We are pretty much game for anything but of course my fav place on disney property to eat I think is Kona for breaky but also love Boma, Biergarten, but agree not before a race :)

Still aren't sure on arrival and departure dates kinda just watching flight prices that might help us decide and of course if free dining comes out we will be there longer if not then it will be a shorter visit.

Vicky: Glad your run was mostly pain free. You look awesome. On my work computer when it goes into sleep mode all the photos that are on my computer cycle through and one of them is from the womens run a few years ago photo has Erica, CJ you and me and you have come along way, your hard work has definiatley paid off.

Dave: Our weather has been crazy also but in the south the weather has been down right nasty. Stay safe.

As for me the scale moved 2.6 pds this week, feels great still got along way to go but I feel finally something is working for me. I have a 1/2 at the end of the month and my longest walk to date is only 6M but I am not too worried because I am getting in all the mid week walks in I am going to try and get in a 8 and 10M between now and then.

Have a super day to all I missed.

Kim

Hi guys!

Sorry I haven't been around - life's been crazy. The good news is my second observation was yesterday, and it went VERY well! So yay!!!

Any kind of meal meet is absolutely 100% out for me over Marathon weekend. It's the weekend of my dad's 70th birthday, so we're celebrating that and my first full marathon. I'm sorry, but I'm not giving up family time. I'm not really into the rah-rah let's all meet as a team thing personally. I know it's weird to all of you, but for me it's one thing to talk online and support each other that way. It's a total other thing to meet up and be all rah-rah and huggy and OMG PICTURES and WE MUST WEAR THE SAME SHIRT OR TATTOOS with people I've never met in my life. It's tough enough for me to be team-like and wear my running club stuff at NYRR races. If you want to kick me off this list because of that, it's fine. But that's just how I am. Sorry.

I guess I'll leave it at that for now.

Wow....well that is awesome that your dad will be there for his 70th birthday but I think that is about all I can say at this point that post seems a bit uncalled for nobody was forcing anyone to do anything. Sorry you feel that way and hope you have a great trip in January.

I probably could have phrased it better, but when there is a poll about a "team meal" on the main thread and when I've been told "oh, we just meet for a group picture" and other things, it IS pressure to conform.

Whatever. I've gotten some good advice, but I've decided this board in general, not just this group isn't for me. I like Disney, and I like running, but I'm far too introverted for this.

Sorry.

Hi Team! Sorry I've been MIA last couple days.

I voted for Saturday Morning and Sunday Night. The Saturday one might be a tight squeeze for after the 1/2 but I don't know what time off I can get yet otherwise I'd totally be up for any of the options.

Tattoos: I will continue to look into reasonably priced options for team tattoos. Thanks everyone who indicated they'd want one. My efforts are not in vain now. :rotfl:

Regina: We had a great anniversary! Costly though. It was full of surprises, for him mostly.

Cosmic bowling is awesome. I haven't done that in forever. Sounds like you and DH had a blast.

Vicky: Cosmic bowling is where it's in the dark but the lanes, pins, and balls glow (normally). It's really really cool with black lights and stuff.

Unless our team grows a lot, I might pass on the 1,000 order options.

I had Boma before my Princess race and I've done McD's before long runs. Boma treated me much better performance-wise. :thumbsup2 I definitely support not in a park if only because depending on the day, we ight not get a full use of the pass.

You can totally achieve your weight-loss goal. We believe in you!

Kim: Grats on the scale progress. That's always a great feeling.

AFM: The anniversary went well, but the diet got shot. Lots of pasta, breads, sweets and too few veggies.

The running plan for the DL half starts today so hopefully that'll push me back on track again. Since I stopped doing running training my weight hasn't been as kind.

Also, as some of you noticed, I did a drastic change to my hair. I'm super stoked and currently trying to pick the place to donate my chopped locks to. A lot of people say Locks of Love but that is American and I would like to donate to a Canadian organization. The few Canadian ones I've found make me nervous though. One of the tails came out a bit so most organizations won't accept them. Others want 12 instead of 10 inches. Still on the hunt but I'll hopefully find something.

