Hakuna Matada - Chilly November

Lynn, the tub is way in the future, first is replacing the double back door with a sliding door and replacing the front door with a one with some glass in the front so we can see out of it. Then a patio for entertaining.

I did a track workout this morning to determine what pace I will be doing the half and full at Disney. I think 2:50 for the half and 5:40 for the full. I did a good warm up and then got into a pace that was easy and comfortable but not strolling. Comfortable race walking that I could hold for however many miles I needed to was 13:00 min per mile. I did 4 miles and didn't look at the watch till the end so that I wouldn't be influenced by time just how it felt.

What is everyone else's planned pace for the races?

Dave:hippie:

Dave: Oh, the joy of renovation! Frank and I have built our own house and renovated 2. I love it. Of course, I have the fun jobs like tiling. Frank gets the hard stuff like plumbing, electrical and building. Those are great goals for the races. That whole new shoes during half thing makes me nervous. I have to break mine in a bit. But, then, I don't use racing flats.

Lynn: We finally got your wind yesterday. It is insane. I had to run into it yesterday and today so I had a break when I turned around.
Chocolate and cherry is such a good combo that the cookies sound really yummy. We had an outdoor hottub for a few years, but it was ridiculous how much money we spent on water and chemicals. I didn't run then, so I do wish I had it now.

Regina: Yeah to feeling better!!!!! I hope the quad holds out for your long runs this weekend. I am either doing 12 or 14 this Monday too. I'll be thinking of you while I'm running. I will try to post a pic when we're done with the rooms, but it'll be awhile. We're taking our time.

Sue: I am not ready for winter either. Make it go away! I do love snow though. We don't get enough for me to need snow tires, but when I was growing up, we just pretty much kept chains on all winter.

Emily: Congrats on your fast mile! I always love hitting new milestones. Glad you had fun with your friend. I haven't seen most of my friends in so long that I feel like I'm being neglectful.

Vicky: I wish you hadn't even mentioned Grand Marnier buttercream frosting on here. I am drooling just thinking about it. :laughing:Congrats on the weight loss. At least someone is doing well. ;)

AFM: I ended up running 4 yesterday and 3 with Harrison today. I finally hit under 8 minute miles yesterday. It's taken me forever since the injury. But, it was just barely. I went to school and studied for a few hours, and now, it's back to work on the house. My room is completely full of all the clothes that were in the guestroom closet (which is now Harrison's room). I am gonna have to get rid of some stuff. I have clothes that I haven't worn in over 5 years, so I think it's safe to donate them. I'm trying to get the house organized and clean this weekend so that I can get grocery shopping done on Wednesday, and get started on the cooking.

I don't have any building skills Tandy, if I did I could do a lot more around the house. But this year has been a lean one for fix up money, taken a few trips and gained a few more memories though. Next year I'm going to be doing even more destination races so probably won't have much fix up money next year either.

It's storming outside so this morning's workout will be an hour of walking in the Mall then, marketing and Breakfast at the new I-Hop they just built here.

Have a magical sunday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Hi, all,

I have a 5k this afternoon that I am running with my two daughters to benefit the PTA. New shoes are just fine; so happy to have that resolved!

Lynn: Hope you managed to get out yesterday.

Tandy: Great job on the pace!

Regina: Glad that the leg is better!

Sue: Did you get to the parade? Ours was yesterday but I didn't make it. Too much work to do to get ready for friends and relatives visiting next weekend.

Vicky: Congrats on the weight loss! Regarding the expo, thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it. Have you ever been there on Friday morning? Think if I get there at 10 that I'll be in good shape? I have to get the girls' packets for their races later that morning too so I absolutely must go at that time.

Dave: I am hoping to finish the half in under 3:00. I finished my first half (2011 Princess) in 3:28. This will be my second half.

Hey team.

How is everyone. Sorry as my usual excuse life is just so busy hard finding time to get on here and I am trying to read everything just not any time to post.

Hope you are all doing well.

Vicky sent you a few text messages last week did you get them? Are you booked?

