Hair Curlers Out In Public

I use huge Velcro rollers after I blow dry my hair. It gives volume and makes it really smooth. It almost straightens it for me- doesn't curl it at all. Anyway, I always drive with them in my hair, and take them out just as I pull in the parking lot at work. I look like a total weirdo with them in. They're enormous.
One day a fellow teacher was yelling my name from way, way across the parking lot. I thought to myself, that's so rude! Why wouldn't she just talk to me when we're both inside the building?
Yep, I left one roller in the back of my head. She was trying to spare me any embarrassment. :o

You don't see it anymore, but I remember it when I was little. My mom would have died than wear rollers out. I never wore rollers.

when I was a teenager I did competitive Irish Dancing, just like Riverdance and Lord of The Dance, except instead of a show it was 3 dancers on the stage at a time competing against each other. Anyway just like in Riverdance and Lord of The Dance all the girls had long curly hair. The competitions would be every Saturday and it was a ritual on Friday nights to get your hair done in curlers. The curlers would only be taken out about an hour before you went onstage, so it was quiet normal to see girls between 8 and 17 years old out and about on Saturdays going to dancing competitions with their hair in curlers.

In the last 10 years wigs have become more common as they are alot more practical, but depending on where you are you will still see girls with curlers out and about on their way to dance competitions.

My mom, back in the early 70s, would occasionally wear curlers out covered with a bandanna. Then we got the hot rollers. God I hated them. They were, not surprisingly, hot. My Mom, God rest her soul, used to torture me with them, burning the tips of my ears or my scalp when setting my hair for some occasion. I used to be so jealous of my sister's naturally wavy hair, because she never got the hot rollers.

No opinion on this as I'm a guy, but I loved that commercial. Reminds me of my childhood watching TV. Can you believe TV ads were once a minute long? I seem to see a lot of those old hot curlers sets at rummage sales.

I never have. I used to use the bendable rod curlers. I can't imagine wearing those out in public.

Never ever did that nor would I. We were taught it was totally inappropriate (not that I bother to use curlers anyway).

LOL, I drive with hot curlers and take them out at parking lot too and that's one of my fear too.
So if you do this, do you brush out and spray your hair in the car? Isn't that hard sitting down and only having such a small mirror to work with? I wouldn't be able to make that work.

I use hot rollers almost every workday on my hair. They aren't bendable ones, just regular hot rollers. I only have to leave them in about 10 minutes. I've never considered wearing them out of the house and I'm sure I wouldn't even if I had to leave them in much longers.

I was also a member of the rag curl club...ouch! My mother would also set my hair with those pink plastic curler rods that came with permanent kits; I had to hand her each tissue paper square, and it took forever. My hair was so thick the plastic rods would frequently snap in half. I would have to wear a scarf around my head to prevent the curlers from falling out overnight, and they would dig into my head; not really sure how I survived. If a couple of rods fell out in my sleep it would throw my whole head off, because there would be thick straight strands of hair hanging below the curls. Talk about a bad hair day.

I forget how do you use those bendable rollers? Do you have to use them on wet hair?

It's been forever since I had them. But I believe my hair was dry. I wish I could recall the name of them, it was in the 80'a and you put them in a bag and plugged it in. The rods were bendable like a pipe cleaner but harder.

I also had the ones in the 90's, Caruso curlers? And a crimp iron, lol

I just pull them out, give my hair a little shake and it looks fabulous! I don't use hairspray. I get so many compliments and I love that I'm not using any heat styling other than the blow dryer. I do still use a straightener or curling iron on occasion, but Velcro rollers are my go-to easy style.

I don't brush my hair. I'm asian and have bone straight hair, the curlers just give me some waves. If I remember, I use some hairspray in the ladies room

After I was reading this thread, I went to Pinterest to check it out. They make it look easy! I think they would work great on my hair, and give me the look I'm going for but I feel like I would be a klutz with them! But I might give em a whirl.

Growing up in a predominantly Dominican part of upper Manhattan and spending time in the Carribbean it was "normal" for me to see woman out and about in their hair rollers. My mom used to set my hair as a child and take me out in my rollers. I didn't mind it one bit.
As a teen we moved to MA and I quickly learned that going out with rollers in your hair was a big No, No. I still to this day do occasionally venture out in my hair rollers and just ignore the looks and whispers. I'm confident enough to rock my roller sets, after all people walk around half naked or with much crazier hair colors and styles.
So I guess it all depends on where you live and your culture.

Was very common when I was a kid growing up in the city. I honestly haven't seen anyone wear rollers in public in a really long time!

I had some that were called Hot Sticks. They were pink and purple, but they didn't come in a bag.
