So, I'm trying to grow out my hair...much to my mothers dismay who thinks that just b/c I'm 30 I should have it short. :P
Whatever, anyway. I have curly hair that is shoulder length. It is naturally curly and I'm working on growing out the highlights. Luckily, I'm still waiting on an engagement ring...but a 2010 wedding looks more than hopeful...Which is good b/c I'll have time to grow out the color and hopefully get a little more length.

So, How do I do this? It seems like if I let it get too long the ends all split and it separates in the back. How do I get the length and have it look decent?
Any ideas. Right now, if I were to wear it all up the way I want it tiara and all...I'd have those pesky tendrills down the back that I am not a fan of. (JMO...on me they just tickle)

Thanks for the help!
Petals.

Petals, I'm sure your mom means well, but just because you're 30 doesn't mean you should cut your hair short. I'm 39 and my husband will freak if I decided to cut my hair short! It's 2008 - 50 is the new 20 I've heard :goodvibes

I have curly hair, but I have a perm. I use Deva Curl products which are awesome and I also don't dry my hair with a towel, I use a big T-shirt which minimizes the frizzies. My stylist keeps longer layers in my hair. Where do you live? My stylist went to the Deva salon in Manhattan where they give classes on how to cut & style curly hair. Maybe there's someone in your area that deals with curly hair and they can put you on the right path.

Good lucK!

Thanks for the insight! I never thought about drying my hair with a t-shirt...it makes a lot of sense really. I'm Upstate. I wonder if I could find someone that deals with curly hair.

I wish my mother understood that 50 is the new 20. She doesn't get it really. Oh well.

Off to google Deva curl.
Thanks!

It's a mom thing to give you instructions like that. If you cut your hair, she'd just have to tell you to eat your peas or something, so you might as well stick with growing out your hair...;)

Reach out to Lynn5700. Sh eis a haridresser and may have some good reccomendations for ya!

I am almost 30 and I am not going ot chop off my hair cause I am "old" lol

I agree with thatdisneygirl. She is just being momish lol

And take every minute of it you can get no matter how annoying it may be. I lost my mom 3 years ago next week and miss her every day, even all the annoying nagging motherly behavior.

Good luck!

I second the suggestion to find Lynn. She had beautiful hair at her wedding and is also a hairdresser - excellent combo! :goodvibes

Hi! When growing your hair out I tell my clients to just get a tiny trim, not even an inch every 2-3 months..just to keep the ends looking fresh. You have plenty of time to grow it and also to get rid of the Highlights quickly you can go to your hair stylist and ask him or her to color over the hls with a color that is your natural color to blend in everything so it doesn't look like you have ten inches of regrowth.

Very true...However, she knows I won't eat my veggies-maybe that is why she picks on my hair! :rotfl:

I'm sorry you lost your mom. :sad1: I'll accept mine being mom-ish...Even if she drives me nuts. I just don't like to fight with her. I told her she was nagging and she got all weird on me.

Thanks for the insight. My mother (who used to be a hairdresser) told me that my hair doesn't grow and look good past my shoulders. Um...that might have worked when I was 5-but I have to tell you that silly face I made when I was 5 didn't stay frozen on my face. I have plenty of pictures when it was past my shoulders where it looked just fine.
Luckily, the highlights kind of work-even with the regrowth. I'm going to school full time and not working a ton right now. So, I'll have to deal with that until I just can't stand it anymore and have a little extra $$$ which is ok...b/c I put all of my extra change and money into my Disney Wedding Bank. (It's a water bottle that goes on top of a water cooler that I decorated...maybe I should post a pic... )

Thanks Girls!

I agree with Lynn -- if you get a non-length-threatening trim every couple weeks, you'll keep the freshness without compromising the length you're trying to grow...

On the Style channel, they have those reality hair shows - they said the same thing - like half an inch off every 2-3 months.