Good Morning Team!

Kim - Good morning Kim!

Dave - those sound like great times for the half and the full!

Tandy - We renovated and added on to our old house - the one we are in now we bought new - but we did the whole basement. Scott is really good at building, I get the jobs like painting (he is a lousy painter - I think on purpose!), making curtains etc.

Elizabeth - Nope, never got out yesterday, but did get out first thing this morning!

AFM - I am starting a new regime! This morning I walked the dogs as soon as I got up (wind is usually calm first thing in the morning) - it was 16 degrees but wind only 4 mph! Yesterday wind picked up while we were shopping and did not quit until sundown again. I did get an hour in on the spin bike. Predictions call for less wind - we will see.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi Team!

Dave- It is nice to hear you have your pace determined for Goofy. I have no planned pace. My goal is to finish. Hope your mall workout went well! Ihop sounds delicious!

Tandy- Haha thanks! I’ll let you know how it goes tomorrow! I always enjoyed decorating and painting the different rooms in our house. Lowes and Home Depot were 2 of my favorite stores. It’s a bit harder to do though now that we are in military housing. I really miss my house. Congrats on hitting under 8 miles! You’re getting closer to where you were pre-injury. Hope the house cleaning and organization is going well.

Elizabeth- Good luck on your 5k today! Hope it goes well for you and your daughters! Glad your new shoes are good to go!

Kim- Hi! Hope training is going well.

Lynn- Glad you and the pups made it out for a walk this morning! Good luck with the new regime!

AFM, 7 mile run is finished for the day, so that is nice. No major issues during the run. I am going to try to do a bit of icing and stick rolling today in preparation of my long run tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me that it goes better than my 13 mile run. I hope you all are enjoying your Sunday and your training goes well!

Perfect weather for our PTA 5k.

My oldest daughter and her friend finished in 45:06.

My little one and I finished in 47:32. She stopped running at 1.5 miles when she realized that she would not get a finisher's medal. :lmao:

Have a great week, everyone!

It poured rain today and I'm hoping it will not be raining in the morning even though it's forcasted. I want to do a hard interval workout at the track in the morning and I don't want to do it in the rain. I plan to try something different and I'm anxious to see how it works out. I'm upping the intensity again, as the saying goes, "Train insane or you remain the same".

Lynn that sounds like a plan going early.

The forcast for our Turkey Trot is for 40s and clear so that will be ok, just colder than I like for racing. The course is a kitty litter cross country path that has s serious hill that you do twice.

Dave:hippie:

Hi team! Hope everyone is having a great weekend! We had another sunny and warm weekend here. Definitely no complaints here :)

Dave - Make sure you hit that hill with lots of GRRR!! I like your quote! It's absolutely true! Unless you push yourself, you'll never become faster, stronger etc. Are there are a lot of other walkers in the mall in the morning? Do you go before the stores open? How was the iHop breakfast? Sounded yummy :)

Elizabeth - Congrats to your girls on their 5K! Hope they had a lot of fun :) Sorry your youngest didn't get a medal. Did they run out or did they decide to stop handing them out after a certain time?

I plan to head over to the Expo on Thursday morning when it opens. I've never been on a Friday but imagine it would be less busy later in the day. I went there in January on a Saturday around lunch to have my ankle taped at the KT Tape booth and it was moderately busy but not crazy. Let me know what you decide. I'll be at the WISH meet on Friday afternoon so I can give you your packet then.

Regina - Good luck on your 14 miler tomorrow! I hope it goes well and that you have good weather as well! Make sense that you run on the TM that early in the morning. Sometimes when I run after work and it's dark, it makes me a little nervous... not so much about the traffic on the road but hidden potholes or dips in the pavement. The massage was pretty good! I got most of the kinks and tight muscles worked out. This MT is easier to talk to (kind of like a mini therapist) but the other one I've been seeing does a better sports massage overall.

