Hairdryers...

If you call them that! They really aren't that great - They literally blow air everywhere! I believe Barb has a picture of one on her web-site www.castawayclub.com

We always bring our own -

The bathroom has a hair dryer that is built into the wall. While the typical hair dryer purchased from Wal-Mart today is usually around 1500 to 1800 watts, the on-board hair dryer is only 900 watts.

I always get a hair cut just before a cruise, and they are enough for my short hair.

It was not super powerful but it worked well enough for me to not bother packing one of my own....

I brought my own and I was glad I did. I have long straight hair and that dryer would have just frizzed up my hair. I have to use a diffuser, plus it's not very powerful and my hair is thick, it would have taken forever for my hair to dry.

I have to use a diffuser

As a note for those who have not been on DCL, you can't bring your own diffuser either. Most hair dryers I see at Wal-Mart are shaped like a gun where you put a diffuser on the end of the barrel. But the on-board hair dryers are pretty much just a flexable hose with something like a vacume-cleaner attatchement at the end. You hold this attatchement in your hand and air blows out the side through a rectangular hole, not out of a round hole at the end.

The thing I'd like to know is if anyone has ever thrown a circuit breaker in their room from using their own hair dryer?

I don't know what the limits are on the circuits on the DCL, but I know these modern hair dryers are claiming as much as 1900 watts. On a 120 volt circuit, that means that these hair dryers can try to pull as much as 15.8 amps of current. But most home circuit breakers are only 15 amps, and I know that we occationally trip a circuit breaker in our bathroom if we have all the lights and fans on and use the hair dryer.

I also remember that the outlet that is in the bathroom specifically says that it is for low power equipment (shavers) only. I assume that means that everyone bringing their own hair dryers are using them at the vanity and not in the bathroom.

My hair is a few inches past my shoulders, straight and medium thickness. I found the hairdryer in our room to be good enough for me. Sure it took a few more minutes (maybe 2 or 3) than my own but not enough to justify packing my own. Don't waste precious packing space.

While I'm on the subject...There were 2 adults and 2 children in our room and we never used the over the door shoe organizer that everyone recommended. There are four shelves in the bathroom (we had a split bathroom) and everyone was able to have theri own to house their tolietries and such. There was also a glass shelf right above the sink. I was truely amazed at the space. And as a reminder, don't forget that the beds lift up so that you can store suitcases (or life vests in our case, because our suitcases were too large to fit under the bed, we put life vest under there and suitcases on the top shelf of the closet). There we alot of things that I packed and never used but I am one of those "what if" packers. I was prepared for any and everything!

Hope this helps.

For us, the over-the-door shoe holder was a life saver because we had a "standard" room for our last trip.

We quickly noticed the loss of storage space compared to the delux rooms like CRenze was talking about. The standard rooms loose the storage trunk (the one turned on its side with shelves inside) and the counter-top/shelf unit next to the closet. And I didn't realize it until CRenze post, but those four shelves in the bathroom are also not present in a standard room.

So for us, the shoe holder was very much appreciated. And it wasn't toiletries that we kept in the shoe holder. We kept the first aid kit, our glasses, the camera, under-water camera, combs and brushes, walets, medical supplies (an infant inhailer mask), extra batteries, and other misc. nick-naks you talk with you on these trips that we otherwise could have placed in the "missing" drawers.
