hair braiding ??

bought some ribbon last night that is shown on the photo to use in basic braids (I can't frenchbraid)....dd has been wanting pigtails for school so that's what I've been doing & thought the ribbons would sure be cute to add in...

BUT I can't figure it out!!! I didn't know I was SO DUMB!!! I jsut figured I'd run the ribbon under the rubberband to secure it & hold it in my hand on top of the strand as I braided it - well the ribbon got hidden in the braid - you couldnt' see more than the top 1/2" or so then it was gone....needless to say I took it out & didn't try again....

ANyone know how to braid ribbon into the hair???

Okay, this is just what I think, and not what I know...but I think you have to make the ribbon replace one of the thirds of hair. In other words, instead of dividing the hair into thirds, you divide it in half and the ribbon is the thrid part. Then you braid the two "parts" of hair and the ribbon together as if they were each a section of hair. Did that make sense?

I would try this on my dd's to make sure (I've always wanted to anyway, but never think about it when I'm braiding) but they've been asleep for a couple of hours or so. I will try it tomorrow and let you know

ok thanks ---I'll try it in the a.m. too....but then I wonder if it will look like a braid or more like a twist without the 3rd strand & then I'd think it would be harder to handle being in 2 thick strands....hmmmm...I dunno but i'm sure gonna try it!

I bought the ribbons from Target - Goody sells them & of course it mentions on the pkg for ideas go to the website -and NOPE nothing on the website but things to buy! Not much help @ all! STINKS! Thought for sure I could find directions there....been looking online & all I could find so far was how to use a needle & sew ribbon thru a long to the waist french braid to make the braid short (shoulder length) something we certainly dont need! I can't see trying to use a needle around either one of my dd's!

One other question ---do you have a tip on how to get the part straight? I struggle with this EVERy morning! My mom can make a perfect part on one try & it may take me 5-6 tries to get an acceptable part - or we're late for school..... I just can't get it right...

I swear by this book. My mom always wacked my hair off into a bowl cut when I was little. I vowed not to do the same to my little girl. Of course when my little girl came along 5 years ago I knew very little about how to style her hair.

This book really helps!! Hope you figure out the ribbon thing.

How I part my dds' hair: I get a comb with a pointed end. I look staight at her and put the pointed end right in the center of her forehead. Then she turns around and I put a finger (of the other hand, the one not holding the comb) on the back of her neck, in the very center. Then I drag the comb in a straight line from point A to point B. Just make the line. Even if it's not perfectly centered, it will be straight. Then I grab all the hair on one side, brush it together and braid it, or whatever. Then I do the same to the other side. This took me awhile to get right, too. It's kind of sad to see early pics of dd1 when I obviously didn't have the whole hair thing together very well

HA HA! I know what you mean - sometimes you look @ dd#2 & you'd think I was just starting out learning to part hair! BUt I'm gonna have plenty of pracitce with dd#3 on the way!!!

Thanks for the tip - I have never tried starting the part in the front - I naturally start @ the top of her head (in the back) & someone once told me they start @ the nape of the neck & go up (but I end up w/a big mess that way) so I'm gonna try having her look @ me like you said & go from there....and I dont' use the right kinda comb either - I just use a plain ole comb -dont' have the kind w/the pointed end - come to think of it that's what mym om has---bet that's the secret!---BUT THEN AGAIN if you can't draw a straight line on paper I dont' knwo how I think I can draw a straight line on my kiddos moving head! LOL

Try braiding it "backwards" by going under instead of over. That should put the ribbon in front rather than in the back.

I've done this in the past. And yes, you divide the hair in two, and use the ribbon as the third strand. If your DD's hair is thick, it will look a little lopsided. You could try doing four braids instead of two (i.e. divide the ponytail into two).
