Hakuna Matada - Chilly November

Good morning team!!!!

Just finished todays minutes. We are out to a hockey game tonight so know I wouldn't get it done and I am not missing any more steps between now and marathon weekend. What a concept eh? Attempting to do a race sorta trainned :lmao: Things are feeling good and I can't wait to get back to disney, I know I was just there in October but not the same without meeting up with my WISH family.

Hi team! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating today! Hope you're having a relaxing day off with family and friends! I see we're just slightly over 40 days until the big event in January. How's everyone doing with their training?

Kim - LOL! Yeah! What's this business about training for a race! Did you get annual passes or just regular tickets? Have fun at the hockey game!

Dave - No official Turkey Trot here since its American Thanksgiving. I plan to use one of my runs this weekend for the team turkey trot! Good job on the 9.5 miles! And yeah, I didn't like being yelled at by the delivery guy... only my mom gets to yell at me nowadays and even she doesn't do that very often anymore. I'm not sure if she's gotten tired of it or maybe there isn't much to yell at anymore  Have fun at your Thanksgiving dinner!

Rick - Good luck on your races this weekend! That's awesome that you're doing two races! I haven't ever had to wait that long in a packet pick up line. I find they usually move pretty quickly. Maybe there was someone in front who was picking up for a large group. Did you get any cool goodies?

Tandy - I know that feeling when you get on the scale and the number isn't where it's suppose to be. I think if you put your mind to, you'll drop the 10 lbs very easily! But good idea to start after Thanksgiving because you don't want to deprive yourself when everyone else is enjoying goodies. What kind of pies did you make? How did your 5 miles with Harrison go?

Sue - Looks like I should have gone running on Wednesday instead of Tuesday. Yesterday night was nice and clear - no wind or rain!

AFM - All this talk of Thanksgiving made me wish we were doing another Thanksgiving dinner. So last night I opened up a can of pumpkin puree and made some pumpkin mac and cheese! I thought I grabbed a box of what I thought was whole wheat pasta but it turns out it was just pasta with extra Omega 3/6. Oh well. I didn't realize all the vitamins and nutrients that pumpkin contained. It's got:

  • Alpha-carotene
  • Beta-carotene
  • Vitamins C and E
  • Fiber
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Pantothenic acid

I'm not saying to go and load up on pumpkin cheesecake or pumpkin mac & cheese :cutie: But if it's a side dish at one of you're dinners tonight, definitely don't feel bad eating it.

And to answer Tandy's question... I am thankful for my good health, family, the nice weather we've been having recently, having a job and especially for good friends who are there to support, encourage and to listen.

Tonight I'm headed to the gym and then I have 3/4 of a giant can of pumpkin puree that I need to do something with. Hmm...

Hope everyone is having a great day! :wave2:

Vicky: thanks for the encouragement! It really helps! While I was waiting, I opted to engage my line neighbors in conversation and avoid looking at all the cool stuff in rows beside me. probably the first time I was in a running store and didn't buy something. Yeah, I figured if I 'bracket' my Thanksgiving meal with two races, it would help me prevent gaining weight from eating. We'll see how that plays out... ;)

AFM: I had a fun Turkey Trot today! It was pretty chilly out there... mostly due to a 12mph wind that wouldn't let up. I felt good when the gun went off and started at a 9:45 pace for the first 1.5 miles. Then after the water station, I started my negative split at 9:20. At the 2-mile marker, the clock said 19:20 so I was encouraged! At Mile 3, the clock read 29:10 so I ran with all I had left!

My official time was 29:30, a new PR and my first sub-30 minute finish in a 5K! I actually did it! I was so excited! I saw one of the people I had waited in line with at packet pick-up and we celebrated our finishes! The post-race breakfast was perfect -- pancakes, french toast, sausages, a banana, and water. So yummy!

So now I get to relax, hang with the family, and enjoy a tasty dinner later tonight. And then decide whether I run hard during Saturday's 5K or just take it at an easy pace just for the fun of it. Hmmmm.. can I quell the competitor in me? :rotfl:

Happy Thanksgiving!

