Haggis: Illegal to import from Scotland

My wife and I both enjoyed haggis in Scotland and after the Podcast discussion, I wonder if it is possible to mail-order haggis direct from Scotland.

Unfortunately, I found this report from the BBC that says the US government has banned the importation of haggis into the USA since 1989 "mad cow" disease scare because it contains offal ingredients.

Only the offal-free variant of haggis is allowed to be imported into the USA.

I'd hate to see the podcast team busted on a customs violation. "We've got your surrounded!" "Come out with your haggis over your head!"

That is just silly!

Our meat is fine, you can't judge now for something that happened 10 years ago!

Plus that report was published last year, things may have changed, also i think its only a ban on haggis using lung or something like that. There are many kinds of haggis! (all of which are gross I have to point out! lol!)

Even though I'm a Scot, I will agree with the gross part. I have heard of vegetarian haggis though. Still, yuck.

two cows are standing in a scottish field, one says to the other, "bummer about that mad cow disease huh?"..... the other cow says, "why would I care? Im a chicken.":rotfl2:

I love that joke! (However I usually supplement Scottish for French, and Chicken for Turtle!) :goodvibes

that joke is a new one for me - very funny

Come out with your Haggis over your head - that sounds like a tag in the making to me

ok, is my house going to be raided? I have left over haggis in my freezer!!!! :scared:

I would run now , change your name , dye your hair and never speak of haggis again. I am just dying my hair now :lmao:

Yeah, these days Mad Cow disease is gone, you only need to worry about Foot and Mouth and Bird Flu in our meat :rotfl: :lmao:

(please note I am joking and only eat British meat :thumbsup2 - smaller carbon foot print)

ok Jackie, My family has relocated and I have changed my name. What Haggis? I don't know anything about Haggis!:confused3

This was raised by the First Minister last year during Tartan Week in New York.

As wishspirt says it is just plain silly to ban exports. But then why would we ever expect bureaucrats and governments to do anything sensible :rolleyes1

Looks like we could start a blackmarket distribution of Haggis using the DIS as cover :lmao:
Or make your own here

BTW vegetarian haggis is like decaf coffee... why, why!!!

OK, at the risk of finding out more than I really need to know, I did look at the recipe you noted. What on earth are "the pluck" and "ox bung"?:confused3

Ok Reid, I can eat Haggis, I love Haggis , BUT, I cannot make it myself!!!! I will continue to import. Or maybe a trip to Scotland? Get the spare room ready!

I couldn't make it either :scared1: Come visit us anytime :)

All I can say is Oh, My!

I guess I won't be looking at that recipe if I ever want to try it someday. :scared:

 I just googled pluck and the ox part. There very little chance of me wanting to taste it unless highly motivated. NC Beast might like to try it since he liked black pudding when we were in Ireland.

There was me thinking that DISers were made of stronger stuff :rolleyes1

Not made haggis myself but did get the opportunity to help make black pudding

I've always thought it healthy that the troops realise where their food comes from :) Rather than seeing it as something inanimate on a supermarket tray :confused3

Always space here for our overseas cousins :goodvibes