[Edit because I took too long to write my message]:

Beth: While I might not necessrily agree that there is pressure to meet or wear something specific, I appreciate your view of it and respect that not everyone needs or wants the same things from a team, even an online one. I'm also very introverted (in person, less so online) so I can understand your apprehension. You need to do what works for you so if that means you go, then I support you and wish you the best of luck with everything you do. If that means you stay, I just want you to know that from me (and I'm sure a lot of the team here) we would never want you to feel pressured or required to do anything. You're not the only one who wouldn't be wearing green (I won't be).

I gathered from your other post that you're pretty much decided to go, but I think the beauty of the internet forums is that you can post as little as you want (down to just lurking even) so I hope you know, again from me but probably others too, you'd be welcome to stop by once in a while. You've got so many big races on the horizon and I'll be cheering for you.

Hi everyone!

Ok, let me start off by saying that the meets we're talking about are not mandatory. If anyone wants to spend the day with their family or at a park, don't feel you have to change your plans to accommodate the group. You're free to attend one, two or none of the meets. No one's feelings will be hurt, I promise there's no pressure to attend. That said, I felt that our meets would be a chance to hang out in a smaller group outside of the big meet at Pop Century. I know the big meet can be a little intimidating. It's more of an opportunity to put faces to names and to meet the people you've been chatting with during the year. Of the WISH meets that I've been to, they've never been a "rah rah rah" "Go WISH!" rally environment, rather people just chat about running, their families or whatever else they want to. It's really informal and you can come and go as you like. And no you don't have to wear a WISH shirt, tattoos, etc. - wear whatever you want. I don't think I've ever worn my WISH shirt to a race or a meet. And pictures are optional ... I don't think I've ever made it into the big group photo because I'm always late! Okie dokie?

Beth - I'm sorry you felt there was pressure on you to attend a meet or wear a shirt. That was not my intention at all. I think what you felt was just a lot of us being excited about marathon weekend and being able to meet face to face. I'm also sorry to hear that you're leaving the boards. If you change your mind and want to come back, let me know. Otherwise, I just wanted to wish you the best with your running.

Will do a catch up post with everyone tonight! :wave2:

Hi, all,

Just found the May thread.

Had a great time in Niagara and realized that I can no longer complain about cold weather. Whatever cold weather I have, you guys in Canada and NY have it colder. And who can forget Lynn's ridiculous windy weather? ;)

Didn't have a chance to run outside but I did so in the fitness center at the hotel for 2 out of the 3 days that we were there. Did a lot of walking too. Need to get more serious.

Beth: Hope you decide to stay. I learn a lot from everyone in this group, including you.

Enjoy the rest of the day, everyone!

Well I for one enjoy the meets and the chat on and off line. I've known some of you for 5 or 6 years and look at you not just as friends but family. I've had you guys to lean on when I didn't have much else to depend on. Vicky and Kimmer you are like sisters and I can't imagine going to Disney without seeing the two of you. I'm grown fond of a some others also. Like Mike, we do need to meet up and do a race and then a ratkillin over some good beer.

We are more like warriors than you might at first think. When we do meet we are preparing for battle with the tough distances and goals. That bit of letting our hair down is relaxing.

I do lots of dinners and meets while at Disney since I'm a WISH member and I moderate DisneyRunning.

Anyway have an awesome night team mates.

Dave:hippie:

Hi everyone! It's Wednesday - halfway to the weekend!

Dave - Awww!! I've made a lot of friends on WISH too and like you I think of them as family!

Elizabeth - Way to get in the walking and exercise while on vacation! Good for you :) Yeah, the weather here has been chilly! I feel like it doesn't warm up until closer to the end of May.

Saylan - I saw your new 'do on FB and think it looks awesome!! Good luck with the hair donation! I didn't realize the organizations were so strict - the length and whether the hair was coming out. A friend of mine who ran the Goofy last year said he ate at Boma before the full and said he was fine. And I can relate to the weight and running. Which training plan are you following for the half?

Kim - WTG on the loss! What kind of exercises are you doing at the gym? Hey! I remember that race! That was such a blast! Loved seeing our guys in the park cheering us on!

AFM - I'm trying out a few different things for breakfast this week. This morning, I made a smoothie - no added or refined sugars but I think it does have sugar because of the soy milk. Other things I threw in were protein powder, chia seeds, cocoa powder, oats, coconut and a bit of vanilla. The only annoying thing is washing the blender out.

