My 8 year old would like to get her hair braided on our upcoming cruise. Is it better to do it onboard (we are on the Wonder) or in Nassau?

And why?

Also- does anyone know the current cost?

Thanks!

JMO, but I'd do it on the ship. My personal feeling is that the sanitary standards would be higher there.

Very affordable onboard. Of course depends on how much hair, but was less than $20 for our 4 year old.

I thought it would be fun to do it at CC and assumed it was the same CM's as on the ship but they are not! I had double the braids in my hair which cost more than doing it on the ship. If you decide to do it at CC or any other port in the Bahamas, make sure to tell them a limit on the braids if you have a price limit! lol

On the ship, they have their hours posted and if they aren't busy I believe they can take walk-ups and if not, just make an appt.

Recommend you braid the hair as late into your trip as possible. When you see all the sun burnt scalps walking around, you'll understand.

I definitely recommend doing it on the ship. It is much cheaper there and they are very very nice. My girls thought the braids were fun but they did complain about them hurting quite a bit and didn't leave them in as long as I thought they would.

Appointments were encouraged on board. 4 year old said it didn't hurt a bit and cried when we had to finally take them out. We were on the Magic. Can't remember the name of the CM, but she was from St. lucia.

We did it in CC. I thought they did an excellent job. It was our last day so I didn't have to worry about DD's scalp burning. She chose the headband style which was 15 braids that went midway to the center of her head. It was really cute. The prices, IMO, were reasonable. $2 a braid for what DD had done. Each braid got two beads which my DD got to pick out. The girl next to us had 2 or 3 long braids done and was charged $7. I think the charge was $1.50 for short, $2 for medium, and $2.50 for long. I forget the price of the wrap, but I remember thinking it wasn't bad. Cheaper than at WDW.

I paid $30 for DD's 15 braids, $36 after tip. Also, you can pay with your KTTW card on CC, which is nice. No worries about cash. DD loved doing it on the beach. It was a fun little memory for her from CC. She still has them in her hair and was excited to wear them to school today. They last 3 weeks according to the woman that did them and she has had them in without a problem since December 27th. :) Good luck OP! ETA: There was no wait or need for apt on the island. They had 4 or 5 women braiding. They are super FAST too. She did DD's entire head in less than 10 min!! Her hands were like a blur. Lol.

if you have it done in Nassau you can 'negotiate' the price

had dd's whole head, shoulder length hair done 3 different times. Never a problem and never paid CLOSE to posted price

Hint, walk downtown and look for a sign to a beauty parlor, there are several just off the main drag ... go in and negotiate. Advantage is dd sat in a soft regular HD chair in a/c! I sat and watched the entire process and appreciated the a/c too (learned this one after first time in the street market), when first braider started getting sloppy I talked to 'd boss' and a relief braider was brought in.

Entire job took a couple of hours. I paid less that half the asking price but tipped nicely.

this is a DAD speaking . . .

we had it done on CC one time as well, no better job, cost WAY more and it was outside (hot)

If DD does get it done, make sure to bring sunscreen with you for her scalp. They don't recommend the spray sunscreen because it can cause the bands to become weak and break but if you use spray, put it on your palm and dab it on like lotion.

My daughters (5 and 9) had 2-3 done like a headband. They charged $2 per braid on the ship and it was done pretty quickly however both said it hurt very badly. The Disney employees said they must stop if the child is crying but both my girls were on the verge of tears the entire time.

do they do it on wonder pool deck like Dream? I have done it in port at Nassau. DD only wants a few braids so not really a huge concern on the scalp burn.

Thank you!!!

ETA: where exactly is hair braiding on CC?

It was on the walkway between Cookies and the She Sells Sea Shells store. Next to the family beach, on the right, before you get to Pelican Plunge though. Hope that makes sense. Basically past the first shop and eating area but before you get to the second. :) I am so awful at directions. Sorry. My husband makes fun of me all the time when I try to give people directions!!

I'm hoping to get these done at the beginning of the week for my DD as her hair can be a difficult to manage at times.

About the sunscreen tho I have a spray that isn't a aerosol made by Loreal that is made for scalps, will that type of spray weaken the bands?

I'm so glad I read this post, dd has a very sensitive scalp and now I'm thinking she won't want this if it is painful in the least. I can cross it off my list! Thx!

I would definitely recommend on the ship. My older daughter did it in Nassau and all I saw was tears running down her face and she was a teenager at the time. We also did it once on Castaway and a similar experience. My younger daughter has always done it on the ship. She started around age 6 and has been doing it the last 6 years or so. Probably done it at least 10 times. When you get all the rows it is really hard to get out when you get back home and so she quite doing that and just gets a few braids in the front. (kind of off to the side) They charge $2 a braid I think for that. You get a few braids and beads without the pain. Also just put a touch of sunscreen and rub on the scalp. We have never had a burnt scalp.

My daughter had it done on Nassau and in Feb. on CC. I don't remember the price on Nassau and I think it was $2 a braid on CC. My daughter is good about the pain but it definitely hurts having it done (did see other little girls near tears) - they ARE pulling the littlest hairs! And it's pretty difficult taking them out....
