Hakuna Matada - Spooky October

Up early to drink some coffee and wake up before I have to get the family ready for church. After church, we will head out to the Towpath to run (Jordan will pace on his bike). I'm going to do a true LSD for the first half. I'll go slower than I feel I should and then turn it up a notch if I feel good for the last 6-8 miles. I was always a true believer of training at speed so I know what I can actually do on race day, but I'm quickly learning that the Goofy is a different animal (so to speak). Yesterdays 8 miles left me with a twinge in the knee again and tight calves. Which I guess is something that can also happen on race day. Take it as is comes I guess! Good luck to Mike today and pixiedust: to Liz for her injury.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!!!

Friends took me out to dinner last night for my birthday. I read a quote somewhere that relatives are family by birth or marriage but friends are family by choice. That is so true in every sense of the word.

Not sure what I'll do today, I have to work but might get in an easy walk with Sally anyway. I feel strong but my legs feel tired from last weeks hard training.

Eva that training sounds great, you are going to be ready for that Goofy.

What pace is everyone planning for the half and or the full in January?

Dave:hippie:

Happy Monday, all,

My spider bite is healing. :thumbsup2 I had some lovely oozing blisters on Saturday but they are now dried out and the swelling has gone down enough to put on my shoe. Since I missed my long run do I increase my mileage on my short runs this week? I hope to be back to running by tomorrow if the swelling continues to decrease.

Elizabeth: Glad it's getting better. Sounds yuck though. How'd the eating go at the game?

Dave: We were living that quote this weekend too. Our "family" is really just the amazing friends we've collected.

Mike: Well? How'd it go? Can't wait for a report.

Lynn: How was the zoo? I love the Denver zoo, especially penguins and polar bears. I don't get there enough though. We go to visit my mom at least once a year, but she always wants to be picked up and head straight to the mountains. Hmmm, wonder why?

AFM: I had a great weekend. We went sailing on Saturday after I ran a whole mile without stopping. Then, on Sunday, I ran 1.5 without stopping, and got to watch football all day. My Packers came back in the 2nd half last night, and we've got a great game lined up tonight. Go Lions!!!!! I hate to say that, since they are our biggest threat this year, but it's so much fun to see them winning. I'm going to try to run another 1.5 today, and see how everything's feeling. I'm continuing to walk at least 2 miles a day also. I am giving myself one more week before I go back to zumba, so next week will be very exciting.

Frank and I have massages scheduled for today. Boy, am I in need! I plan on going and then, coming home and napping. I haven't been sleeping well lately, and I was up at 4 again.

Hope everyone has a fantastic day!

I had an awesome speed session this morning. I walked a brisk mile to warm up then 4 X 600m walk sprints with 600m recovery walks between each followed by a mile brisk cool down walk. Best 600m was 3 min 50 sec, that is 10:13 min per mile pace. That's where I'd like for my race walking race pace to be soon.

I think the 10K this weekend will be a good one for me. I'm doing a 5K with Sally at her pace then the 10K as a race right after so I'll get a 9 mile day. That's this Saturday. My best 10K walk race time has been 1 hour and 14 min so maybe this will one will be a new PR for me.

The Mustang went in for brakes today and I've had a good nap. We older Pandas like naps after workouts.

Happy Thanksgiving to Saylan, Kim and Sue and Happy Columbus day to the rest of the team! Hope everyone is enjoying their day off!

Tandy - Thanks for the birthday wishes! I thought about posting it here but I felt a little silly posting a happy birthday to myself  WTG on your run and I'm glad to hear that you're continuing to run as well! The ankle is really annoying - I can deal with the knee pain but for some reason I feel like I have to be extra careful with the ankle for some reason. It's tough to know when to go to the physio - sometimes the pain goes away by itself and then you're fine. Other times...

The massages sound like heaven! Hope you and Frank have a great time!

Dave - Afternoon naps are for everyone! I love taking a quick nap in the afternoon too! Good job on the speedwork! At the rate you're going, you'll be able to be a pacer for runners! Can't wait to see what kind of time you're going to get at your next race. I'm not sure of pacing for January because my goal is just to finish. I guess ideally I'd like under 2:45 for the half and under 5:00 for the full.

