Hello. I need to seriously dye my hair. I have stubborn grays. My hair is to my mid back and thick. Las time I went and got a good color at a salon was 8 years ago and it was $90(just for hair color no blow drying or style). A few years ago I found another hair place but he's the owner and he over books so clients have to wait a longtime but he only charges $45 but I never get compliments on my hair color like I have in the past with hair dye from the store. I use to use John Freda mousse dye . I just cant find it in the stores anymore. What brand do you all recommend? My hair is brown with natural gold highlights especially from ear down so people usually think I did an ombre dye job but I didn't. I would like a nice brownish color

BTW I have allergies so something not to strong otherwise I get a headache and my sinus act up and something in a box I don't want to use the ones from sallys where you needs to mix stuff up. TIA!

I use Colorsilk. There is no ammonia and it is cheap. It eventually starts to wash out so I do it every 6 weeks.

Try Madison Reed, it is definitely more expensive but the colors on their website are very true to what I have received. I have gotten more compliments using that brand than even the salon color. You don't have to sign up for auto ship to try it. I have very sensitive skin and this brand is excellent for that.

I'll have to try it in the future. Right now I'm looking for something I can buy at Walmart or target to do this weekend

I went to Target , which I hardly go to but I found 2 boxes of the color(dark brown chocolate) I wanted. One box was opened but luckily everything was in it. I will have to hit up every Target and stock up on it-lol!
$11.97 a box and I had a free $5 gift card and a $25 bday gift card.

Ha anyone used the john Freda foam dark brown chocolate or the dark cool expresso let me know

I like Garnier, although my hairdresser said if I have to do it myself...she would recommend Clariol. It only lasts less than 3 weeks and that is using shampoo for colored hair, I think I will go back to Garnier although it does have ammonia.

How long does the Garnier last?

I use Natural Instincts because it is a semi-permanent. The grey coverage fades in about six weeks for me, but I only shampoo twice a week.

I'm trying to grow out all of my permanent color to see what I'm actually working with.

Seconding this. I hate sitting at the salon for 2 plus hours to get my hair done. I decided to try Madison Reed and it's so great. My hair is so much healthier than when I was going to the salon.

For something from a physical store, I liked the Féria line. I'm a redhead though and reds are a bit trickier than browns.

I refuse to pay as much as salons want, plus, with two kids, I just don't have the time.

Clairol Perfect 10 works AWESOME and lasted a long time for me, but I've also liked Clairol Natural Instincts. Both are foolproof. That's what I have now. It's my last time though! I'm only 36, but I have so much silver coming in, I'm going to see if I can just grow it out. It actually looks pretty, so I'm excited. Even though I don't dye but a few times a year, I've got a pretty good sensitivity going on from the PPD, and don't want to get a full blown allergy.

I used to dye my moms hair who had very stubborn grays and we used Colorsilk from Sally's.

I've been using Madison Reed and I get compliments all the time on the shininess of my hair. I have short hair,so I use half at a time, and since it's dark, I dye every 2-3 weeks to cover the greys. It smells nice while using it,doesn't burn, and the color lasts better than the boxes I've gotten at the drugstore. It really is nicer stuff all around. I hate that it's more expensive, but it's kind of worth it. When I use drugstore any brand, I get greys showing through within a day or so. With MR, it covers for a couple of weeks.