Vicky - Thanks for the info, but we never have plain yogurt, just flavored, I have used flavored yogurt in recipes that called for plain if the flavor did not detract from recipe. The packaged crumb cake with apple was good - we ate the whole thing in one day! Let us know how the South African donut comes out. I love the iPad, and use it all the time. I got it for the eBooks, but use it for Sudoku and Solitaire all the time, traveling, it becomes my computer - nearly everywhere has wireless now days. We have the original ones, so no camera - not sure what else the iPad2 has that the first ones did not. The down side - if you want it only for books - the screen is not the “easy on the eyes” screen of the eReaders - but it is back lit so you do not need a light in low light situations. We always but a screen protector on all our stuff - iPads, phones etc. We also got the iPad case for it, it is synthetic leather - will stand up, and has a flap covering the screen when not in use. Now, there are quite a few after market covers for them.

Kim - Have a super day yourself!

Dave - Have fun at your Thanksgiving get-together!

Eva - The Turkey Trot does not need to be done on Thanksgiving day (we are doing so because it is the best weather forecast for the week), so if you can do it today or Fri, or even over the weekend, I am sure that would be fine. When we were house shopping, one of my priorities was having a door from the bedroom to the backyard, so I do not have to go too far to let dogs out. If we did not have that, I would probably have put in a dog door that they would have access to at all hours.

Mike - Glad you got to sleep!

Tandy - Grasshopper pie sounds great. I hear you about out of control eating - I also am addicted to sugar, and need to cut down on it.

Elizabeth - Sorry to hear your friend had to pull out of the Princess.

Sue - Hopefully we will get out to our Christmas parade next Sat - will depend upon weather.

Rick - Good luck on your races!

AFM - I started to respond yesterday, then we decided to get out for bike ride while there was no wind - so dropped everything and got ready for ride. Of course, wind picked up while we were out - we guessed it to be around 20mph as it pushed our bikes when in the cross wind, so we ended up going only 6.8 miles. Today we did our “Turkey Trot Tri - 12 miles on the bike (yes, the wind which was 0 when we started, was 15 to 25 by the time we got back - I swear the weather gods look down on us and say - oh, Scott and Lynn are headed out for a bike ride - lets turn on the wind!) then 1.27 miles walking with the dogs, then “swimming” in the hot tub (unknown miles). Now to cook dinner and watch the Macy’s Parade which we taped.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Happy Thanksgiving Team! I hope everyone is enjoying the day.

Vicky, What do you want to use the iPad or eReader for?
If it's to read books. I would look at an eReader.
I have the Kobo. Wanted it to read books on the train. Light and convenient. It's not backlit. Very easy on the eyes as Lynn already mentioned.
I just bought the new KoboVox (WiFi only). I only have a basic cell phone with no apps or email etc. This was a prefect upgrade for me but I wouldn't want to read a book from it. I found it extremely hard on the eyes.
DH has the iPad2 and loves it but wouldn't be using it to read novels.

Rick, Nice race result and new PR.

Lynn, I see you did a mini triathlon today not just a Turkey Trot!

Dave, Hope you had a great race.

.............Sue

Lynn: Yes you did do a mini tri yesterday:thumbsup2

Rick: WTG on your sub 30 min that is awesome:cheer2:

Vicky: Nope I got tickets just for the stay, I don't think we will be back to disney till 2013 so AP's would be a waste. Glad your flight is booked!!! What day are you flying home?

Hi to everyone!!!!!!!

AFM did a good walk on the TM yesterday morning, we hav a super busy weekend and lucky my LSD this week is only 4 miles so will do that first thing tomorrow. Took a rest today to get my weekend housework done this morning since won't be around much on the weekend.

6 Weeks today till the start of the 5K sooooo excited. Oh ya and I finally hit the 20pds lost as of this morning. The weight was not moving but this morning FINALLY. Now to keep trying to lose as much as possible before January.

Have a super Friday all

Kimmer that's awesome that you are shedding those pounds. I do need to start eating better myself, that or get a new scale and see if that makes a difference. I have remained at around the mid 180s and can't seem to make them go away with exercise alone. I don't think I'm eating bad just that the once ravinous metabolism I had seems to have gone to sleep.