Elizabeth - The spider bite story gave me the shivers! I think I will be having a look in my shoes from now on. Yikes! Was it a big spider? And was it promptly squashed after it bit you? You could increase your mileage on your midweek runs if you want - what I do sometimes is to average out the total miles you run in a week and then divide by the number of days you'd normally run. Or you could just do your LR next weekend, I don't think skipping or pushing back a week will hurt. Yup, MCM is out for this year :( I still have a ticket and time booked off so I could go for fun ... but if I'm going to go next year, I might want to save the ticket.

Eva - My physio suggested that I use the foam roller and/or stick before running to make sure my muscles are as loose as possible. I've also been going at a slower pace to try and avoid re-injuring myself. I also started icing after each run as well. Do you know what's causing your knee pain? Tight muscles or is it just general after running soreness?

Mike - Thanks for the birthday wishes! That is waay too much money for Internet access! I think hotels should give people 5-10 minutes of free access just so they can quickly check and reply to an email or two. It really doesn't cost them much - they only charge because business travelers will pay and can expense it. Which races did you sign up for? I hope Liz is feeling better! You should treat her to a massage ;)

Lynn - Yes birthday celebrations should be at least a week long! It's too hard to fit in all the celebrations otherwise! Hope you and Scott are having a blast in DC! I haven't been to the Denver zoo but I love going to the zoo in DC (except for that hill in the middle  )

AFM - I went running Saturday and Sunday, I did 5 miles each day. My ankle is still so-so. I feel like it's always something  I think I'm going to start walking the miles even if I can't run them. I changed my intervals from 10/1 to 3/2 and that seemed to work better but walking for 2 minutes seems like an eternity  I did an ice bath on my ankle/foot when I got home and an ice pack on my knee.

Got my butt into the gym this morning for a training session. I would have preferred sleeping in but the fat isn't going to melt away by itself (unfortunately). Did a lot of leg exercises - leg press, straight legged deadlifting, bridges, hamstring curls... I'm glad I went :goodvibes

My trainer also mentioned that I might want to rotate my gym shoes like I do for running. It's the same idea - the cushioning runs out over time so it helps. I didn't know that.

Anyway, have a great day everyone :wave2:

Vicky, stop it! You don't have any pudge darlin. You have the lean body that most of us are striving for. We are going to capture you at Disney and force feed you Mickey bars. Just kidding about the Mickey bars but seriously you are very lean and strong.:worship:

You are correct about the shoes losing cushion before they look worn. If you have trained in a pair of shoes for 20 miles a week for 4 months they are ready to replace. If you train in racing flats like I do then 3 months is it. I just had a pair that I had trained in for 4 months and I had worn a hole in the sole of the left shoe.:scared1:

If the half, full or Goofy were next month who would be ready to do it?

Dave:hippie:

Aww shucks! Thanks Dave  But just to let you know, you wouldn't have to force me to eat Mickey Bars! LOL I'll eat 'em by the boxful!

Good morning team!!!!!

Belated Happy Thanksgiving and Columbus day to all. Nice having a long weekend the weather was absolutely amazing here. Didn't spend alot of time inside.

Hope everyone is doing well, quick check in. Heading in to work early why is it when you go on holidays you have to either pre-do (is that a word) or catch up a ton of work around your vaca. Either way worth it to get away for a nice long but of course never long enough vacation.

Have a super day all.

Kim

Good morning team., Is it just me or is it getting hard to post on our WISH site? I come on here sometimes and try a couple of times then have to go without ever getting to post anything.

Long work week for me this week and working by myself since we have someone on vacation.

Vacation, what a nice word.:cloud9:

Dave:hippie:

Hi team. Just got out of school and am happy to report that I got a 92.5 on my bones test!!!!! I am so excited! Plus, we started muscles today. Due to my many injuries from running, I know so many of the lower body muscles that it's not even funny. Someone was trying to say gastrocnemius and was shocked when I just spit it out. Well, hello, I just tore the stupid thing 6 weeks ago! They found out today that I'm an ex personal trainer, so they were all coming up and asking where things were. Like a personal trainer knows the names of the muscles on your face. I tried to help, but am a little lost on those.

I took a day off of walking or running today. The calf is sore, the ankle is sore, and the bottom of my foot is sore. None of it's bad, but I'm sure I can use a break. Eating has been atrocious! I haven't given up one temptation. I hit them all: alcohol, sugar, white flour, just no meat.

Kim: I hope you have a fantastic time. By the way, we still have a little over a month until Thanksgiving. ;) But, thanks for the happy wishes.

