Hakuna Matada - Spooky October

Mike my most important races are next September and Oct time frame. I'm hoping for a win at the State games and a ticket to the National Senior Olympics in Cleveland 2013. I also want to make a good showing at the USATF masters championships in early Oct.

I will be doing a half about the end of April that is here in Bowling Green and then probably 3 other halfs during the year. Our buddy the Grammy winning violinest, is also the adventure planner and Sally and I go along for the ride.

Last Saturday in New Mexico one of my training partners took 4th place in a race walking half marathon, good showing since there were 250 race walkers there.

My little group of walkers have kicked butt this year, one is the Ky state champion and third in his age group at the National Senior Olympics. I won the walk class in the 10K Classic and now a 4th at a major half. We keep getting better.

Yes Tandy, rest is good. I just did two miles today since I'm raceing a 4 miler in the morning.

October
29 - Chicago Monster Dash half marathon - Mike

:bday: :cake: :cake: :bday:

party: Happy Birthday Scott!! party:

:bday:

Happy birthday Scott!! Hope you're having a wonderful day celebrating with Mickey!

AFM: I took Harrison out for a little 1.5 miler yesterday. He hated it so he ran as fast as he could. He has 2 tomorrow, so he'd better get used to it. I'm inspired by Rick and will be doing a 4 mile hill run today.

A 4-mile hill run? ::falnted:: :rotfl:

A 4-mile hill run? ::falnted:: :rotfl:

No, not 4 miles uphill. I would die. It's a 4 mile loop of nothing but up and down hills. So, I get lots of breaks too. :thumbsup2

Actually, I ended up doing 4.75 miles! Longest post injury run yet!!!!:banana:Not a time I would have been happy with before, but I have to remember that I need to take it slower. After I came home, I was going to lift, but decided that raking leaves counted as a good workout. I have half of the front yard done and need a break. I'm just trying to get the front done right now so I can mow one last time before winter weather sets in. Harrison and I will do the back this weekend, I hope. I need to eat and then I'll take the dog for a walk. He feels so deprived if he doesn't get a daily walk and I needed to sleep in today (I usually take him at 4:30).

I'm getting ready for my race this morning, a 4 miler starting and stopping at the HotRods ballpark. It's a run race but it's a good training for me anyway. I won't be last though.

How is everyone? Does anyone besides me think that facebook is killing the smaller forums like this. Kinda like WalMart killed all the small business. I find that I go there first and will often post there and no where else if time is short.

Have a magical weekend y'all.

Dave:hippie:

I wear gloves if it's below 50 degrees out, I don't like cold hands. I dressed well for today's race and was very comfortable once it got started. Standing around in the 30 degree temps waiting for the start was brutal though. I warmed up with some walking around the ball park before hand but it wasn't enough to make it pleasent.

We took off from the ball park and I thought that maybe this would be only the second race ever that I came in last since it was a run race and I was the only walker. I was stiff and jerky feeling the first mile, 11:57, and about half a mile later I started smoothing out about the time we hit the first decent hill, for the next two miles it was rolling hills. I hit the 3 mile in 36 min by my watch and then the course leveled out and I finished in 48:20. I started picking off runners when we hit the hills and I think I passed about 10 to 15, not sure exactly but I finished about 5 min ahead of the last runner.

This wasn't my best effort since I had no walker competition and it took a while to warm into a smooth walking motion. But I had intended this race to be a training walk anyway and for that it was perfect.

Dave:hippie:

Dave: Great job! I can only imagine the mental game you have to play with yourself when thinking you'll probably come in last. That's yet another thing that I think would be harder about being a walker. But, to be the only walker and pass all those runners has got to give you a big rush. Then, the runner has to deal with the mental game of getting passed by a walker (he doesn't know what an amazingly fast walker you are). :thumbsup2

