Hi all,
So for the past three years, I had a kodak easy share camera. Nothing fancy, but it definitely worked as my first real digital camera. It was 6.1 MP with a 3x zoom.

Fast forward to this weekend. The kodak camera has finally had it so it was time to buy a new camera.

I got a Canon Powershot SX10 IS which has a 20x zoom and 10 MP!!!

I'm really excited. Does anyone else have this camera? How do you like it?

I too am going from a Kodak to an advanced point & shoot. I am looking at the Sony Cybershot DSC-H50 and the Canon SX10 IS.

What others did you consider? What made you choose the Canon? I really like the flip-screen and the fact that you can turn it over to protect the screen. How have you found it to use (in terms of ease compared to the Kodak)?

Thanks!

Congratulations!!

I had an S2IS, back in the day, and I LOVED that flip screen! It allows you to get sooo many creative pictures that you can't get with a regular P&S. Couldn't tell you how often I held that camera above a crowd and got exactly the picture I wanted the first time. Don't tell anyone but...sometimes I miss having a Canon superzoom..

Yes.. I have one (SX10). Bought it on Amazon over Christmas..

A little heavier than my other (A710IS).. but, love the zoom.

I also considered the CAnon SX 110 and a Sony one that is very similar but can't remember the name....had 18x zoom and 10 MP and also a flip screen

I absolutely LOVE the flip screen, I feel like it protects the LCD very well.

I think it takes really really good pictures. I think it's pretty easy to use on Auto, I don't really get confused until I start trying to use the features haha.....have to study the manual. But I think it is really easy to use right out of the box.

Totally reccomend it! :) :thumbsup2

I am LOVING the zoom. It's crazy to go froma little 3x zoom to a 20x zoom. I mean, it's just amazing the pictures I am able to get now. I absolutely love the flip screen for that reason too. Especially for the idea of vacation since it is usually DBF and I, now we can take pictures of ourselves with something in the background and actually SEE what it's going to look like, instead of trusting some stranger to take it who may just run off with my camera.

lovelovelovelove it!!!!!!!!

Do you plan on buying an additional flash? I don't know if I would - I know the hotshoe is there for it...but if I don't really plan on using it, it almost seems like a waste. Or am I just totally overthinking this!!:confused3

I went to Best Buy at lunch and saw them both side-by-side. I am even more confused now! I think the Canon would be great, but I don't like the thought of AA batteries (and the weight), and I LOVE the color accent feature and color swap! Those right there about sold me. The Sony seems like it would be easier to use, it also has a tilt screen (although it doesn't reverse to protect the LCD). Oh boy...decisions!

I actually like AA batteries.. if your 'battery' is dead, pop in new ones (who doesn't carry AA?'s).. otherwise, if your 'battery' is dead.. it really is dead unless you charge it/or have a backup

The battery situation is really the only thing I liked better about my little kodak. It took doube a's but also took a battery pack that you could recharge through the photo printer.

I'm just going to have to invest in some really good rechargable batteries and make sure to have a set on me all the time.

The flash on it is actually really good, so I don't think I'll buy the additional one.

The Canon is a little heavier but in my mind (I'm probably way overthinking this lol) I'm thinking it's actually a good thing cuz that maybe means the hardware inside is better???? I'm such an amateur

Cathie - What, if any, one thing made you choose Canon. Just curious. I had my heart set on the Sony...before the salesperson introduced me to the Canon. Now I love both.

I know that only I know the right decision and camera for me. This is going to be my birthday present from DH. I am trying to take all of the guesswork out of the equation for him.

My boyfriend actually has the Canon SX 100.....it's the earlier version of the other one I was looking at. I really really liked his camera. He's had it for about a year now and has had no problems with it, it has really great quality.

I also looked through a ton of reviews on bestbuy.com, and on different camera review sites, and found a lot of favorable reviews for my camera; I didn't really find a lot of technical problems with it, just user's personal preferences and opinions (not liking too many features, the viewfinder, etc)

Go to either:

I really like dpreview
The SX10 is 'heavy' compared to a point/shoot (i have an a710is canon) - fits in the pocket.. works great
I like Canon>Sony for few reasons (i have their printer.. sony=>getting bad lately, i.e. playstation, finances, ingenuity - all dropping.. and their SLR's (Canon)'s are very widely used [digital rebel, XT, XTi, XS, XSi, etc] by lots of people

hi pnutmnm..i just wanted to tell you i have the sony h50, and my previous camera was the canon s5 (step down from the sx1)...i have to tell you i am torn, somedays i regret selling my s5, other days i am grateful...here are my main difference likes and dislikes

sony-LOVE the screen, puts the canon to shame...3 inches is amazing...i have a protective plastic cover on mine...called a pop up shade
Canon-LOVE the movie mode, puts the sony to shame ONLY in dark conditions
Sony-LOVE how much lighter it is than the canon (and i think the new one is even heavier)
Canon-LOVE that it took AA's, although this is one the reasons it is so heavy...

For my sony, i just bought an extra battery, and have never had a battery issue...

As for pic quality, one day i think the canon is better, next the sony...i say it is pretty much even...i sometimes think the canon was easier to get a better pic, but not really sure...on a beautful sunny day, pics are both excellent..i can say, that if you bump the ISO up( when it is darker out), the Sony wins (canon gets pretty grainy pics the more u bump up the iso)

I truly think you just gotta do a hands on test and search online for some pics...i can send you some pics from my h50 if you give my your email address ( i can also send some from my canon, but it was the older model so it would probably not be worth it)...Good luck in your decision, i am sure you will enjoy both...i think they are both great cameras...

Sharon-
I just sent you a PM.

Through some of the sites that I have visited for comparisons, they both seem to be a dead heat. One leans to Sony the other leans to Canon. Unfortunately, my DH is no help -- he leans to the Sony because it costs less! He has yet to get into me recent facination with picture taking.

Thank you so much! :worship:

Cathie-

Just had to post. DH took me out today and bought me my birthday present --- the Canon SX10! So far, I am loving it! Thanks to you and everyone else here with their expertise and opinions.

C'mon people....post some photos taken with the Canon SX10 IS! I'm dying to get one (and I have a big birthday coming up), but every time I'm ready to take the plunge, there are rumors of more layoffs at work, or my DS breaks his leg and we need $$ to pay the deductible and out-of-pocket....

I have taken about 100 shots so far - still playing. I have to still install the software.I promise that I will post pics as soon as I can.

Had to bump this thread.....my bday was last week, and DH surprised me with the SX10 IS!!! I've been using my S3 IS, so the learning curve isn't too steep, but boy, am I lovin' the 20X zoom!!:thumbsup2

The viewfinder is much brighter and clearer than my S3! So far, I think I'll like using the dial to set the shutter, aperture and exposure compensation. I really need to play with it some more, but I'll be posting some photos soon!

I know that I'm heading for a dSLR, but with 1 kid in college, 2nd one going in 2010, layoffs at work, etc., etc., this camera is about as close as you can get without spending lots of $$ for a dSLR.
