When I color my hair (from a box ;) ) the color gets to my roots and about a quarter of the way down my hair but the bottom doesn't look like the color "took". I am leaving it on the correct amount of time but should I leave it on longer? I don't want to fry my hair either.

HELP!!!

I would leave it on about 5-7 minutes longer - I don't think you will fry your hair with the box color, I don't think there is that much amonia (sp) or whatever that smell is, in there.

If you're using semi permanent or anything not permanent, the out of the box color may be too light to cover the ends.
What color are you using and what color are your ends?

Weird, I have the exact opposite problem! The bottom part of my hair (basically everything that would be in a ponytail) soaks up color like a sponge, but the roots and top of my head are stubborn!

I never thought of that. I have dark hair and was going lighter...

This is also my problem.

To the OP- try using a good clarifying shampoo, before coloring. It will take out the buildup of product- Color might take more evenly, and true to the color you want.

If your ends are already colored, almost no lighter color will lift the dark out. The roots are changing because it is new hair and close to the head, so it has heat. If you really want to go lighter, and your hair is already colored darker than you want, you'll have to lighten them with bleach then re color. I wouldn't suggest doing that at home, though.

You almost have to put the color on your top half of your head first, then for the last 10 put it on your ends to refresh the color.
If there's any white in your hair, sometimes that will not cover.

Alright - I told you before STOP using the box! ! ! ! !

Lemme see if I still have that *PM I SENT YOU REGARDING HAIR COLOR AND PROCESSING!!!!* ......(tapping foot)

-dont play dumb I know I sent it!-

And, as I suspected, I found it:

Alright - Im not familiar with what color Clairols Natural Light Golden Brown 116A is.

Ummmm - lets do the super simple explanation - but it will involve you going to a beauty supply store (Like Sally's)

***Alright - if you have natural red in your hair (most people do) and you want it to remain "golden" or "warm" but -not- red, you need to use a neutral, or even an ash. The color on the swatch will look dull, but this will not be the color you end up with, as youve got red in your hair.

*** Hair color lift depends on the peroxide you use. Generally if you are lifting more than 4 levels, you dont want to do that at home. But it sounds like youre not lifting THAT much. THAT much woudl bring most people to blonde.

*** Keeping the above in mind - you choose a peroxide based on the lift level you need. 10 volume is 1 life (or none)
20 volume is 2 levels
30 volume is 3 levels
40 volume is 4 levels

So, if I were to simply guess.... Id assume youre probably at like a level 3-4 naturally (see picture, 1 is at the bottom - 10 is at the top) And remember - this is just a "base" not taking into account red or ash in hair:

Soooo - you wanna be at maybe a level 6-7-ish? But warm/gold?

Again - if Im right with what Im guessing - You need to find a neutral level 6/7 .... do NOT get a red, or a gold, or a warm...youll be too red.

So - Neutral Level 6 or 7 (see how light you want it)
With equal parts of a 30 volume peroxide.... I'd leave it on probably 20 - 25 minutes. Just watch your color, and see how it's lifting. Just watch your lift - not the color - you should be "lifted" 3 levels, or so.

You should be doing your ends FIRST, and getting your roots LAST, as they generally will lift quicker than the rest of your head (from head-heat)

I told you NO MORE BOX COLOR!

 I am sorry. Ok, ash it is. Now what is the time amount I should do on my ends and then roots? If I usually do 25-30 minutes overall, then to me roots would be longer, am I right? See the problem is is that we don't have a Sally Beauty Supply here so I have to use the box.

Save yourself the trouble, go to a hair color specialist and get it done. Much much better results.