AFM: I took Harrison out for a 2 mile run today. We finally got in our groove with our training. I am a run only person most of the time, but he likes a run walk interval. So, today we did 4/1 intervals, and he did his 2 miles in 22 minutes. That's perfect for him. I then went out for a walk with the dog and am going to head out again after dinner. I checked the scale today and am quite angry, so today's the day to get it back together!
I got the calendar out today and figured out my training plan in case I do my ultra. I am going to have to step it up a notch right away with a 6 mile run tomorrow and a 10 the following Sunday. I'm not sure the leg is ready, but I've run out of time to find out. The race is on April 1st and is 44 miles. I am hoping to get in at least 2 long runs that are over 30, and hopefully one of those is 36. That's the only way I'll feel confident to do it. So, I guess the next month or so will be a good test to see if I can handle the increase after the injury. I am in such bad shape compared to where I was this time last year. I know I ran Goofy, but just am not feeling like I am where I need to be. Anyway, enough pity party. Time to step it up. ;)

Good Sunday morning team.

Last week before my mini vacation in Gatlinburg nest weekend. It will be a rest and relaxation time. Lots of walking but the sight seeing kind of walking rather than the training kind. Maybe a little hiking on the trails for some bear watching.

I think our bodies need those breaks from training now and then for improvement. I'm racing well right now at 12 min per mile so maybe the rest will allow me to get into the 11s again once I start training after the rest break.

The next race for me is not till Thanksgiving day and then not again till the Goofy, so I'm going to be in Goofy training mode now instead of 5k to Half marathon mode.

Dave:hippie:

Hello team!

Thought it was time for me to catch up! Sorry work's been incredibly busy and I'm trying to get in my workouts, running and errands. Hopefully November will be a little less hectic :faint:

Dave - Congrats on your race! You must get some incredulous looks when you pass the runners! Good job! Did it end up snowing where you are? I also wear gloves whenever it's cold out - I don't like cold hands either and I always find that they make training walks/runs really unpleasant. Are you doing the 5K in addition to the Goofy in January? Yikes to the 12-hour shift but it sounds like you're making some good money for the trip :thumbsup2 Don't work too hard though.

I usually post on FB when I don't have time to post here. While I like that it's quick, it's not always easy to post a longer message or have the same interactions like we do here. I still prefer our boards to FB  but FB is great when I'm short on time!

Tandy - Wow! So you're putting the ultra back on the calendar! Did I ever mention that you are awesome! I can't even begin to imagine the mileage you'll have to pull for an ultra. :faint: But I have to ask if your physio gave you the clearance  That's just the worrier in me...

Tell Harrison good job on the running! Sounds like he's getting speedy and I'm sure he won't even need the intervals in a little bit. How did the party go for him? Is this a different girl than the one he gave a necklace to last year?

Mike - How was your race this weekend? Your costume sounds cool and easy to run in! I've seen some races where people dress up like superheros and they wear the mask and all! It must get hard to breathe running with a mask! The best costume I saw was a guy dressed like Elvis a few years ago. He had the hair, white tights and orange running shoes:goodvibes

How much is Hoop de Doo and what night were you planning on going? I have to say that I'm not very good with all you can eats though ;)

Rick - When I use to do hill training, that sounds exactly like what I would do. I hated them but they are great and when you come across a hill in a race, you won't even break a sweat. Plus, your speed will improve.

Regina - How was the wine tour? Did you find any winners? I've never gotten blisters before - from running anyway (knock on wood). What kind of socks do you run in? I find that when I use cotton socks to run or do faster walking in, they rub the heel of my foot and create hot spots. I'd say to check the size of your shoe and make sure you have enough room. Other than that, it could just be a combination of the shoe and your running gait. I don't know how to change that though ...

Lynn - Hope you and Scott are having a blast at WDW! Is he collecting lots of b-day goodies?

AFM - I've been getting in my running though it's much slower than I would like. I'm running at about 12 m/m and it's kind of hard knowing that it's taking me longer to finish my runs. But then I think at least I am running so that's a good thing :goodvibes

The eating and workouts have been going well. I've been losing about a 1 lb a week (except for my birthday week) so slowly but surely it's coming off. Winter running tights and my winter coats fit! Though the one coat I really like *just* fits so there's still a bit of work to do. :rotfl: And most of the stuff I make in my baking class goes to my family or people at work. Sometimes it's a bit hard to give that stuff away because I love eating sweets but it's probably better this way :)

I was a little bit bummed out about not going to Washington this weekend for MCM. But after hearing that they got hit with snow on Saturday, I thought maybe it was for the best :cutie: We had cold but sunny weather in Toronto so I'm hoping for a few more weeks before we see any snow.