Today will be arest day since I had a good week of training so far and yesterday at the race my legs felt tired after the hard 9.5 miler the day before. I'm going to try another 9.5 on Sunday if it isn't raining.

Hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving and ready to kick off the holiday eating season with a new resolution to not overdue. Remember a flat tummy can be prevented.

Dave:hippie:

Kim: Thanks, and big congrats on the weight loss! You are going to be 'lean and mean' for WDW in January!

Dave: You deserve a rest day after all your effort this week. :) Enjoy the day and bring on the "Grrr" for Sunday!

AFM: Today is a rest day but I am tempted to do some swimming this morning while the rest of the family is still sleeping off their food comas. :rotfl: I stepped on the scale today and it showed 'no change' from yesterday's pre-race weight! Stunned and Happy! :woohoo:

Good Morning Team! Happy Black Friday to all!

Kim - Have fun on your busy weekend. Congrats on the weight loss!

Dave - that happens with age - that once ravenous metabolism disappears - :lmao:.

Sue - Yes, a mini tri - :lmao:

Rick - Have fun swimming.

AFM - Got out early for a dog walk, high wind is predicted AGAIN for today - 30-40mph with gusts to 60mph, so far, it is light. We got most of the outside Christmas lights up so we could turn them on last night - still have a few things to put out. We will go out later for some black friday shopping, we do not want to brave the early morning crowds, but do want to take advantage of some of the offerings. Our local bike shop told us the other day that we could get 25% off bikes, even special orders, today, so we will go back and see if they will honor that and order me a new cyclocross bike (they do not have any in my size in stock).

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Lynn: 25% off a bike would be an amazing savings. I hope that works out for you. Your tri sounds like my kind of tri. I don't like the thought of swimming, but could handle doing it in a hot tub! ;)

Dave: I have people ask me all the time why I run so much and it's simple: age has killed my metabolism. And, it's just going to get worse because I'm only 41. I cannot imagine how much I will need to run when I'm 60 or 70. Of course, I could stop eating so much, but what's the fun of that?

Rick: Congrats on the new PR and the lack of weight gain. Awesome. Are you feeling good for tomorrow's race?

Kim:  for 20 pounds!!!! Great job. Do you want to lose much more before marathon weekend?

Sue: So I'm not alone in my non FBing. :thumbsup2 I try to catch up with everyone here, but do miss out on things. No biggie. I finally gave in and set up an account for my 12 year old. He's been on it once in 3 weeks.

Vicky: You will have to give us the recipe for pumpkin mac n cheese. Sounds fantastic. I love pumpkin and sweet potatoes in just about anything. How was your workout? I am thinking of buying a Groupon for a gym. It's 12 sessions of either kickboxing or plyometrics for $25 instead of the regular $150. That's about the only way I could afford it. :)

AFM: We had a very nice, relaxed day yesterday. I ate and ate and ate. We watched football all day and never stepped out of the house. Today, Harrison wanted to go out for Black Friday. But, he wanted to go get in line at 8 last night with all the crazy people. I refused, but was willing to go at 3 or 4 this morning. Instead, we headed out at the normal hour of 7 and only had to deal with half the inconsiderate people we would have encountered. The poor employees were all looking so tired. We got a few decent deals, but nothing spectacular. Frank is done and my nieces are all done. That's about it. I mostly just wanted Harrison to look so he could make a list for Christmas. All he keeps saying is that he wants a laptop. To get the one he would need for gaming, the absolute best deals are around $600ish. Not gonna happen kiddo! So, we need other options.

We aren't running today. Just kind of lazy. We will do our turkey trot tomorrow. Have 3.5 scheduled, but I'm thinking of pushing Harrison to 4 miles and just taking it slow. I know he can do it. Mostly, I just have massive studying to do this weekend. I am not in the mood for decorations yet.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic weekend.

Yeah for Friday!

Kim, Nice job on the weightloss:thumbsup2

Lynn, Did you get a new bike? We bought DD a new bike for Christmas.
Upgrading her to a 21-speed Specialized Hotrocks.