Lynn - Did I see on FB that your bikes have snow tires? I think that's pretty cool! I know it's winter but hopefully the snow doesn't stick around too long. My friend is travelling to the States next week for Black Friday. I think he's nuts (and doing it for the attention - that's another story) but I'll see if he'll go to the grocery store for me while he's there. Good job on getting out first thing in the morning! Bundle up! Sounds chilly!

Emily - Congrats on your pace for the magic mile! That's awesome!! How did your 11 miler go? Is your friend doing the 11 miler with you as well?

Sue - How was the Santa Claus parade? We had the one in Toronto today but I stayed away from downtown. Great weather though! During my LR on Saturday, I was thinking a bit about your Christmas decoration comment. Then I thought about how I really wanted to make cupcakes so I cut my run short at 11 miles and went home LOL

Tandy - Oh the cupcakes were terrible :( Just kidding! Emptying your closet is the only way you can fill them back up again! Are you having lots of people over for Thanksgiving dinner or is it just you, DH and Harrison? Congrats on getting back up to 8 m/m! That's awesome!! You normally run at a 7:30 m/m pace?

Kim - I'm so sorry :( I didn't get your texts. I'm not sure what happened because I was getting texts from other people. I went back and looked at my phone and didn't see any messages from you :( I wasn't ignoring you, promise! No I didn't book yet. I was hold with them twice, once for 45 minutes and the other time for an hour. It's hard to stay on hold much longer than that :( I wish Air Canada was more like West Jet - they let you access your credits on line. I'm going to try calling again tomorrow.

AFM - I did an 11 mile run and a 6 mile run this weekend. I made it to 11 miles out of the 13 when my knee started feeling sore. Based on my pacing, I should have finished the 13 in about 2:30 so I'm happy with that time. I did my 6 miler today with a pace of 10:38 m/m and the last split was done with a pace of 9:27 m/m so I'm happy with that.

The Grand Marnier cupcakes were pretty good and I ended up with leftover ganache which I turned into truffles. Yum! I made a couple with cocoa powder, a few with chopped pecans and a couple with fleur de sel - I'm not sure how those ones tasted.

Oh and I'm such a super klutz! I went to Starbucks last night and spilled hot tea all over my hand. I have a nice patch of red tender skin just under my thumb. I think there might be a blister too that didn't quite make it to the surface. Hopefully it goes away in a few days.

Tomorrow I've got training and apparently the Cake Boss, Buddy Valastro is in town for a book signing to launch his new book. I'm going to see if my manager will let me sneak out a little bit before lunch to go. If the lineups are crazy, I'm not going to stay.

Have a great night everyone!

I almost forgot ... Here are the medals I picked out for our team Turkey Trot. Sorry I'm not that web savy. Let me know if the link doesn't work. I have the pricing on my work email so I'll post them tomorrow. The medals come with the option of a ribbon (but they don't have lime green), dog tag chain or key chain which I think is kind of cool. Let me know which ones you guys like!

https://picasaweb.google.com/104989...02011?authkey=Gv1sRgCO651PP17ujWeg&feat=email

I will try to pick up the medals to save us the shipping costs. If I can't, it's an extra $10 or $1/medal

Cost:

Dog Tag w/chain - $4.24
($2.50 - medal, $1.25 chain + 13% sales tax)

Dog Tag w/keychain - $3.67
($2.50 - medal, $0.75 keychain ring + 13% sales tax)

Round medal w/keychain or ribbon - $5.09
($3.75 - medal, $0.75 keychain ring or ribbon + 13 % sales tax)

Vicky the mall isn't crowed at all with walkers most most mornings. I get there at 7am and the mall stores don't open untill 10am. The closer it gets to 10am the more crowed it gets.

I need to get a new scale, mine still says I weigh 186 and I think I should be weighing less than that!

How did everyone make it through the weekend? No one whacked a major muscle group? I saw on facebook that Eva had a super 22 mile run.

Have a magical day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Happy Monday morning team.

