:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 60 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 33 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter). We have two doggies, one son (Gage) who is two and are expecting our second this coming January. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for United Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and two full marathons including the Goofy Challenge. My favorite distance is the half marathon and I hope that after the baby I can train to reach my goal of a sub 2 hour race. Another long distance goal of mine is to complete a 50K and eventually maybe a 50 miler.
GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

rubato, aka Tandy - Hi. My name is Tandy and I’m the mother of a fabulous 12 year old preteen son. :lovestruc I’ve been married to Frank (a non runner) for 18 years. I’m a full time student, going back to school to become a nurse. I have always run for fitness, but it wasn’t until my impending
40th birthday that I decided to become a distance runner. I love the miles and can’t wait to run my first ultra-marathon someday.

RunRookie, aka Rick - My name is Rick and I live in Crystal Lake, IL. I am married with three children (one 13yr old still at home). I am a new runner, having started in April 2011. My initial goals were to lose 160 pounds, improve my overall fitness, and to live a healthier lifestyle. Since then, I have run 15 races and lost 110 pounds! I am a big fan of Star Trek, Star Wars, Sci-Fi in general, Disney, photography, music, movies, and technology/gadgets. And I keep a fitness blog at rickpeete.squarespace.com.

RadioFanatic, aka KimberlyI'm 39 mama of an almost 4 year old boy, will be 40 by the race; and was goaded into doing this past 1/2 by friends who knew I could do it although I hadn't run a minute in my life. I started training on May 1, 2011 by doing couch to 5k and the first day was miserable where even running that minute made me want to die. Since then, I've lost 70 pounds, ran the whole 1/2 and am looking forward to my new goal. I'm planning on doing a 1/2 in april and in september, my first full in october here locally and some other 10k and 15k runs in between and my second and most exciting full on the 20th anniversary at disney!

KippWade, aka Kipp - I currently live in Indianapolis, Indiana. My doctors visit in January of 2011 had me at my heaviest weight ever, 282 pounds. It was at this point that I told myself this has to stop. Before moving to Indianapolis in September 2010, I worked with a guy that ran. He told me a lot about it and I had mentioned that I'd had some Disney friends say that we should try a run at Disney World. He convinced me that even I could do it. It took me until March of 2011 to finally start in with the C25K plan. I registered for the 2012 WDW 1/2 in April and committed myself to running. I progressed to Bridge to 10K and then Novice 1/2 Marathon Training by Hal Higdon. Since that doctors visit, I've managed to loose 40 pounds of the 100 I want to loose.

tink06, aka - Stacey - I'm from NY (originally Jersey, but moved to NY with hubby) and have one cool DD who will be 10 in August. I started my weightloss journey back in Dec '04, was doing great, and then started the C25K in '06. I then found Disney Races, and signed up for the Marathon in '08 (I think?) I got to mile 18 and was cut off. Then I did the Minnie 15k, and got my bling. Followed by the Half in '09, and the Princess. Completed the SpaceCoast half later that same year (time was awful, but it was done) and attempted the full in '10. Really undertrained, bad weather, and screaming hip pain - got just past the halfway point and found myself once again on the bus! So... made myself a promise that for the 20th anniversary, I would make the 3rd time a charm and get that Mickey Medal once and for all! So I'm on a mission to shed some unwanted pounds, and get back into shape, so that I can start Marathon training come August! I will succeed this time, and appreciate the kick in the pants and encouragement for you all!

Hi Ya!

We are back in Oxford from our night in Boston. We had a great time at the Sam Adams brewery and the historical walking tour. The walking tour was cool, and we saw where John Hancock, Sam Adams and Paul Revere are buried. Very interesting to be where so many things happened to start our country.
I was able to switch to the half marathon tomorrow and will be taking my sweet time about it. No quest for a PR tomorrow, just enjoying the course and keeping my ankle together. :rolleyes1 Late flight out tomorrow night, back home to Chicago.

Have a great night, Mike :cool2:

I am a Marathoner!!

The AVON Walk for Breast Cancer Marathon yesterday was amazing! It was the second-longest amount of time I have ever spent on my feet -- 7 hours, 39 minutes of walking -- at an average 17:15/mm pace.

I still haven't quite processed the whole thing in my head yet, because I have a Half Marathon Walk to do in about 2.5 hours to finish the 2-day event. I think the legs and feet are up for it. :rotfl: So I might not get a blog entry done until tomorrow night or more likely Monday.

I cannot wait to slap the AVON Walk 39.3 magnet on the back of my car as I drive home this afternoon. My first marathon, my first 39.3 event, and I raised a lot of money to help fund research for breast cancer and help those without insurance get the treatment necessary to be a survivor.

It doesn't get much better than this!

Thanks Vicky for starting the new thread!!!

Hey Mike good to hear from you sounds like a great vaca your family is having.

Rick: You are indeed a marathoner!!!!!! WTG!!!!!! Hope you and Christi where able to enjoy your anniversary as well.

Nothing new with me, not alot on the good this weekend, it is rainy which is good cause we really need it but ment for a washout of a weekend. Dont' really know if I did anything except we hung out in the city all day yesterday, then went to the Jays game and fortunately due to the yucky weather we did not head back to the Eaton Centre as was our plan as there was a shooting in a extremely busy food court. This is stuff is nuts. Unfortunately 1 person is dead but it appears to be drug related. I feel bad for all the innocent victims as usual it is the the people caught in the crossfire. OK rant over.

Rebecca and Robbie hope you also had great races this weekend.
Hope everyone has a great Sunday !!

Hockeychic: Thanks! Christi and I had a great time on our anniversary celebration on Friday night. Nice dinner, saw the Snow White movie, had some good quality time. And Saturday, we just relaxed at the hotel after the marathon. Your Eaton Centre story is scary! I am thankful you guys were not involved! It is so sad when violence destroys lives.

Mike: I am so glad your vacation was fun and relaxing! I can't to see you and hear more. How was the race? Was Liz happy with it? How did your Achilles hold up?

AFM: I finished the AVON Half Marathon Walk today. Had a lot,of fun, and I felt really good coming off the Full yesterday, thanks to a wonderful post-race massage. The race was a "mile" longer than 13! I am very confident in my GPS so I am going to email the organizers about that. But still, I finished in 3:20 at a 13:49/mm pace and was the 6th finisher and 2nd male finisher overall! I was very pleased with that. So that means 39.3 miles in two days!!!! Accomplished!!! (Like Goofy only with the Full being first, then the Half). The AVON 39.3 magnet is already on my car!

Now I am home, just woke up from a 1.5 hour nap, and I am SO TIRED! Got to cook on the grill for Ryan's 14 birthday party tonight. He wants BBQ ribs. So I have to get my tired butt up and moving.

My writing today is dedicated to our warriors who raced and endured this weekend.

Kimmer that's scary stuff, that's why I got my concealled carry license.

Mike and Rick you guys do us proud with how great your coming along. I hope I can hold up my end of the fight this summer after I'm 100% again.

Everyone have a restful evening.

Dave:hippie:

Dave: We are not allowed to carry guns in Canada which I am extremely thankful for and this is not something that happens in Toronto, we are not totally immune to gun violence but honestly it doesn't happen here very often so for this to happen in such a extremely busy very touristy area of Toronto it is crazy. I never feel unsafe in the city but might be a bit leary for awhile.

Hope everyone had a super weekend we are on to Monday and a new weekend. Enjoy it everyone!!!!!

Kim, I'm so glad you're safe! I agree, gun violence is shocking, especially in a country where it's more difficult to get them, legally at least.

Rick, I wish Goofy was set up that way with the full first. I would feel more confident making a decision if it were since I know I want the Mickey, I'm just hesistant to do the half first.

Way to go on finishing both parts of the race! You're going to rock the Goofy!

Mike, I saw you finished on FB, so congrats! Hopefully now you'll have time to recover and get better before the next one.

AFM, the race was AWESOME! Some of you have already seen my pictures and posts about it, but here is my race report. Please feel free to comment on it.

The course was extremely flat after the first 5K near the falls. It was very, very serene. I can't tell you how many pictures of water and forest I have, lol :rolleyes1. If you can fit this one into your schedule, I would do it. I loved it way better than my Toronto race last month and I PRed.

My new time to beat, based on the chip, is 2:20:30.4 :woohoo:. I'm not sure what a reasonable improvement would be but I think I'd like to see 2:15 by the end of the year. I was also pleasantly surprised to have little knee issues given my injury last week.

Oh, and on Thursday, I put in our initial 'hold the room' booking at the Art of Animation resort for a Little Mermaid room. We may or may not be staying there but I wanted to get in if I could just in case.