I thought about making cupcakes this weekend but figured that I really didn't need the extra calories so I'll save those for another day.

Hope everyone else is doing well! :wave2:

Hi Team!

Vicky~ I'm open on what day to go to the Hoop De Doo. I have no real set schedule after the races. So I'm open to going any night after race weekend if anyone wants to join me? ( I hope someone does, or I will feel silly sitting there by myself :sad2:) The food is good, but the show is the real reason to go.

Dave~ Maybe you could make it up here for the Chicago rock and roll half? Tenatively scheduled for July 22nd?

Tandy~ RN schooling is tough. Most schools around here have a waiting list of almost two years, after passing an entrance exam. Great job coming back from your injury!

Scott~ got you on email, but a belated Happy Birthday here! I hope that you are enjoying the F&W festival!

AFM~ I finished the Monster Dash half marathon in about 2:33. My worst half of the year. I attribute it to the cooler weather, and sitting around on my butt. The race was fun, with lots of fun costumes and a beautiful course right on Lake Michigan. This weekend its back to the city for the Hot Chocolate 15k. Rick and two of Liz's girlfriends will be carpooling in together so it should be a fun time. I signed up to volunteer at the packet pick up, but I haven't heard anything from them yet.
My weight is staying the same at 226. With my lack of training and sitting around I'm not surprised. I need to borrow some of Dave's GRRRR and get back at it! I really need to lose at least ten pounds and really really need to up my milage for the Goofy!

~ Mike :cool2:

I am sooooooo not ready for winter. But at least I'm not shoveling snow like some of our buds north and east of us. I'm hoping for a snow free winter and a warm trip to Disney in January.

I'm headed off to Gatlinburg this weekend for 3 days of relaxing. Can you believe that Sally and I will be married a year on thursday? We are going on our little weekend get-a-way for our present to each other. Lot's of good walking on the hills and trails.

Today's interval day and I'm planning 4X 800m with a 2 mile warm up and a 2 mile cool down. Short fast workouts are my primary way to train for everything since finding time for the long stuff is difficult for me. Maybe a few 9 to 12 milers between now and Disney.

Have a great Halloween y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning team.

Dave: Congratulations on your anniversary! I know you'll have a great weekend. I think you're overall fitness is so good that you'll have no problem with Goofy even if you can't get those really long walks in.

Mike: Yes, the RN programs are super competitive. But, you want to go to a good school, right? Sorry you had your slowest run, but with the amount of runs you guys have been doing, it's bound to happen eventually, right? I find that while training for and doing races, I gain weight. It must be some kind of survival thing.

Vicky: I didn't realize you weren't doing MCM. Is it because of the ankle and knee or did the logistics just not work out? Good job losing the weight! You are so good when you put your mind to it. :thumbsup2 How is your Goofy training going? Yes, I was released to run, and the doctor knew what I was going to start training for. He didn't say that I was okay to run 44 miles, but he said I could start running. ;) I've been taking it easy for almost 3 weeks now, so I feel okay about ramping it up.
On the Harrison front, yes, different girl. It turns out that I know her mom, so it's all good. He had an amazing time at the party. There were about 50 kids there and it was 4 girls having it together, so it wasn't like a date or anything. I wasn't sure when he was invited.

AFM: I ran 6 yesterday and it felt amazing! I am feeling a bit more confident about the training now. I have been doing tons of reading on ultra training and am happy to hear that you are supposed to walk part of an ultra, unless you're competing. They recommend something like 25/5 or 10/2 intervals. I think I'll stick to something easy and do the 25/5. That way, I can keep track pretty easily. Now, I'm just going to have to figure out how to handle eating real food during a run. During Goofy this year, the Skittles didn't sit well at all. But, the bananas did, so I'll have to do those.