Dave: So, how many laps around the mall are we talking? Does it get repetitive? I love shopping so much that I would probably love it, but just thinking like a guy, I don't know.
Maybe you should get a new scale. :thumbsup2
I'm there with you on the building budget. If I keep going to Disney, I'll never get the new windows that we are in desperate need of. We also need new carpet, but I'm going to wait until my child stops spilling everything (in other words, when he moves out).

Vicky: Oh, I'm so sorry you burned yourself. Sounds like something I would do. All those truffles sound amazing. I don't know how you're losing weight when you're baking all these amazing things. And, no, I don't need to fill it back up! I'm emptying it to combine it with my guest room closet that was also full of my clothes. It's actually a little scary! I like both of the medals and will be happy with any chain, ribbon, whatever. Probably, whichever is cheaper.

Elizabeth: Congrats to the girls for doing an awesome job!!!:cheer2:

Lynn: I always have to paint too. But, it's because I'm a perfectionist. I think Frank is also bad at painting on purpose. Oh well. As long as he just leaves me alone to do it, it's all good. I try to do the dog walking early also, at about 5:30 am. That way, it's done. Plus, I'd rather walk in the dark than run.

Regina: Yes, I would find it tough to live in a house and not be able to do what I wanted to it. But, I'll be there some day too. We're probably opting for a condo or apartment when Harrison graduates and moves out. We're over it. But, then again, Frank has the blueprints for the house he wants to build, so who knows? How did your run go today?

Kim: Glad you are checking in. Hope to hear more about your life when you have time.

AFM: I am getting ready to head out for 14 miles. My longest so far post injury is 10, so I'm pushing it a bit. But, I'm going to adopt my ultra marathon strategy and do a 9/1 interval. I think I can handle the 14 pretty easily. Since my goal is a 12 minute pace for the event, and my long run pace is 9 minute miles, I think it's all doable.

We got Harrison's 2 rooms pretty much done. We aren't buying the new bedroom furniture yet, and he's not getting his new couch until Christmas. But, he got all his toys out of my hall way, and got everything organized. I got my dressers cleaned out and just unloaded the closet. It's going to be a loooooooong day of working on that. I think I have 2 times more clothes than I do room. Just taking the shoes out, I'm getting rid of 10-12 pair. I keep holding on to my old running shoes thinking I can use them for other things, but I never do. So, they're gone!

So, I'm off to get my day going. I walked 3 miles with the dog, am running 14, will run 1.5 after school with Harrison, and then will go to zumba tonight. I figure I can eat a lot today!

All is right with my world. It was pouring rain outside so I was banished to the mall. I warmed up for a mile and a half then set another personal best time for the 4 mile mall route. Took 16 seconds off the record I set there last saturday. Rhino the hamster to Bolt, "I eat danger", Bolt to Rhino, "Are ya hungry!", Rhino, "Starving!". Hell Yeah I'm starving, Grrrrrrrrrr!!!

Tandy, the mall is .8 miles so I did 7 laps today. One brisk walking, one easy race walking technique then 5 laps, 4 miles, in 45:55. Last lap was 9:03.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Our hybrids and Scott’s cyclocross bike have “all terrain” tires, they have a pretty aggressive tread on them, makes them work well on gravel, sand, or snow (nothing would work well on ice). They are not as fast as our road bikes with road tires, (thin and smooth), but good for inclement weather. the cold is much easier to handle without the wind, and getting out early I usually do not have to deal with the wind. My French is not very good, but doesn’t “fleur de sel” mean “flower of salt”? That sounds strange on something sweet. Take care of your burn! Whatever the group decides on the medals is fine with us. If we are lucky, we will get in a good bike ride today which should count - otherwise, the weather looks good most of the week.

Dave - Going early has worked so far! Of course, it is only my dog walk, not a major workout, but the dogs are really enjoying it after 6 days of no walks because of weather! Hope it isn’t raining today for you (but forecast did not look good).

Regina - Good job on your 7 mile run! Good luck on the long run today!

Tandy - I know what you are saying about full closets - we have 5 bedrooms in our house, and every closet is stuffed! We also have plastic storage boxes full of t-shirts, socks and other stuff that doesn’t fit in closets - they are piled under our stairs. Good luck with your planned program today - sounds like you could eat as much as you liked!

