Hairbraiding question...

My girls have had it done twice on the Wonder 4 day. We are now off to a 7 day and it is the first thing the girls want to do. It did hurt both of them...we had it done late a t night and them gave them advil and sent them to bed. By morning they were both fine. Because they did them so tight, they stayed in for 10 weeks!! It was a great way to help grow out bangs.princess:

Opppps....

ps: Don't forget suntan lotion after the braids are done.....that part of the head has never seen the sun and I have seen some terrible sunburns....there is some sprays for bald people that work great if you can find it....

My girls had their hair braided at CC. My older DD was on a RCI cruise last February and had hers done in Nassau. While she did not have any problems, several others did with lice.

On the 7 day Western Magic, the sign-ups are Thursday morning, at the store which caters more to children (sorry, can't remember the name, Mickey's ________??).

When you talk about braids on the ship/etc- you are talking about real braids- not the hair wraps like at WDW, right?

Just wondering what to expect. My oldest daughter got a hair wrap done at WDW and it was done great/tight and lasted weeks- in fact it was still super tight when I finally had to take it out about a week after we got back because I could tell it was not loosening up and a few hairs were breaking off- I was afraid if I didn't take it out that the entire hairwrapped hair section would break off! And she had this done near her bangs on one side from where her long hair parts behind the bangs all the way down one side... longer hair, not short bangs- it would have shown quite a bit... and taken a long time to grow back to that length! It was REALLY hard to get that wrap out... I hope it's braids on the ship- because I know she's going to ask to have it done and I'd rather not get another hair wrap done...

BBB - it is definitely braids (i.e., cornrows like Bo Derek in "10" -- rememger her? The girls can either have them done to the crown of the head, or all the way down. My daughters both chose to have them done to the crown, and then to have those cornrows braided, but did not include any of the remaining hair down the back of the head, so they were loose braids hanging down over the rest of their hair, with beads attached. It was really cute! My DD-13 is taking hers out tomorrow - she has done a good job shampooing her hair without dislodging the braids, and looks really cute!

I didn't see anyone doing hair wraps during the cruise - not on board, in port, or at CC. The women who do the braiding at CC are from Abaco, an island about 10 miles away from CC.

Hairwraps are only done in the Disney resorts. I only saw braiding in the Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Thomas & Cozumel. My DD has had her hair corn rowed at least 10 times in the last few years- both full head & crown w/ braids ( waist long hair ). In our opinion, the braiders on the ship have done the best job & they stayed in for about 4 weeks, with proper care. Here are some tips we have learned along the way for safe braiding, care & feeding ( so to speak...)

If you have it done on the ship, get in line early for sign ups, as the sea days go quick. Don't waste time on CC getting hair done. They use a clean comb for each person & they use the good rubber bands that don't break the hair. They put the beads on properly & don't use foil, which fries the ends. They are pretty gentle compared to some on the various islands...

If you choose to have hair braids done on any of the islands, ask to see their book first. Some of them are terrible. Ask if they use foil- don't do it, or you are looking at at least a 2 to 3 inch trim when you take them out to get the damaged ends off. They dont last long either. My DD's friend got hers done in St. Thomas- full head. Started coming out by Friday, CC day & her ends were totally fried from the foil. Her Mom emailed after the cruise to say her DD had to have a major haircut to get rid of the damage...The braiders at Mr. Sanchos in Coz & Orient Point are pretty good. Watch out for St. Thomas & downtown Phillipsburg-bad. There were some awesome braiders in the Freeport straw market, but I don't think DCL goes there any more.

If you choose to go non DCL route- bring your own rat tail comb, brush & rubber bands. The good tiny ones are made by goody & are vinyl- come in clear/black/brown- about a $1.50 in target. They don't break the hair. We brought our own pony beads too. When you see how some store them & how dirty things are you will be glad you brought your own... I'm a clean freak when it come to that stuff. I don't think I could deal with lice...

To maintain braids so they don't get fuzzy, spray Paul Mitchell Heat & Seal -$8, before bed only on the braids& tie a bandana around the braids tightly before retiring. This helps maintain the "new" look.