The sun is out so I'm going to try and get in a run after work. Fingers crossed that it doesn't rain.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

I almost forgot! I think Regina was asking me about the breakfast bars that I made. I followed this recipe and they turned out quite well.

http://www.healthfulpursuit.com/2011/03/cranberry-pear-porridge-bites/

Ingredients
  • 1 cup millet
  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 6 tbsp egg whites
  • 2 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup pureed bosc pear
  • 1/4 cup ground chia
  • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1 cup dried apple, chopped
  • 1/4 cup bosc pear, diced small
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Himalayan rock salt

Directions
Place millet, apple juice, and water in a medium sized saucepan. Cover and bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer and allow to cook for 20-25 minutes. Be sure not to lift the lid while cooking. Only check up on millet at the 20-25 minute mark. It should be cooked through but still a bit chewy. All the liquid should be evaporated. It should not be the consistency of oatmeal. If it is, it’s been cooked too long. Remove from heat and allow to cool in a large bowl.

Preheat oven to 350F and line a 9×13 pan with parchment paper for easy lifting.

Meanwhile, combine all remaining ingredients, adding 2.5 cups of the cooked millet to the bowl. Stir until combined.

Press mixture firmly into prepared pan, and place in the oven for 45-55 minutes [mine took 50 minutes], or until the corners begin to brown.
Remove from oven and let cool for 20 minutes. Slide out of the pan and continue to cool for another 40 minutes [it's so important that you let it cool!] before cutting with a sharp knife.

Makes 24 squares

This mornings training walk was amazing. The weather was crisp but the sun was out and we haven't seen the sun for a while. We did 6.9 miles along the river and the park at just under 12 min per mile pace. One of our brothers was feeling his inner rabbit, he is getting faster all the time, he is going to be a force in the world of senior race walking. I'm going to beat him soundly at the July race when I return to competition though.

Hello Team!

First, let me say that I look forward to our team meet-ups at our common races! They mean alot to me and one of my favorite pictures on my computer is of our team, from last years marathon weekend at WDW. I printed it for our scrapbook. If for some reason, I miss a future meet, I will be disappointed. Its also fun to meet everyones significant others and to put faces to the names and stories posted here.
Next, I like wearing my WISH shirt to the races and will wear them again this weekend at the Everest Challenge. Probably to packet pickup and during the race. The shirts led me to meet Eva, her husband Jordan, and Mary and her husband (Ken?) while waiting to start the Wine and Dine half. I would have never found them without the shirts. I had Regina's cell number and was lucky enough to meet up with her and Kyle also. And by the way Vicky, thank you for posting the poll!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to my travels and getting down to my favorite escape from the real world. I placed 20th in the men's catagory last year and am going to try for higher this year. I'm a little faster at running, and if I don't get hung up on a clue, like last year, I should be able to do it.

I promised race reports from last weekend and I know Eva is desperate to hear them. So, here it goes, feel free to skip them if you want, it might get lengthy...

Race Report #1

Friday morning I came home from work slept about two hours and we picked up Robert from preschool at noon and brought him home for my Mom to watch him. Then we made the three hour drive to Champange-Urbana Illinois, home of the University of Illinois where the race was held. Parking and packet pickup were a piece of cake and they had a small expo, mostly promoting upcoming races. They still had openings for the 5K, so Liz signed up also. I had signed up for the I-Challenge which was the 5K on Friday night and the Half on Saturday. Then we found our hotel about ten minutes away and checked in , and changed for the race.
The 5K was alot of fun and a pretty festive start to the weekend. I think there were 2500 racers, some in costume. I saw Darth Vader, all in the school's colors of Orange and Blue carrying an orange light saber. Also, a few guys in nothing but blue speedos. I started in the middle of the pack, Liz went to the rear. The race turned out to be mostly down hill the whole way with a little rise at about mile two, with more downhill leading into the football stadium for the finish on the 50 yard line. I must have had the right about of caffine because I rocked this race and passed a whole bunch of people after pacing myself at the start. There was a huge crowd cheering along the streets and a bunch of the frat houses set up speakers on their front porches and had music blaring. (and I mean blaring!) I finished in 26:55, missing a PR by 35 seconds. Liz set a new PR of 30:24! It is my fastest 5K of the year so far. We collected a nice medal at the end, headed to the hotel, showered, and went out for a bite to eat.