Elizabeth - Good job to your family in the 5K - what? no finishers medals?!?

AFM - Second morning of an early morning dog walk! It might be nice enough today for a bike ride. Spent 30 min on spin bike yesterday.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi, all,

I've got an appointment with the treadmill this evening but it is such a beautiful, warm day that I may get outside to run. That always feels best.

Vicky: I talked it over with DH and we'll just plan to arrive Friday, right at 10 when the expo opens and take our chances. If it is too crowded then I'll get the girls race stuff and then return later in the day for mine. Hope the burn is healing well; what a terrible place to have one! As for the medals, I like both. I like the key chain idea!

Lynn: Glad the dogs got their walk. How far do you take them? Claire's next race is the Mickey Mile so she'll be sure to get a finisher's medal (and ears too!), that is, if I can convince her to do another one.

Tandy: You set an example for me: I worked all weekend on my daughters' and my bedrooms: cleaning, organizing, repainting. I have about another day's worth of work but it looks great. So what is our next project? ;)

Regina: How did the longer run go yesterday?

Dave: You'll own that hill during the Turkey Trot! Grrr!

Hi Team,

Sorry to be MIA again! Things have been busy to the minute around here. Last week week we bagged 77 bags of leaves for pick up, I volunteered at Robert's school, Robert and Liz had a race, work is in the silly season, I trained two days, and we had the end of season run club party. In the middle of the week there were a couple of days that I only got to sleep about 2 hours. There is more but I just can't remember all of it!

On the 12th, I finished the Chicago Pefect 10 miler, which turned out to be a great way to finish the year. It started at Navy Pier and ran along Lake Michigan, passing the yacht club, Field museum, Soldier field, and the Shedd Aquarium. We were literally steps from the lake. It was so nice to park in a heated garage and have the packet pick up and bathrooms all inside. The start was just outside the door. I finished with just over a ten mm pace and got a very nice medal.

On the 13th, Robert ran his very first one mile race. Liz ran with him while I took alot of pictures! He finished in 11:38 and had a great time, getting his own tech shirt, small medal, and a certificate with his name on it.

This past Saturday night we attended the end of season run club party and had a great time. There is a wide variety of runners in the club, from newbies to ultra runners. Two of the guys did TRI ironmans, thats three times the length of an ironman. I think about seven miles of swimming, 336 miles of biking, and 78.6 miles of running. One of them set a new course record. They allow 60 hours to finish.
We all wore our medals for the year and the club gives out fun awards for alot of the members, always with an explanation. Liz, who seemed to always be at someones race, cheering them on, got the "Liz gets around" award. I got the "medal master".

I got some training in last week, with two runs and a session of weight training. My log says I haven't lifted since April of 2010. I was sore for several days afterward. Yesterday, I ran 10 miles (11 with warm up /cool down) with Rick and the miles flew by as we talked. Its nice to have someone to do a long run with!

Today its time to pick up more leaves, get new tires on one of the cars, and a parent-teacher conference this evening. Then its off to work at 10pm!
I still have to clean out the gutters, and get the Christmas lights up on the house this week. My next night off is this coming Saturday. Hopefully, I can get out of work each day at a decent time, to be able to get some runs in. Oh, and we also volunteered at the run club Turkey Trot on Thursday.

I hope all is well with everyone! - Mike :cool2:

Vicky,

Thanks for looking up the TT medals, I like the round one!

-Mike :cool2:

Mike: I will never complain about being busy again. My goodness!!! You must have been so proud of Robert. That is just fantastic. I think I've given up on the leaves for awhile. I just can't take any more blisters on my hands from the rakes.

Elizabeth: I'm thinking basement. What do you think? Seriously though, great job getting organized. It always stinks to do it, but then it feels great.

Lynn: Wow. 5 bedrooms. I would say that I'm jealous, but I wouldn't want to clean them all. Yes, it seems that no matter how much space a person has, they fill it. We keep downsizing and keep getting rid of things, but they just pile up again.

