. Yay!

Robbie - Not sure about the marathon pacing. I've only done two myself. Tandy paced for my first and the second Eva and I were stopping for pictures. I would imagine that you'd want to try and save a bit of gas in the tank for the end, especially with hills but I can't imagine that 10-15 seconds is going to be that huge. I'm not sure :) I did run a bit faster once when I did a 30K race back in 2010 and did a lot better than I expected. The fact that I knew I was well ahead of where I should have been in the last 5K really helped to keep me going.

This is the August challenge as it stands. I can't participate because I can't do chin ups which sucks because I can do the rest.

15 consecutive seconds on the straight balance board, no support (time doesn't stop until they have complete 15 full seconds with board not touching the ground)
5 chin-ups (can't be jumping chin ups, have to have athletically straight extension of arms and head above bar)
10 double arm squat and press (25lbs dumbbells for men, 15's for women)
10 Split Squat Jumps (full extension of knees while in air)

Elizabeth - The longest run I've ever done on a TM was 15 miles. I had my iPod with me and never really looked at the mileage until closer to the end. I ran in intervals of 5/1 and just focused on running for five minutes at a time. I varied the speed so I wouldn't get bored (and hopefully would finish faster LOL). Good luck on the burpee challenge! When I first started burpees a few years ago, 5 was a challenge. I worked up to a point where I could a max of 30 but haven't done that many lately. I did 20 for the July challenge at my gym and that was it. Good luck with your 7 miler! Let us know how it goes :)

Rick - So glad that Christi is home :) Lots of pixiedust: for her! Hope your run goes well! Will check out the video at home - they're blocked at work.

Kipp - No such as ONLY when you're out running! You got your mileage in so good job! I can definetely think back to a time when 3.5 miles was tough for me or even running a minute. Good idea on looking back to keep your perspective. I hope things are better at work next week!

Kimberley - I've got 15 miles on my schedule tomorrow so I'll definitely be thinking about you. I don't want to do run on the TM tomorrow so I need to get out early. With this heat and humidity, you gotta get out early to get the long runs done. Good luck tomorrow!

Lynn/Dave - :wave2:

Have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Hi! Enjoy your long weekend!

Looks like it will be a nice day here, not too warm today. We are planning a bike ride, then back to work cleaning for tomorrows MS Bike Team party.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day!

Good morning team!

Rick - Glad your wife is home from the hospital!

Elizabeth - Women's soccer is the main Olympic event for me, but I've enjoyed watching swimming and gymnastics. I'm also looking forward to track and field.

Vicky - Hope you got to see the marathon. I set up to record at 6am when NBC said it would be on and they're showing tennis instead :headache: Maybe they'll show it later today.

Robbie - Congrats on the mileage!

Lynn - :wave2:

AFM - We had a 8 mile long run yesterday. It went alright, I was tired at the end. But, it went better than out 10 mile long run last weekend. I was quite sore afterward, I felt like I had just run the actual race.

One of the 2 pools at our gym is closing later this week for maintenance. So, we might go for a swim today.

Have a good day!
Emily