For sunscreen use Redken Spray Sun Shield for hair- $9. Spray generously on scalp area exposed from braids. It works great & washes out better than sunscreen. Great for highlighted/color treated hair too. My highlights get too light in the Caribbean sun, so this stuff helps me not to get that white, strawlike, streaky look. It's a little greasy, but on the beach, who cares... My stylist suggested it & it's worth the money. If you can't find it, use a Qtip & apply sunscreen in between rows. The hair will become fuzzier faster, as you do have to scrub a little to remove suncreen when shampooing.

When removing, cut bands first. Work the braid with a rat tail comb. Don't be alarmed if you seeing a lot of loose hair coming out. Your child is not going bald... It's all the hair you would normally lose daily that couldn't escape... After you're done- (takes us about an hour) wet head & SLATHER deep conditioner on. Put on a shower cap & wait about an hour. It helps to restore hair to normal condition. As I said my DD has thick, waist long hair & she doesn't sustain any damage other than a few split ends. I usually trim an inch to clean it up after she deep conditions.

If your child is sensitive, or really young- the braids will hurt while they are doing them. Let them know ahead of time, so they can know what to expect. Most little girls want them, so they'll endure the pain & be brave. The finished product looks so nice.

Hope this helps!

Dianthus,

For those of you going on the 3 or 4 night, there isn't (last I heard) hairbraiding on the ship. My DD got her hair braided in Nassau, since we didn't want to wait to Castaway Cay, and I took my own combination comb/pick and made sure the lady used that. She didn't seem to mind. I'm sure she realized that if she didn't she would lose the business.

We were on the 3 day Wonder in December and there was hairbraiding on the ship.

My daughter had her whole head braided in Nassau. The going price was $85.00 but we got it for $40.00. I didn't know until after it was done how much it hurt. My DD11 just sat there like an angel and never said a peep. She told me afterwards how much it hurt.

This may not be much help, but last summer at Wilderness Lodge they offered a sort-of halfway option: a removable hair wrap thing. It looked like a hair wrap, but it had a clip at the top. The girl can clip it to a long skinny braid. I thought these were a great idea: they'd last forever (okay, maybe not forever), and they'd be removable for hair washing. Plus, the girl could just choose her colors and go -- no sitting still while the wrap is made. I believe they were in the $20 range.

I've seen hair wraps at lots of resorts (Disney and non-Disney), but I"ve never seen this particular thing anywhere else.

What about doing it before the actual cruise? Seems like it would be tons cheaper and then that time could be spent enjoying the trip. I've had my girls' done a few times and it doesn't look that hard to do and since you can get the beads, etc. at a local CVS or something it's a doable option. Just a thought...:)

I asked about this a couple of months ago but there wasn't much feedback because nobody really knew. My DD11 would love to get her hair braided but selfishly I am reluctant to take any time out of our days to get it done on the ship or islands. Obviously I will if there are no alternatives but.....

Since we are arriving in Cocoa Beach the day before the cruise, I was wondering if anyone know of a place that does this. I have started calling hair salons but coming from Canada, it is running up the phone bill and after 8 calls, NOBODY does it.

You'd think there'd be a market for this in that area

We though of getting it done before we leave but she doesn't want the kids at school to see it until she gets back and we are leaving right after school.

We did our third Magic cruise this last December and this time we chose to have the girls hair braided before we left. It made a huge difference! Figure at least an hour for each child, that's time missed having fun on the boat. Most hair salons have at least one staff member who braids. Our worst experience was in St. Maarten in 2002. The police kept coming and chasing off the hair braiders. They'd go and hide and then show back up and start working again. The whole process took almost 4 hours! What a pain! Then they tried to get us to pay them $80 per child. We stuck to the $30 originally agreed upon and FINALLY got to go relax in the sand and have a (much needed) drink.

Sandy~

Get it done on the ship. Get in line early & Choose a sea day if you're on the 7 day. About an hour for corn rows & braids sounds right. They do a good job!

St. Martin - Orient beach braiders were good. The Philipsburg bunch are gross! I would skip St. Martin for braiding too. What a bad experience you had cindyluwho!

Our 7yr. old DD had her hair braided at Castaway Cay, it took 2 hrs and she did very well , not a tear. That was until we got the bill!! since she had her whole head done it was 64 dollars. but it is what she wanted and the ladies there we great and things were clean. It lasted two weeks beware the removal ! it took as long to remove.

We didn't sign up soon enough on the ship, that is why we did it on the island (cornrows 2 dollars/ braids 1 dollar).

Enjoy!!