Dave: Great job on the walk. You are just super fast. I am truly happy when I can walk a 15 minute mile, so can't even imagine a walk that fast.

AFM: I did it. 14 miles is done. Now, I only need to add 30 miles onto the end of that, and I'll be good for my ultra! :rotfl: I tried really hard to slow it down today. I did the 9/1 intervals, and sometimes 8/2 intervals. But, I still finished too fast. It's going to kill me later, when the miles start adding up. I cannot seem to pace myself in the beginning. I ended up with a 9:10 pace, and was hoping for more along the lines of 10:00. Oops. The worst part was that my ankle started hurting at mile 5 and didn't stop until mile 11. It feels fine now, but I think I need inserts in my new shoes if I'm going to use them for real mileage. They don't seem to have enough arch support for me. They were fine for zumba and my short runs, so they may just be relegated to that.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Hi team! Happy Monday!

Lynn - Yes that's what fleur de sel translates to - flower of salt! It's basically salt that's harvested by hand. It's really light and flakey compared to table salt which is hard and crystalized. I put some onto the truffle because I wanted to experiment with sweet and salty flavours. I know a lot of people like that combination ... I'm so so on it. Good job on getting out early for the dog walk! How do the pups like getting out early :)

Dave - Good job on the speedy walk! The mall near my house use to have a walking club but then the mall got converted into an outdoor mall so I'm not sure if they still have one. There were a lot of seniors in the area so walking outdoors in the winter probably doesn't work out that well.

Tandy - I'm with ya! If I walked in the mall, I'd go shopping! Some running stores will take old running shoes and donate them to 3rd world countries. I usually keep a pair or two for the gym, a pair in the trunk of my car and then my sister sometimes takes one for badminton. Sounds like you're getting quite the workout moving all the furniture around and sorting through clothing and shoes. Hope the 14 miler is speedy and pain free! I will update the medal post with the prices.

Elizabeth - I think first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon is a good time to go. I've read about people going to the expo later in the afternoon and evening and just being able to walk in and out. Yeah, the burn is crummy :( I bought some special bandaids that are made of a water/gel. They're see through but they protect the healing skin from rubbing against clothing or other things and getting irritated.

Mike - For a second, I read that you came in 12th for the 10 miler :) Sounds like a good race! Was it very windy along the waterfront? One of the girls I use to see at the gym a lot now works FT in Chicago. I'll have to let her know about the races. You raked up 77 bags of leaves! There's got to be some lifting involved in that ... I know its not the same as going to the gym but when the leaves get wet or just the sizes of the leaf bags. Yikes! You must have a lot of trees or a giant yard :) How's your Goofy training coming along?

Regina - Hope your 14 miler goes well!

AFM - I was looking at the training plan I'm following for the Goofy. And it seems like a lot of miles to me. Then I looked at the Hal Higdon plan (which I normally follow) and it has cut back weeks in between the big mileage weeks so - 18/13/19/12/20/12/8 And that makes more sense to me.

So I'm going to alter my training plan to look like:

Nov 21 17/8
Nov 28 18/9
Dec 5 12/6
Dec 12 20/10
Dec 19 12/6
Dec 26 8/4
Jan 2 - Race weekend!

What do you guys think? The Goofy plan has:
Nov 21 17.4/8.7
Nov 28 18.6/9.3
Dec 5 14.9/7.5
Dec 12 18.6/9.3
Dec 19 18.6/9.3
Dec 26 14.9/7.5
Jan 2 - Race Weekend!

They're not huge changes - I'm just mostly throwing in an extra cutback week and a much shorter run on the week of the 26th. What do you guys think? I'm not going for a specific time necessarily (but I don't want to be on course for 6+ hours either). And ... I also didn't want to run 18-20 miles on Christmas Eve/Day

Anyway, I will update the medal post with the prices. Let me know which ones you guys like! I like either one!

Have a great day :wave2:
