Hi everyone,
I wanted to post my experience about our trip last week. First of all, let me say that I had reserved a scooter from Apple a few months in advance. Price was great - $160 for the week. It was waiting at the resort when we checked in (although I had asked for a meet and greet so we could get help taking it apart, loading it in the van, etc.). It seemed brand new, was really nice. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hips, knees, ankles and shoulders (so far).
The week before my trip, I contracted walking pneumonia. It was kind of rough so my doctor prescribed prednisone for my lungs to heal up nicely. I had a week supply of 5 a day. Some of you may know where this is going!
Prednisone was the miracle drug for me. It took away all my pain - everywhere! I walked the entire trip.
From the research I've done, prednisone is bad for you if you take it for more than 4 weeks - lots of side effects, etc. But hopefully I can convince my doctor to give me a week's dosage for every trip. It IS a treatment for bad arthritis, but is usually only done as a maintenance drug when other treatments don't work.
For those of you who know the book, I felt like Charly in Flowers for Algernon. I KNEW I was going to go back to being "crippled" but it was okay for the time that I felt like I did 20 years ago! I think I cried every day from the joy of being pain-free.
I danced, I stood in line, I walked all around World Showcase. It was the best trip I've had with my family since we started taking the kids in January 2009.
Anyway, I'm not trying to be irresponsible in discussing this. I know prednisone has terrible side effects long-term, but I'm hoping that short-term use can help make a Disney trip easier for me in the future.
I missed the ECV for storage and when I was tired, but I didn't want to use it if I didn't need it. Of course, I had already paid for it, but I didn't care.
Please don't think I'm gloating about it - I just wanted to share my joy with folks who would understand.
All the best!