Tandy, Enjoy the studying.

Going to Mary Poppins this evening. Running tomorrow and doing an indoor ride on Sunday.
Have a great weekend everyone and enjoy those training runs.........Sue

Happy Friday team! Just taking a quick break to say hello! Did anyone get any amazing Black Friday deals? I found out this morning that someone stole my credit card number and went shopping at the Apple Store online. Luckily they were dumb and tried buy 5 laptops... of course it didn't go through. It was a PITA cancelling the Apple order though... almost about as bad as being on hold with the airlines

Sue - Have fun at Mary Poppins! Is it hard to hide the bike? I remember I use to turn the house upside looking for presents at Christmas :) I'm excited for the "warm" weather this weekend! I've heard it's going to be 11C tomorrow!

The iPad would be for reading, taking notes and watching movies ... although that's a really distant third. I'd want it mostly for working in the kitchen so I could make notes on my recipes or not have to print out paper. The screen seemed pretty sharp when I was reading off the guy on the train beside me. I may wait until Boxing Day and see if there are any other deals during that time.

Tandy - Gaming systems are insanely expensive! I'll bet you'll need to get a nice sized monitor to go along with it too. Can't you get an xbox or PS3 for about half the price? But the games probably aren't the same.

The training was great! We did a lot of plyo, leg work and then spent the rest of the time working on upper body. I'm really not a fan. He had me do those pushups where you do a pushup, jump into a squat position on your left, then back to the center and then jump to the right and back to the center. Do another pushup and repeat. He calls them suicide pushups. I hate 'em  He did say I was leaning out so I was happy about that!

The Groupon fitness classes sound like a good deal! I know people at work who hop from one gym to another every few months. They go with whatever deal is being offered on Groupon. Does your college have a gym you can use? And don't forget to ask for a student discount, if you stick with the classes outside of school. If you have a student card, they might give you one!

I have the pumpkin mac & cheese recipe at home. I will get it up this weekend. I took someone else's recipe and made a few modifications  The recipe makes a good amount of food - I had enough leftover for two lunches and a dinner.

Good luck with the studying this weekend!

Lynn - Thanks for the iPad feedback! There were a few sales today and I'm looking at a 16G w/WiFi. I'm still humming and hawing over getting one. I feel like it's a lot of money (ok I'm just cheap  ). I saw the covers you were talking about, they were about $45 or $79 for the leather versions (but the leather versions weren't highly reviewed so I'd just go with the plastic ones). The 25% discount on bikes sounds awesome! I hope you're able to get it still.

Rick - That's some post race meal! I guess your speedy pace got your metabolism going!

Dave - Do you snack a lot? That's the one that always gets me. I use to nibble here and there while I was at work. I also use to taste test a lot while cooking and that adds up as well. One tip my physio gave me back in September was to cut out fruit from my diet and replace it with veggies. Not that there's anything wrong with fruit but it does contain sugar and I found it really helped me.

Kim - Congrats on your weight loss! That's fantastic! You're going to be lean and mean in January!! I am staying for a week until Wednesday. I was actually worried about using too many vacation days but come to think of it... I didn't use that many at all in 2011. Oh well, too late to change things around!

AFM - I have my 17 miler tomorrow. I was trying to think of the best way to do it. I briefly thought about running one mile away from my house and then one mile back but that would get really boring done 17 times  So I think I'm going to do 3 laps of my 5 mile route and then a quick 2 miler around the block. I thought about doing the 8 miler once but that's a really hilly route and I just want the mileage, not a challenging 17 mile run :)

I made some cheesecake filled pumpkin muffins yesterday after seeing something similar at Starbucks. I gave one to my dad and he really liked it. I didn't tell him it was pumpkin. He wouldn't have eaten it otherwise!

Oh and I'm down another 0.7 lbs! Yay! My trainer was telling me he noticed I was leaning out. I said there's no way I want to carry any extra weight while doing a marathon. He said he would be sure to step up the workouts but that I'd have to continue eating clean(ish). I still have a cookie now and then and my one cheat day a week. It would probably go faster if I didn't but I'm happy going with about 1 lb/week.