Hi team! Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend! Congrats to all our racers! I can't wait to read all the race reports :)

Kim - The shooting was scary that's for sure. I'm glad you didn't have a chance to go back to the Eaton Center. Sue and I usually eat lunch in that food court and it is packed on a weekday so I can only imagine what the weekend was like. Yikes! I enjoyed the cooler weather because it was easier to run in... the crazy rain storm on Friday, I could have done without.

Dave - I don't think we're allowed concealed weapons in Canada - only cops and armored truck personnel carry them. I was even told by a cop that I could get in trouble for carrying pepper spray. Crazy! How's the achilles doing now that you've gotten in some PT treatments?

Rick - Congrats on your Avon walk! That was some serious mileage over the weekend! Are you aiming for another 100 miles this month too? Hope the BBQ was a success and that Ryan had a fantastic birthday!

Mike - I can't believe you did a half marathon! How many states have you done races in now and what's left? Don't forget to go international and come up to Toronto for a race :) The Boston trip sounds like fun!

Robbie - How was the relay?

Rebecca - I'm off to check out your RR after I post here!

Regina, Kipp, Sue, Tandy, Kimberley, Emily - :wave2:

AFM - What a crazy weekend! We had a wicked rain storm on Friday. My team captain for volleyball Matt emailed everyone to say that we were still playing. To be fair, when he sent out the email it was just heavy rain but by the time the afternoon rolled around, the rain had gotten cold and there was heavy winds. The subways were flooded and had partially shutdown. I figured I was going to have trouble getting home so I went out to the beach just to see what it was like and it was like a monsoon - the rain was whipping the sand and water everywhere! I hid out in someone's car while we talked about what to do. The wind was so cold, we were just texting even though all the cars were side by side. The organizers called the games and the team went out for food.

I got in some running on the weekend - I did a 4.5 miler and a 9 miler. Both went really well. No knee pain but a bit of ankle soreness *sigh* If it's not one thing, it's the other LOL. I'm going to have it looked at tomorrow but to be safe, no heels for now.

I had a request from a friend to bake a treat for her BF - it was his birthday yesterday and he has an egg allergy so I ended up working in the kitchen for part of Sunday on that. It was a lot of fun - I just made my PB chocolate pie because that has no egg. I've never tried using an egg replacer before and was nervous trying something new last minute. Kind of like running LOL :)

Oh and my blog got into the top 9 on a food blogging site called Foodbuzz. It isn't there any more because the top 9 changes everyday but if you're on FB, I posted a picture of it there. I was so surprised! The post that got me one was the one I made for strawberry basil scones. So check it out if you have time! I'm also working on a Facebook page to match up with my blog. I'll post a link when I'm done with it :)

Tonight, I have my baking class and then I'm in the gym tomorrow and Wednesday. I have to get back into running in the morning but am so low on sleep right now. But Kimberly and Rick have both inspired me to increase my mileage so I'm shooting for 75 this month.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Sorry your volleyball was rained out, but did not sound like good conditions to be out in!

Mike - Glad you enjoyed Boston!

Rick - Congrats on your first Marathon! good job on the 39.9 miles!

Saylan - Congrats on your race!

AFM - Bike ride yesterday went well, it was a very hilly course, and I do not do well on hills, but I did not have to get off the bike and walk on any of them! Turned out to be more like 31.5 miles than 34 miles. We started early, and it was overcast which means it did not get quite as hot, until later in the day when we were off the bikes. Enjoyed the Expo area, and spent more money than we planned (of course - I think it was John Bingham that made a comment about expos - something about the compulsion to spend money). We got home in time to pick up dogs from kennel. Today will be hot here, we are headed out early for easy bike ride.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Morning all!

Quick check in for me...

Congrats to all who raced!

Rick - WTG on the 39.9+ miles!

I didn't get in my workout this weekend, but did walk up and down a street fair, and avoided street fair food! Got up and got in my 40 minutes of walking this morning.

Hope everyone has a great day!! :cool1:

Hi all

I hope to drop in to check up on everyone later in the week, but congrats to Saylan and Rick on your impressive race results this past weekend. And welcome to the group tink!

Here is my race report from this past weekend:

On Saturday, June 2, I participated in the Red Island Relay. Teams of 1, 2, or 6 competed in a five leg relay race that involves:
7.75km run
27km road bike
10.5 km run
20 km Mountain bike
6 km canoe or kayak (2 people)

I partnered up with my brother in law Sean. I did both run legs, Sean did both biking legs, and we did the kayak together. This is actually our second time doing this event. We did it in 2010, we finished dead last in the two person division with a time of 4:45. However, I was just getting into running then and Sean was really out of shape…and I do stress the word really! Needless to say, we were hoping for a big improvement.

Note: The descriptions of my runs are on the brief side, as my recollection of them is a little fuzzy (you’ll see why in the last paragraph)

Leg 1
I decided to do this leg slower than if it was a standalone race so I would not gas out for the next run. I finished in 37:10. My 2010 time, when I tried to go out strong in this leg, was 39:55, which is an improvement of 2:45!

Leg 2
As I said, in 2010, Sean was really out of shape. Then, this past fall he became super committed to fitness and eating right. Anyways, he really nailed this one, 47:26. His 2010 road bike time was 1:07:37…so this was an improvement of 20:11. He finished this leg 3rd in our 2 man division, and blew by a solo entrant who represented Canada at the Beijing Olympics in the Modern Pentathlon!

Leg 3
I tried to keep moving during the break, but I felt stiff due to the layoff. I think I would have preferred to run ~18 km straight than splitting it up with a break in between. Nevertheless, I feel pretty good about my time of 54:16. In 2010, it look me 1:00:57, so I improved by 6:41. Unfortunately, the Olympian passed me in the last half mile. She was very nice and encouraging as she passed me though!

Leg 4
Sean said he was passed by more people than he passed, but he still completed the mountain bike leg in 45:52, a 11:34 improvement from his 2010 time of 57:26.

Leg 5
While Sean was biking, I was to get the kayak ready. The tide went out and my job was to drag it to the water’s edge again. Unfortunately, we were among several who rented a two person kayak from the same company and I had trouble locating ours (excuse below). When Sean came, he found our kayak and were on our way. This was only my second time in a kayak, and my first racing…in 2010, we had a canoe. Nevertheless, we did fairly well and finished in 49:04, a 10:11 improvement from our 2010 time of 59:15.

Overall, we finished 6th out of 25 two person team with a time of 3:53…a 51 minute improvement from two years ago! Oh yeah, we beat the Olympian!

While we were very happy with our results, we feel that we can do even better next year. Frankly, I was not at the top of my game. I had a critical issue at work that kept me up working overnight Thursday…so by the time I got to bed almost midnight Friday night, I had been up about 42 straight hours. Then I had to get up again at 6am Saturday for the race. I think this sleep deprivation slowed me down a bit and definitely lead to the kayak finding snafu and several other mental errors like forgetting my Garmin, not bringing money, ect. Let’s just say it was a good thing Sean was driving home! Despite this, we had a great time and plan on doing it again next year!

Hi! :wave2:

Congrats to everyone that raced over the weekend! I've been busy reading all of the nice reports everyone has been posting!

AFM - I've finally put my "maintenance" plan into effect. I started Sunday night with a weigh in of 251. Here it is in a nutshell:

Sunday - Upper Body Resistance band & 30 Minute Yoga
Monday - Run (what every I'm comfortable with)
Tuesday - Walk or light run (working on keeping in fat burning zone)
Wednesday - Lower body Resistance Band & 30 Minute Yoga
Thursday - Rest
Friday - Walk or Light Run
Saturday - Long(er) run

I've based it on my 1/2 Marathon training from last fall. (Hal Higdons Novice 1 program).

I did end up spending my birthday money from earlier in May, I wound up winning a bid on a Garmin 405CX. I just got it last Thursday and Saturday was my first run with it. Mostly I'm liking it. The HR Strap is UNCOMFORTABLE compared to the Polar HR. I'm still playing with it, trying to load it with some interval training routines, but I've not had success with that yet.

Other big news :) Dad and I are going to compete on weight loss again this year! I happen to call him up Saturday after making our last ADR for our after Thanksgiving trip later this year. He stated that we needed to get ready again for the trip, which ironically enough, is the exact same week we decided to do this before last years trip!

Last year my trip was right at Labor Day and the week following. At 25 weeks prior, we started our challenge. This year, right at 25 weeks prior, we're starting another challenge!

We're going to go at it in Biggest Looser fashion (biggest % lost at the end "wins").

The difference for me this year is that I have a 1/2 Marathon BEFORE the end of the contest and then gearing up for the WDW 1/2 following in January.

I'll be posting all of my updates on my blog like I did last year.

I did look at my local running store and they don't carry New Balance. I stopped by Dick's Sporting goods and they didn't have the Minimus shoe I wanted to try on. Although I was SHOCKED that they did have my normal running shoe in STOCK! (Brooks Adreneline GTS, Extra Wide - 4E) But they're more expensive than if I order from my local running shop.