I had a pretty bad morning. Woke up at 3:30 for some reason. Took the dog out at 5:30. My neighbor 2 doors down was letting her dog out as we were coming home and my dog was on his 16 foot fully extended leash. He ran up and attacked this ladies poor dog. I mean ATTACKED! He bit the owner, her dog bit me, just a big old mess. Luckily, she understood that we were equally at fault (she shouldn't be letting her dog out loose and she does it everyday), but still. Not a great way to start the day. My knee is all cut up and I've already got a huge bruise going. My dog has an affinity for little dogs. He thinks they are prey and tries to kill them. I am going to buy him a muzzle today and he won't go out again without it.

I am so excited for trick or treating tonight. We live in a neighborhood with tons of kids, and it's lots of fun. We're going to set the fire pit and the lawn furniture in the driveway and watch everyone (along with football). Harrison is trick or treating with his friends this year :sad1: so I can kind of keep an eye out for them if I'm in the front.

Happy Halloween everyone! (no Halloween emoticons I see ... )

Tandy - Well that morning you had would wake me up and then some! Yikes! Are you ok after the other dog bit you? I was going to say that maybe your neighbor figured she was okay letting her dog run free because it was so early in the morning but it sounds like she does it all the time. How badly were the dogs hurt? And look at you, I would have been terrified to jump in the middle of all of that. I forget but what kind of dog do you have?

I skipped MCM because I was having ankle problems at the end of September beginning of October. I suppose I could have gone because my ankle feels fine now but I was worried because I hadn't done a LR over 13 miles. I had the 30K back in August so I probably would have been ok but at the time was more worried about making my ankle worse for Goofy.

Glad to hear that you've been cleared to run! I don't think any doctor would say it was okay for anyone - healthy or not to run 44 miles. That is some serious mileage! Have you picked out a pit crew?

Dave - Happy anniversary to you and Sally! Your getaway sounds perfect! Good luck on your training this morning!

Mike - I'm staying until Wednesday so I could go Monday or Tuesday. Let me check out the price first. I also wanted to go to the Yachtsman one of those nights. Want to do a swap? I'll go with you to Hoop de Doo and you come with me to Yachtsman :cutie:

Great time on the half! I know it's not a PR but it was a training run right? And I hear ya on the weight! It's hard this time of year because a treats are a plenty! Halloween, Thanksgiving and then Christmas! What I've been trying to do is to cut back on sweets, I'm leaving them for a cheat day (usually Saturday). And I've also stopped eating a few hours before bedtime - usually 8PM. My physio also suggested replacing fruits with veggies but I find that one tough.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Sorry to be MIA for so long; my mother was hospitalized for a lengthy time until recently so I've been occupied with her care. She is back at home and feeling better so I have a bit more time to visit these boards.

Managed to get my 5k in last weekend at the beach. Terrible pace: 13:57. My foot still hurts quite a bit from the spider bite wound. However, it is healing nicely so I'll have no excuse for January!

Here's a pic of the finisher's medal from the race. Yes, that is a bottle opener at the bottom of the medal:thumbsup2

Wow Tandy what a horrible experience with the dogs. What kind of dogs were involved? I live in a country subdivision where each house has an acre plus lot with forest and farmland all around. Lots of dogs but they are labs and hound dogs that are good citizens. You just let your dog out and he wanders the yard till he's ready to come in. Labs will wander by for a scratch on the ear and maybe a treat then head off on whatever mission they are on.

I went to the track for speed intervals this morning. I was a bit tired from the race on Saturday and it was cold and I wasn't feeling it but I didn't quit when I was tired I didn't quit till I was done. 4 X 800m with 3 miles to warm up and a mile cool down.

Dave:hippie:

Dave: Great job working through it! I felt the same way on my run this morning. My dog is a Welsh Terrier which looks like a mini aeredale. So, yes, he has little dog syndrome mixed with being a very serious prey driven terrier. The other dog is a little 10 pound white fluff ball. I love all dogs, but am drawn to terriers. But, I've never owned a dog like this one before. He will do anything and everything to get his target. He's killed 2 squirrels in our yard, managed 3 birds (still not sure how he did it), and now, attacked 3 different little dogs. Grrrrrr!

Elizabeth: I hope your mom is okay. I think having a horrible spider bite is a very good excuse for not doing your absolute best in a race. At least you got out there and did it. I love the bottle opener medal. That's my kind of medal. My ultra is a brewery to brewery race, so it would be nice if they had something like that.

