Haggis: Illegal to import from Scotland

My wife and I both enjoyed haggis in Scotland and after the Podcast discussion, I wonder if it is possible to mail-order haggis direct from Scotland.

Unfortunately, I found this report from the BBC that says the US government has banned the importation of haggis into the USA since 1989 "mad cow" disease scare because it contains offal ingredients.

Only the offal-free variant of haggis is allowed to be imported into the USA.

I'd hate to see the podcast team busted on a customs violation. "We've got your surrounded!" "Come out with your haggis over your head!"

Our meat is fine, you can't judge now for something that happened 10 years ago!

Plus that report was published last year, things may have changed, also i think its only a ban on haggis using lung or something like that. There are many kinds of haggis! (all of which are gross I have to point out! lol!)

Even though I'm a Scot, I will agree with the gross part. I have heard of vegetarian haggis though. Still, yuck.

I love that joke! (However I usually supplement Scottish for French, and Chicken for Turtle!)

Yeah, these days Mad Cow disease is gone, you only need to worry about Foot and Mouth and Bird Flu in our meat

As wishspirt says it is just plain silly to ban exports. But then why would we ever expect bureaucrats and governments to do anything sensible

Looks like we could start a blackmarket distribution of Haggis using the DIS as cover
Or make your own here

I guess I won't be looking at that recipe if I ever want to try it someday.

I just googled pluck and the ox part. There very little chance of me wanting to taste it unless highly motivated. NC Beast might like to try it since he liked black pudding when we were in Ireland.

Not made haggis myself but did get the opportunity to help make black pudding

I've always thought it healthy that the troops realise where their food comes from Rather than seeing it as something inanimate on a supermarket tray