Have a great weekend everyone! :wave2:

No Vicky I don't snack at all. I don't care for sweets. I do eat a lot of food though. I don't eat a lot of bad stuff, just a bit to much to lose. I'm not gaining any, just not losing any.

As long as I keep improving my times and I don't gain any, then I think I'll be fine. I'm sure that extra 25 pounds I could stand to lose would make the long distance events easier if I did lose it.

Dave:hippie:

Vicky: I could talk to you all day about the iPad 2! I have a 64gb 3G white version and it is my primary computing device at this point. I am using it right now in fact. I have an iPhone also but the iPad gets far more use (for non-phone related tasks).

I use the iPad for surfing, email, task management, word processing, photo editing, journaling, blogging, web development, social networking, ebook reader, audiobook & music, watching videos, Netflix, teleconferencing, Skype, gaming, you name it. I use it as much for work as I do for personal stuff.

It is a great tool. There are other good tablets out there so check 'em out before you buy. But for me, I felt that the iPad was a much more mature and flexible device for my needs given the app selection and the installed base of users.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Cheesecake pumpkin muffins sound good! I picked up some cream cheese at the store the other day, maybe will make them this week. (I just use a packaged pumpkin bread mix that has a cheesecake muffin recipe on the side).

Tandy - I actually enjoy swimming, but do not do it much - would have to pay to get into the local pool to do it. The Groupon deal sounds good.

Sue - Yes, we ordered the bike, not quite the 25% off, but still a good discount - about 20%. I should get it when we get back from DL. Hope you enjoyed Mary Poppins, it is one of my favorites.

AFM - Still very windy this morning, so no early walk. We will have to see if the wind dies down a bit before venturing out. At this point, tonights parade does not look good (I do not want to go stand out in the cold and dark if it is also windy). Todays exercise may be in the basement. Or I could count hauling the Christmas boxes upstairs, and the vacuuming and mopping the floors before I start on the Christmas decorations.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Wilbur: Did you like Mary Poppins? I saw the Broadway cast last year and it was phenomenal! I got a chance to participate in an interview of the two leads when they came to Chicago. They are the nicest people!

AFM: I finished my 5K race today with a 30:02 time. Not as fast as my Thursday time, but I still felt good about the run. It was quite windy once again, and started raining at about the 2 mile marker.

The only thing I didn't like about the race was that it was on a bike path that was very narrow, and we had to stay on one side because the 5K and Half Marathoners were sharing the path. It was not optimal, and it made it hard to pass people.

But I finished 181 out of 550 runners with a time that is my second fastest to-date. Can't really argue with that. This was my last race for 2011. I ran for 22 miles this week which is my longest weekly mileage so far. Now it is 'all about Disney' from here on out. Next Saturday will be an 11-mile LR, hopefully with Mike again!

I am totally getting psyched about my soon-to-be-conquered Disney Half! W00t!

Hi Team!

Lynn- LOL it sure does sound like the wind knows when you are headed out for a bike ride and decides to pick up. Do you have one of those swim spas that is made for swimming and is longer and a bit deeper than a regular hot tub? Great job on your Turkey Trot Tri!! Nice to hear most of your lights are up. Hope the Black Friday shopping went well- did you find any good deals? Hauling boxes up and down stairs and cleaning sure sounds like exercise to me!

Sue- Wow, I can’t even imagine raking 100+ bags of leaves! I bet that takes awhile. Glad you had a great run and enjoyed the parade! I would love to run in an area that had lots of Christmas lights up to see in the evening. Hope Mary Poppins was enjoyable.

Vicky- Good idea to keep old running shoes in your trunk. I can’t believe the delivery guy yelled at you! What happened to customer service? I don’t blame you for sending the order back. Yes, pumpkin is good stuff. I love it! Can I have your cheesecake filled pumpkin muffin recipe? How was your 17 mile run? I hope it went well! Congrats on your weight loss too!