Saturday- Half marathon

Saturday started windy, overcast, and cold. I think the temp was 42. I dropped Liz off at her voulteer spot and headed for the parking near the start. Along the way I passed alot of signs along the racecourse, including one that read "runners don't read this, keep running!" The start of the half was near where the 5K had started and parking was close, so I stayed in the car as long as I could to stay warm.
At the start they had a woman (forget her name) that had won Boston eight times, encouraging us on. They started us in waves and I had lined up with the 2:15 pace group. The pace guy, Jay, was amazing as we ran. He kept perfect pace, annouced turns, waterstops, and cheered us all on. I lost him at the wave start, but caught up to him in the first half mile. Along the way a woman kind of hooked up with me and we started talking, and sharing race stories. Her name was Janna and we really hit it off. The miles ticked off up to mile ten where I had to make a pit stop and lost the pace group. The course was really great, winding through the neighborhoods surrounding the college and through a park. Again, the crowds were great and music was everywhere. In the park, there were several art scupltures and one was a nude woman that someone had tied some running shoes and bib number onto. She looked alot like and ex-girlfriend of mine...
I almost caught the pace group again by mile 12 but was running out of steam. The crowd had really quitied down at the end and I heard another runner ask why they weren't cheering. (Probably because they had been out there at least two hours) Something went haywire inside me and I lost it and started screaming for everyone to cheer. I was yelling that we were the tired ones and they needed to make some noise. I pretty much lost it, and had a very weird moment of "wow, am I really yelling that? Is that my voice?" Being of Viking descent, I wondered if I had gone through a berserker spell. I expended so much energy yelling at everyone, I almost had to stop, really- just stop. I felt like I was going to barf and started shaking. I did happen to make the last quarter mile, but it wasn't pretty. :scared:

I finished in 2:14:41, collected my medals (one for the half, one for the I-Challenge) and met Liz outside the stadium. I was wiped out and took a long time to calm down. Funny thing, the race was so well put together that we are going back next year!

Sunday- Half marathon number two!
I started Sunday at home, not wanting to get out of bed. My legs were not happy, and the bed was warm and comfy. I got up, took a hot shower and headed out in the cold again. The Great Western half marathon was about a half hour from our house and held on a bikepath through some woods. There were only about 750 runners, as opposed to the 7500 the day before. I started at the back and pretty much stayed there. There were several hills at the start, but it was an out and back so it finished downhill. I struggled quite a bit and walked alot. Once my legs warmed up they worked pretty well. I finished in 2:24:41, but I finished. I collected my medal and hung out for awhile to recover a bit. It had gotten much warmer outside and several people were getting medical assistance, including at least two on strechers. I had survived my great experiment, and gained some mental training for the Goofy.
So, all in all, I collected four medals, three shirts, and covered 29.3 miles during the weekend. In two weekends, I am doing a 25K and a half back to back. We'll see if I had beginners luck!
Train on everyone! I'm leaving straight from work in the morning for WDW and 90 degree weather! Somebody warn the Yeti, I'm coming for him!
- Mike :cool2:

Wow Mike, you're going to be ready and then some for the Goofy. One word of caution, don't over train, I did that last year and had a nice 3 month rest break while I recovered from PF.

I'm doing the USAF half in Dayton the 17th of Sept and that may be the only half I do before the Goofy, not sure yet, I might do another if a convient one comes along. Maybe a Nashville race.

If funds permit I would like to go to Gattlinburg tenn in Dec for some training before the Goofy. The hills and trails are great training.

Dave:hippie:

My training walk this morning was Frog Flippin awesome!! It was 36 degrees and sunny so I drove to the mall and warmed up with 2 miles in the mall then headed out for a strong 3 miler outside on the roads. I didn't have a regular rout to time but it felt sub 12 mpmish.

I saw a website for a clothing line on facebook. The title is going to be my mantra for this years comeback training: "Harden the #uck Up"! Exactly what I need. Grrrrrrrr!

Have an awesome day Y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning everyone!

