My DD5 has been saving all of her birthday money and pennies for our November trip. When she saw a picture on the front page of our paper of a young child crying in New Orleans, she began to cry too.

A few hours later she came downstairs with all of her savings in a little envelope and asked me to mail it to the child in the paper so she could buy a stuffed animal to make her feel better.

I've seen alot of misery in my line of work and it takes alot to get me tear up, but I became a blubbering mess.

I feel like the luckiest Dad in the world.

You are - well done on raising an unselfish child, you must be very proud :cloud9:

very sweet that you both feel that way

Wow, what a special child you have :) Congrats to you on setting such a good example and raising a wonderful little girl...the world's a better place because of people like your daughter :)

My DS10 has helped too. I know it is not much, but I am very proud of him. His grandparents have a 2nd home on a golf course in Delaware and he has opened a stand on the first fairway selling golf balls this summer. He drives around on the golf cart each night after the course is closed looking for lost golf balls. He takes them back to the house, cleans them up, sorts them according to name brand, type (ie "ladies balls" etc) and condition.

He has been selling all summer and typically makes about $15 - $18 on a good day, at $.50 per ball in good condition with scuffed balls at 5 for $1.

This past weekend (a holiday weekend), he put out a sign and told all customers that he would be donating all money made to aid the victems of Katrina. In addition, my company (Chase Manhattan) will match any money donated.

Well, he worked HARD all weekend long and made $168 which my company will match to make a total donation of $336!

I know that it is not a ton of money in the grand scheme of things, but I am VERY proud of him for doing what he could to help (he came up with the idea himself after seeing a picture in our paper of a little girl looking sadly at the wreckage which was her house).

At 10, he has had life really easy. He goes to private school, takes vacations to the beach and Disney every year, and has lots of wonderful toys and books. This tragedy was able to bring home to him what I have been trying to tell him for years - how VERY fortunate he is. I am proud of him for working so hard to make a difference (no matter how little!)