Tandy- What’s grasshopper pie? Sounds interesting! The 14 mile run wouldn’t have been so rough if the rain hadn’t been constant and the wind never ending. But, I think it was good for my confidence so I’m glad we did it. I felt like we needed to run in the rain because all it does is rain here and I need to be doing outside runs in order to be ready for Goofy, so that means running in whatever the weather is (not all the time, but sometimes). It’s hard to watch weight once the holiday season sets in and we have goodies to eat everywhere. Besides, I’m sure you’ll need that extra food for your ultra training right? Good luck on your clean eating! Glad to hear your Black Friday shopping wasn’t too bad.

Eva- Thanks! I hope your thyroid med adjustment is working well!

Rick- Congrats on your PR in your Turkey Trot! That’s awesome! And congrats on your 5k today! Glad you felt good about your finish are excited for Disney!

Kim- Glad you had a good walk on the TM. Hope your 4 miles went well today! Congrats on the 20 lbs lost!! That is great news!!

Dave- Good luck on your 9.5 miles tomorrow and I hope it doesn’t rain on you.

AFM, we ran our Turkey Trot on Thursday. We ran 5 miles. We lucked out and DH was able to come home early instead of having to work through Thanksgiving like we thought he would so he came home about 9:30am. I was so happy to have him home for a Thanksgiving! We still celebrated on Friday though because by the time he came home I would have already been behind in cooking our dinner. Today we ran 9 miles and it was a beautiful day. It was in the 50’s and we had no rain.

I hope everyone else had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and training is going well!

I did the 9.5 miler yesterday morning instead of today. I've decided that I need to incorperate that distance into my weekly routine since it leaves me very tired. I have been regularly doing a 6.5 miler but it appears that my body needs that extra 3 miles tacked on. Like lifting weights you have to keep increasing to get stronger.

Have a great Sunday y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Hiya Everyone!

I got my TT done yesterday with the Lifetime Fitness run club. I timed a 5k with a pace of 9:08 and a time of 28:18. It was actually my first official run with the club. I did six miles total, stopping after the 5k to wait for Liz to catch up. On the way back I stuck with part of the group and hit a 8:22 pace for awhile. This was all done after working all night and when I finally went to bed around 10:30 am, I slept 14 hours!

Regina~ I'm glad you and Kyle got to have a nice Thanksgiving!

Dave~ Glad to hear how well your training is going this year! You will be a force during the Goof!

Rick~ I'm planning on joining you for our Saturday run. Are you sure you will be up for it after a long night of acting like a Klingon?

Vicky~ Maybe I missed it, being on and off here so much, but did you post any payment info for our TT medals? I don't want to leave you hanging...

AFM~ Liz and I had a nice Thanksgiving, and the run club's TT at the gym raised $2100, and got 1500 pounds of food donated, and had a nice increase in the number of runners. I got put at a busy intersection and had one car blow by me, not wanting to wait for the runners. After seeing what can happen, I will now be sure to thank any volunteers I see at races. It can get crazy out there!

Getting excited about WDW as things get closer. I booked the Steam Train tour, to have something neat to do during my solo stay. I can't believe how fast November went, and hope I get some better training during the next month. I still want to pick up some cross country skis and give it a whirl!

This Friday, we are going to see Rick (Runrookie Rick) get dressed up as a Klingon and perform in the Klingon Christmas Carol in Chicago. It looks to be a good time!

Hope everyone is doing well, Mike :cool2:

Mike: I am so glad you are going to see me in all my Klingon glory on Friday! It will certainly give us something to laugh about during our Long Run the following morning! :rotfl: I am glad you had a good run with the Run Club; I need to start running with them too, especially since I can now run a long enough distance to complete their runs. Although I am not going to be running 8-minute miles any time soon...

AFM: Next week will be a full one. I have strength training on Monday and Wednesday, and runs on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I should rack up 19 miles for the week.

Friday night I get to be a Klingon (from Star Trek lore) in a production of "A Klingon Christmas Carol" in Chicago. It is a cameo role in one scene of the show and I am pretty excited about it! The show is excellent -- an adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic for the Klingon culture and language (the entire show is done in 'tlhingan Hol', the Klingon language).