Mike - That's an awesome RR! Congrats on all your races this past weekend! You are going to rock Goofy in January! That's so weird that the crowds were just standing around and not cheering. Glad to hear you finished the race ok! I'll bet it was a combination of the adrenaline and exhaustion that caused the shaking. Safe travels to WDW! I can't wait to hear about it when you get back :)

Dave - Good job on the walk and great pace too! Glad to hear that you're finally getting some sunshine! I remember Scott mentioning something about the senior games as well. Are you guys going to be competitors?

AFM - I decided to practice one of the recipes that we're making in class on Friday. I probably should have read the recipe first. It wasn't difficult but whoever wrote it, left off two ingredients from the directions. I only realized after the dough wouldn't stick together properly  Doesn't inspire much confidence since the recipe comes from a cooking school! I did manage to save it but it took a little bit of extra work.

Got a training session scheduled for tonight and then I'm off to see Fast Five.

Hope everyone is having a great day! :wave2:

Vicky, although I qualified for the National Senior Olympics again, with a 3rd place in state, I won't be able to go. I just don't have the funds for staying in Huston and the $165 entry fee. But I will be going to the next games that will be held in Cleveland for 2013. I will turn 60 in Oct so I plan to be rewrite the book on over 60 race walking. My third place at state was just after getting over that PF last year and really didn't have time to train.

Dave:hippie:

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

Looking to skip Wine and Dine and come join y'all in January. :)

Missed my run this morning and yesterday; too much stuff to do for the kids while they are tracked out. The girls go to year-round school so they are out of school for 3 weeks and in school for 9 weeks throughout the year. It isn't always easy to find inexpensive childcare and even though DH is back at work, he hasn't gotten that first pay check. My sweet mother is watching them today but I have to get a lot prepared before she comes over (as her mobility isn't the greatest) so I simply ran out of time before work to get in that run.

Trying to also give up sugar for more than just one day. It's impossible, especially after we stopped (and shopped) in Hershey PA on our way back from NY. ;)

Hoping to get a long run in tomorrow.

My evil eating is frozen pizzas and hot pockets. That and beer. I don't do much snacking.

Dave:hippie:

Hi Team!

Dave- I’m glad you had a good weekend with Sally. Congrats on the great training walk yesterday and today!!! Isn’t pizza a weakness for most of us? It’s really easy for me to overeat on pizza (frozen or not).

Emily- I hadn’t been bowling in years myself, but being in such a remote area, I don’t have as easy access to things I used to do before I moved. Anyway, we had fun and hope to do it again sometime. I hope you enjoyed your rest day.

Vicky- I would be up for a Saturday lunch or dinner as well. I don’t know that we will necessarily have park passes that day for any park meals though. I’m glad your eating is back on track! Oh, and in addition to the black lights and glowing lanes, pins, and balls, they also play music when cosmic bowling. Thanks for the breakfast bar recipe! Sounds like you’re still enjoying the cooking classes- and if I can say so, you sound good at it if you’re able to save a recipe that’s missing ingredients! DH and I went and saw Fast Five today too! How did you like it?

Kim- Congrats on the weight loss! Good luck on your half at the end of the month!

Saylan- I hope your training start for the DL half is going well. What kind of haircut did you get? Unfortunately, I have no idea where you can donate your hair either.

Elizabeth- Glad you had a great trip! Great job continuing to exercise even while on vacation! Good luck giving up the sugar. I’m sure it will get easier for you.

Mike- Good luck at Everest this weekend! Looking forward to the RR. Great race reports and congrats again on finishing all 3 races!!! You seriously rock!!!

AFM, DH and I ran this morning. It was a beautiful day and we finished before the wind really started in. My poor doodle girl, Sydney, got sick while we were running though! She recovered well, but we figure maybe it was too warm for her or something? She hasn’t gotten sick when running with us before. We also went and saw Fast Five, which we enjoyed. I’m going to Idaho for a couple weeks on Monday, so I’m not sure how much I will be on the boards during that time. I will continue running, but there are some family things I need to take care of and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to log on and post or not. So, if you don’t hear from me for a couple weeks, I’ll be back toward the end of May or beginning of June. I’m glad to hear everyone is doing well.
