Is there a place to have my daughter's hair braided on the ship? She would love this and I don't want to make her wait until a port.

This past Feb 08' our DD (10) did this on board. Once on board check your navigator for times to sign your DD up. Go first thing as the time slots fill up pretty fast. They do offer it for your Castaway Cay day, but I wouldn't want to spend that much time doing hair with only one day on the island. We did find the younger girls found it to be somewhat painful, as the braids are very tight. Our DD said it hurt for a bit, but then she was okay.

PS Our hairdresser recommended still washing and really conditioning your hair while in the braids. Don't be shocked by the amount of hair they loose when you take the braids out, it truly is normal.

If, I remember correctly it was $25-$50 depending on the number of braids and you have beads addes as well. Now depending on the length of the childs hair beads may not be very comfortable. We passed on the beads.

It seemed to be $1.50 per braid on the Wonder last week if you did braids on the ship. It was MUCH cheaper in Nassau, like $0.50 per braid or so, there were women right outside the cruise ship area braiding hair. I'd recommend waiting until you get to a port, especially if you're surprising her with this, as it is much more cost-effective.

It has been our experience that it is much cleaner when done on the ship or Castaway Cay than when done in one of the other ports. All seemed to be around 1.00-2.00 per braid depending on the length of hair.

Once done, don't forget to put sunscreen on between the braids!

Have fun!

DD2 had her hair braided on the ship - it was Thursday of a the 7-day Magic, so maybe most kids already had their hair done - we just walked right on up and got it done. Our cost was $2 a braid with beads, but her hair isn't that long yet! :)

DD and I had our hair braided on the ship both times we've sailed. Dd was four the first time. She and I watched other girls have their hair braided during the wait for our appointment so she would have an idea of what to expect. At someone's suggestion, I gave her a bowl of ice cream to eat while she was having her hair braided. This distraction worked very well.

I had my hair braided in St. Maarten several years back....I just got a few braids on one side....gave me the "island look" without taking forever and didn't cost much.....:yay:
Also, when you take the braids out, be patient, it does take a while..... :flower3:

Is the hair brading offered on the ship on embarkation and sea days? Where do you sign up? At Guest Services?

We are traveling with another family, and although the braids may cost a little more on this ship, I think DD would rather have it done earlier in the cruise, rather than later. On the Eastern, we have two full days at sea right up front, so I am hoping she can get it done then.

You may make appts. the first day on the ship, though it was very late in the day by the family pool. Most CC's can direct you once on board.

If, you child has long hair, it may take a while, so the icecream idea is a good one. Our dd (11) brought her DS and played that while her hair was being done. Now we were quite surprised how quickly they do work.

Another thing to note is that we had friends that have done both the ship braids and port braids. They found that the ones done on board lasted longer than port.

hair braiding is available on sea days only on the ship, and also on Castaway Cay. You have to make an appointment. Just a warning, it's pretty painful when they go in. I have seen many girls cry and DD was in tears too. But as soon as it's done, it's fine and no longer painful. Just remember the sunscreen between the braids!

My DD6 had hers done on the ship on the last day. She had 14 braids done with beads, but only done from the forehead to about 4 inches back. It was $28. It was not at all uncomfortable to her. But, I'm sure that is a matter of who is doing the braiding and what 'style' they are doing. Like others have mentioned don't forget to use sunscreen between the braids. Also, on the ship they put some sort of gel in the hair. Once we took the braids out it took quite a few washings to get the 'greasy' look out of her hair.

My daughter had her hair braided on the Magic in April and it cost us $1/braid and she got 4 of them done in the center of her head. She had absolutely no pain (she is very vocal and would have told the operator in a second had she felt pain). They also did not use any sort of gel or grease in her hair. We didn't make the appointment until the 5th day of the cruise, for the 6th night. We didn't want it done earlier because I didn't want the portraits to have her braids in.

We didn't check the price on any islands, but we had her hair braided in Florida a month earlier and they cost us waaaaay more, like $6/braid.

My dd7 had her hair done in the cornrow headband style which braids only the first few inches back and it was so cute. We made an appt for after our excursion on Grand Cayman day. It took about a half hour, had no pain, put in beads for a headband look, no gel and it lasted about 6 weeks. It was $25 plus tip. I felt it was very worth it. My dd would not let me take them out for the longest time. She loved having them in. On our next cruise, we will make the appt asap so she can get them done early in the cruise. We loved the look and it was such easy maintenance for swimming and such.

How much do the braids typically cost on the ship?

We just got off the Mexican Riviera DCL on July 27th (best vacation ever) and my daughter had her entire head braided on the ship and it was $59.00 and she has long hair and alot of hair. We had it done on the ship over the islands just for sanitation reasons. I think it is cheaper on the islands. They are set up everyday out by the goofy pool and you will need to go by and make your appointment as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

My daughter was IN TEARS when she had her hair braided on the ship. They were very rough with her, and it's not like she hadn't ever had her hair braided before. So, just beware of that.

My daughter just had it done on the Wonder. $2 per braid; $1.50 per cornrow. It was pricey to do the all of her hair, but she LOVES it!

This is exactly how my daughter would want her hair done. It'll be rather long by the time we go since she is growing it again for "Locks for Love". It will be past her shoulder blades. But she will only want it braided on the top of her head. Will it matter that the rest is long?