Dave: Big fan of naps too. I never get them, but I love them. Sorry you have such a hectic week.

Vicky: Got to agree with Dave on this one. You really have no body fat, at least you didn't in January, so you shouldn't worry. You look great!
The massages were awesome. The funny part was that the masseuse looked familiar at first, so we asked each other. She's my zumba instructor's sister, and used to go to zumba all the time. I told her her sister tried to kill me (calf tear), which she found highly amusing.

Just wanted to say never mind to Kim. I didn't even realize that it was Canadian Thanksgiving. Duh!!!!!

Hi everyone! Just an FYI for anyone who has a room-only reservation for marathon weekend, give Disney a call and see if you can apply code YSG or UU7 to your reservation. Thanks to Kim for the heads up this morning! I got a nice discount off the first half of my reservation.

And speaking of reservations... make sure you go online and check your's. The email they send you doesn't outline everything. The agent who made my initial reservation added travel insurance to the second half of my reservation. I only checked today and noticed the extra $70 charge. They removed it but it was after the 14 day grace period.

Tandy - I thought of you the other day when I was at Starbucks. The trivia question for the day was "How many bones are there in the human body?" I was thinking that was funny because you had just mentioned your bones test in your post! I think studying is stressful - maybe that's where the bad eating comes from? Make sure you're bringing healthy snacks with you to class! And thanks for the compliment! I skipped dessert last night after I read it

Kim - Are you packed up and ready to go? Sue is on a cruise right now but I can't remember where her ship is headed to.

Dave - Hope work doesn't get too crazy for you while the other person is on vacation. I know how you feel. I am looking forward to Disney!

AFM - I went for a 3 mile walk last night. I finished it in 46 minutes which is not quite as speedy as Dave but it felt good. Too bad it gets dark out so early. I had to take my glasses with me. I did some more foam rolling and rolling with The Stick when I got back. The knee and ankle feel better today but I'll see if that changes when I go for a run tonight.

Hope everyone is doing well! :wave2:

Hi Kids!

I survived! I'm goining to post race reports today if the internet and site lets me. I agree with Dave, I'm having trouble with the postings!

-Mike :cool2:

last post took about five minutes to clear, I'll try again later. I don't want to lose a long race report in cyberspace...

September 4th 2011

The day started off cool with the race starting at 600 am. The start time was nice for us because "our" time was an hour later, and we were staying at the Disneyland Hotel which was a short walk from the start line. So, we actually slept in a little.
We used the port o pots one last time and headed over to our corrals. I was in B, Liz in C. They had a large screen set up at the start where we could see the announcers, similar to the WDW races. They announced that Drew Carrey was running with us and briefly showed him. The temp was around 60 and I was kind of chilly in my short sleeve WISH shirt. I fellow WISHER Jeff from Hawaii before the race, but no one else.
After the National Anthem the race started on time and we were off. The first mile and a half had us running down Disneyland Drive and turning left onto Katella Ave. Then another left onto Harbor Blvd and briefly into the CA park. At mile two we were crossing the area between the two parks and headed into Disneyland. I remember a guy jumping up and tapping the archway into the park as we went under it.
I felt good about this race from before it started. It had the usual great level of Disney organization and a positive feel for me. I did well in the Chicago Rock and roll half and wanted to do better here. My goal was to break 2:07 and set new PR. Plus, Lizzie was running the race with me, which always makes me feel good.
As I settled into a nice pace of around 9:30, I felt a pit stop coming on. I came across an open restroom near Fantasy land and saw a guy ahead of me duck into it. I figured, now is the time if I'm going and there goes my PR. I usually don't have to stop during a race. Having to undo my bib, fuel belt and have my drawstring get stuck on my shorts was a little frustrating. So, I figured I lost about four minutes and was way behind. This was at about the 5k mark and I knew I had a long way to go, so no giving up now.
By mile 3.5 we were out on the streets again and turned onto Ball Rd and heading onto the overpass over interstate 5, just as the sun was coming up. I was glad I had my shades on right then. :cool2: My pace dropped down to about 9:10 and I was starting to make time up. I had worn a timing bracelet for the first time so I knew where my time was at compared to my miles.
It started getting warm and I was glad to have my fuel belt full of water. Miles 5 - 9 didn't have alot of Disney feel to them as we ran the streets and through some industrial area. We passed school bands, cheerleaders, a Hawaiian dance group, and a group of Mexican dancers who were more interested in taking their own pictures. :confused3 We soon reached the Angel's baseball stadium and got to run on the warning track around the field with a ton of people cheering us on. I was getting tired by this point, but it gave me the motivation to keep it moving.
By mile 12 we were heading though the backside of DCA and I was getting frustated looking for the finish line. I ran the last mile in about 8 minutes and kept looking for the last turn to the finish. I finally crossed in a full on run and knew I had made a PR, but forgot to stop my watch. :woohoo::woohoo:
After crossing into the family meeting area, I headed off to get my medal engraved. They have up to to minute results and I finished in 2:04:44!! I was very happy that even with a pitstop, I did it! I also collected my first Coast to Coast medal!
I came across Scott and Lynn and hung out with them for a while. Jeff showed up, and Craig (Greg?) was there with a broken foot he suffered during the race. It was good to see more WISHERS, which added to the good vibes! I later went in search of Liz and found her, hobbling along with and ice pack taped to her knee. It had flared up, but she finished in about 2:30. We went back to talk with Scott and Lynn for awhile and headed over to the hotel to clean up. We took it easy the rest of the day and spent some time at Traders Sam's bar in the hotel. (Great place!)
I'm sure most of you have seen the medal from the half, but until I had mine, I didn't realize it was so huge! Oh, and Drew Carrey beat me! Overall the race was a good time, but with alot less Disney to it compared to WDW races. So far, for next year, I have tenative plans to share a room with Rick and go for another PR!
Later in the week, we hit Newport beach and froze our butts off, and went to Universal on a day when it hit 105 inland. Both trips have their own stories to them, but I'll spare you the details!