Vicky: Well, I think that you made the right choice if your ankle is feeling good. Just kind of cements it. :thumbsup2
Frank, Harrison and I went to Hoop De Doo one of our last times. It's super corny, but lots of fun. The food was decent and if you've never done it, you should try it once. My favorite thing about it is that it's at the campground, which I absolutely love.

AFM: Got a 4 miler in today, which is 10 miles in 2 days. I had to deal with my knee now being sore because of the stupid dog, but it's all good. Got to get my hair trimmed and the oil changed today, so I'm outta here. Have a great one.

Elizabeth - That's an nice looking medal! Did you take that picture! It's really nice! I'm glad to hear that your spider bite is healing. I wouldn't have run too fast either if I had something happen to my foot. I still check the inside of my shoes after you told me about the bite  Congrats on your race! You'll get 'em next time :)

pixiedust: for your mom! I hope she's doing better!

Dave - Good job on the intervals!

Tandy - Thanks! I was looking forward to meeting Jackie but maybe next year! That's awesome that you've gotten in 10 miles! How are your calves feeling? You have had quite the busy morning!!

Happy Halloween Team!

Sorry to be missing all week, but we have been having too much fun to get on the computer. Scott says thanks for the birthday wishes - yes, he has gotten at least one present per day for the entire stay so far. On his birthday, we hit all four parks, starting at Animal Kingdom with an early opening. We went to the MNSSHP, that was fun but we got way too much candy!! We have been doing lots of walking, my knee is not happy with me!

Dave - Happy Anniversary! Enjoy your weekend in Gatlinburg!

Tandy - sorry about your incident with the dogs I understand, my dogs will also attack any dog that comes close to them, I dread running into unleashed dogs! I have been known to turn around when I see one, so that I do not have to pass it.

Rick - good job on the hills!

Vicky - Scott has gotten lots of goodies!

Mike - good luck on your next race!

Kim - sorry we kept missing you!

Have a great evening all! We will be back home soon.

Hi Team!

Mike- Hmm, I will ask Kyle if he is interested in going to the Hoop De Doo. What did you decide on the Arkansas half in March? Did you get any pictures of your Monster Dash? I’m glad you had fun!

Tandy- LOL, Harrison is very smart! I’m glad the boy/girl party went well! Good luck training for your ultra! I am sorry to hear you had such a rough morning. That is a pretty awful incident with the dogs. We keep our dog off leash when we let her outside, but she is also obedient off leash. And I am always aware of our surroundings and who is coming/going. You’re lucky you get lots of trick or treaters! I don’t think I will have any while we live here. I always enjoyed handing out candy and seeing all the costumes.

Scott- Happy belated birthday! I am glad you had a great day!

Dave- Glad your race Saturday went well and you didn’t finish last! I prefer the boards to FB and post more here than I do there. If I do post on FB, it’s not usually related to my running. I hope you have a great getaway in Gatlinburg this weekend! Congrats on your 1 year anniversary!

Vicky- The wine tour was a lot of fun! We went to 4 family owned wineries in the area (there are 24 total), so we still have 20 more to get to while we are here. The owners were all very warm and welcoming, and each had a different feel to it. I liked them all for different reasons. We came home with 6 bottles, but there were several more in addition to that, that I also liked. I run in technical socks. Hmm, thanks for the tips! I agree- running slowly is better than not running at all! And congrats on the weight loss! That is awesome!

Elizabeth- I’m glad your mother is home now. I hope she’s doing better. I love that medal!! Do you check your shoes for spiders now before you put them on?

Lynn- Glad you guys are having an awesome time!!

Random Question- Are we going to do a team Turkey Trot again this year?

AFM, we had a great time at our wine tour on Saturday. I think it has been my worst cheat day yet with all that wine and snacking. It was totally worth it though, especially since I don’t do it very often. I weighed in at 134.4 on Friday. I was very happy to see that! I sure hope the scale isn’t higher this weekend after all my eating/drinking on Saturday though! Aside from that I am doing well with my eating, and water intake.

Happy Halloween everyone!
