I went to the salon today to dye my hair, and asked to go blonde on the advice of my future sister in law (I was teetering between blonde and red, she thought blonde would look good). The blonde I was looking at was similar to one that I have had before and looked good. Unfortunately, that's not how it turned out. I was going for a darker, more golden blonde, and instead ended up pretty close to platinum. Now, hair is just hair to me. I like my hair and play with it, but I always say that if something doesn't turn out right, it's easy to fix.

Normally I would just deal with it until it was time to color it again (a month or two). The problem is that I will have engagement photos taken in the next couple of weeks and I don't think it looks that good. I will talk to the salon to see what they can do, but I was wondering if anybody who has been in a similar boat can give me some tips. I'm not interested in frying my hair and I'm afraid it may have been overprocessed already tonight. Thanks for the help!

As you can see, not the best look for me!

I think it looks nice! It probably feels weird to you because you're not used to it.

I have brown hair and went platinum once -- I just could never get comfortable with it, but I got a ton of compliments -- and oddly enough, a lot of attention from men. (I wasn't expecting that for some reason!) I eventually went back to brown, but I wish I'd enjoyed platinum more while I had it.

I think with a nice, shiny berry lip gloss and the right eye makeup to complement blonde hair, you'll take some excellent photos. I think the blonde looks great with your eye color. Maybe you could get your makeup done professionally the day of the photos, as they'll know what goes best with your hair color and eye color.

Congratulations on the engagement!!! :)

Actually, I think it looks SUPER!
What they could have done was lighten your eyebrows a drop :confused3 so the contrast was not as sharp. Thats a easy fix though. Perhaps that would be better than trying to change the color again. I think you look like an actual blonde and not too many can actually do that.
Again, I think you look Beautiful and I am sure your future Hubby will love it!
Congrats by the way! Hope you feel better about it after getting used to your change! :wizard:

Personally, I'm not a fan of light blonde on anyone over the age of 17. Two of my dd's have platinum blonde hair, as I did until college, and I always joke to my colorist to give me their color, but honestly, I prefer highlights, with some lowlights also. It just looks more natural. It costs more upfront, but lasts longer (I get it done three times a year).

If you keep it, definitely get the brows died and waxed.

Agreed! Your hair looks excellent with your skin tone. Eyebrows should be about two steps darker than your hair (or maybe 3 or 4 steps to avoid looking washed out). Go to a MAC counter, have them conceal your eyebrows, and use different shades of brow powder to see what looks good on you. Once you know what color eyebrows match your hair, you can bleach them at home with Jolen facial hair bleach. It's about $5 at any drugstore, and it works great!

go to Walmart and buy a bottle of Pink Lotion light. put just a dab in the palm of your hand and rub it in your hands real good, then rub it into your hair while it is still wet and then blow dry, this will prevent and damage and give it moisture if it has been over processed.

I don't think it looks bad at all. It is a lot to get used to though. I agree with a pp about changing your makeup. You need more color. Not a lot, but more. I hope some of the hair stylists on this board sees your post. They are a lot of help. Buckalew (? sp) and CathrynRose are a lot of help.

It could be a simple matter of having a stylist apply toner for a short while. I don't know, but it might not take much to get it to the golden blond you wanted.

Make sure you use shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. Good luck with it. Just know it doesn't look bad. We are our worst critic!

If this is not your natural hair color, and not one that you see yourself maintaining, then having your engagement photos taken with the color will be odd, won't it? Looking back over the years, do you want to see yourself with this color? If so, don't worry about it and keep it. If not, do something about it.

You can ask for low lights. That would put some depth of color and tone down the platinum tone.

Or, bite the bullet and have your hair returned to it's natural color, and be sure to have a full service restorative treatment done to it, too.

Agree with PP, go get some lowlights if you want to darken it up. When I did color my hair, I would have hi & low lights put in. I am not a stylist so I don't know if it will dry out your hair. Ask them about that.

Right now I am not coloring my hair. I don't have grey so I am enjoying it. Eventually I will have to go back to coloring it but I will have dark blonde put it. My platinum days are over.;)

I a vetran with blonde hair dye. I started losing my blonde in college and began artifically putting it back because I just couldn't see myself with dark hair. I agree that it is a touch too light for you. I would go back and have some lowlights put in to give the color some depth. Ideally enough so that the color you have now would be the highlight color rather than the base color. I would also get your brows lightened to be a couple shades darker than the darkest lowlight color. A change in makeup will also help you not look washed out with the lighter color.

I actually like it. That's not what I think of when I think "platinum". If you don't like it, add the lowlights like others have suggested or how about putting off your engagement photos for another month or so? I also kind of like the contrast between the darker brows and lighter hair.

Agree. It's not the hair that's the problem - it's the eyebrows. I can't believe they didn't offer to do it at the time of service.

Have the eyebrows done and reassess. Then you can decide if you really need the lowlights or not.

I think that your colorist could add some lowlights or an allover color in a slightly deeper warm tone (like a deeper, golden honey with maybe some reddish tones) without damaging your hair. Taking hair lighter (bleaching) is harsh, but adding color back isn't so bad. I do think a deeper color would suit your skintone nicely.

And the contrast with the eyebrows is a little harsh, like the others have pointed out. Lightening them a bit would help, as would having them waxed/shaped by the salon. If they were shaped by the waxing, you might not need to get them lightened- the color contrast can look really cool.

You have a really cute face and smile- I know your photos will turn out great!!!

Thanks for the advice! I might see about doing the lowlights, as well as lightening the brows. I was only trying to go a shade or two lighter than it had been so it would like nice for the photos, but the girl took it way too light. I'm not wearing make up in the photo, I very rarely wear it because I work outdoors and would sweat it off within half an hour. I could try some gloss like a pp suggested. That probably wouldn't end up looking too bad after all day in the park.

I agree with PPs. Go back to the salon to have it fixed to something you like. Probably have your brows lightened and/or waxed so they're not so severe against the hair color. And I def agree with going to the MAC counter to get makeup that complements the new hair and your skin tone. Esp. for engagement pics. Every time I color my hair, I stop by there to make sure I have makeup that 'goes'.

p.s. - for minimal makeup for outdoors, also look into waterproof mascara. For vacations, outdoors days, beach days - it and lipgloss are the only things I wear. Small things that can have a big impact for me on looking put together.

Colorist here. When you are fair skinned and have blue, green eyes you use a cool color. I see it is brassy at the roots. I would go back and ask for lowlites and you need a toner. They should have never used a warm tone with your complextion.

Maybe try a violet shampoo - I'm a fan of Joico's. My hair is always super bright after I get my highlights done and it fades a little after a week or so. The violet shampoo helps tone it done and fight brassiness.

They did give me a purple shampoo and I am going to be using it tonight.