Next up: The Fort2Base 10NM race

-Mike :cool2:

Hello team!

Just a quick post to say "hi." I've been keeping busy lately, I hope I'll have time to catch up on all the posts soon.

Hope everyone is well.

Have a good night!
Emily

OK guys...this will be brief. I have been locked in my kitchen for 3 days trying to potty train. We were trying the 3 day "bootcamp" in which you let them run around naked and rush them to sit on the potty when they start to go (much like a puppy). Needless to say I've been bored out of my mind so I started to bake...oh and the snacking hasn't stopped. I feel like I've gained 10 lbs in the three days I was in there. Yesterday we decided to try a new method that may work better for us since we are both working parents. Diapers to sleep and nap, undies in the house and pull ups for going out. It seems to be better although he didn't tell us he had to go while we were out last night until after he went in the pull up. Hence why we need them I guess. :confused3

Anywho..I'm going to get some hill work in before Jordan goes to work...off I go...

Oh and Vickie...I've had a bad knee since I was a kid. It feels like runners knee...it always flares up when I start to get into the 15 mile plus long runs. Don't really know if I can prevent it. I always stretch good at night and I do some deep tissue massage to help, but it may be inevitable. I was thinking that I may have to slow down my predicted Goofy pace. I don't know if you will have to as well with your injury, but it may just work that way for both of us and we can still run together. I'm still doing 2/2 on Sat and 4/1 on Sundays, but slowed it down this last weekend and felt much better...

Good morning all!!!

Great race report Mike, you met up with some great WISHer's

Vicky: Nope haven't packed a thing. That is totally not like me I usually pack a few weeks in advance and then unpack and start again. Not too worried cause I do have the weekend before we fly to MCO since we don't fly till the MOnday. My DSIL is on a cruise right now would be so funny if they are on the same one.

Tandy: No worries I am not quite sure why we celebrate different days but I kinda prefer ours, gets me some time before the xmas turkey feast :)

HI To everyone!!!!

AFM trainning has been non-existant this week just really busy with nothing really but going out tonight. Part way through the day yesterday I started with some really bad pain in my shoulder on the outside only when I lift my arm. Not sure what I could have possibly done I have a desk job but have been super stressed lately so maybe something finally snapped. Hope it gets better soon, don't want to go to the DR and risk getting sick before my vaca:rolleyes1

Good morning team.

Good luck with that Eva.

The next two days are rest days for me, I have the back to back 5K and 10K on Saturday so the next two days will be lots of stretching and using the stick and ice.

The last two days at work have been 11 hr shifts and yesterday I did a hard 6.3 miler before going in. So I was sore this morning when I woke up.

Have a magical day y'all.
