Had a bad fall at BWV today...

A few years ago we drove to Disney and stayed at AKL on points. At the end of our stay we start to load the car up . My son at this point was not feeling well he became very ..very Ill...

I was 10 mins out of the akl driveway and had to go back.

I went back to Akl pulled into the security hut took him what was going on before i could park the car near the front door two managers were there and a Emt responce was on the way within mins there were there.

We had to go to the Hospital that is in Celibration(spelling) While we were there the Hotel Manager called to talk with us I explaned that i have no more points and were on our way home he arranged for a room /with food vouchers(no ddp at that time) and passes for my daughter and wife while my son was in the hospital till we were able to Go home safely..

MY point is that It has been my person experince that Disney does help in the time of need.

Now with that said I have also been at lecellar eating supper when a Man started to cough we was choking on his steak the wait staff did not know what to do. Being that I am retired public safety I jumped up did the hiemlic on him cleared his airway. I sat back down after i knew he was ok sipped my beer and finished my steak.

This was My 10th wedding celibration the wait staff and manaer DID not bat a eye too this. They did take my name and hotel I think in case i hurt the man lol But The man who was chocking did pay for my meal ..

When I got back to the hotel that night A dvc manager had brought a bottle of Champane to the room and saying thank you

You experince is not good public relations at all .

I would write a letter to DVC telling about the what where when and be very detailed and to the point ..

I hope your feeling better

Dave

A couple of cruises back, I fell while getting out of the car (I was really exciteed) at the curb at the Disnery Cruise terminal. Hit my head, wounded my pride, felt like a total dunce. Those CM's were all over me. Escorted me into the terminal, made me sit down, checked me in, and let us board with the suites and handicapped people. DS said I should fall more often.

Thanks for all your advice and kind thoughts everyone.
No - I'm not jumping on calling a lawyer - that's not my knee jerk reaction to something like this. I guess my immediate concern was why they didn't have a first aide kit (small kits for small accidents) behind the front desk at least for someone to take care of their own small cuts - don't kids trip in the halls with all the running around? And why were they not more concerned about the damaged sidewalk? When my dh saw me fall he first thought I banged my face/chin into the ground - that certainly would have caused even more damage such as dental and that would have meant cost down the road. Luckily my injuries should heal without permanent damage although I'll go to my GP when we get home to have my leg looked at.
We took pictures of the area so I will post them when we get home - for those of you who think its my own fault for not looking where I was going... I guess I'm just a clutz and not a perfect as you. My fault the sidewalk was broken too ...
It will not ruin my time here. I didn't get much sleep last night and I'm moving much slower but I will take it as a sign to slow down and take in the details instead of trying to get more done before we leave. We head home tonight and I will start counting down the days until we get back again.

Heck, I've fallin just getting out of bed.

I'm sorry you fell, it really stinks when things like that happen! I think they should have small first aid kits available. On our last trip my son fell at Epcot and skinned up his knee and the CMs were all so helpful! I'm surprised at the treatment at BWV.

The truth is, a first aid kit in the hands of an untrained person can be much worse than the original problem.

Most off-the-shelf first aid kits contain non-prescription meds which should NEVER be given to any patient. For example, an EMT would never give a patient Tylenol or ibuprophen for any reason. We only give aspirin in cardiac cases -- and we don't give it then for pain. But a lot of first aid kits contain all three.

A lot of first aid kits also contain iodine swabs. Many people are allergic to iodine and don't know it. If you're allergic to penicillin, you are also allergic to iodine...but what untrained employee would know that?

The most important need for any sick or injured person is to be assessed by someone who knows what they are doing, and is trained to make a quick decision whether the patient needs more advanced care and/or needs to be transported to a hospital. Very few businesses in any industry have employees trained to make those decisions -- which is why they should call 9-1-1.

I would also urge everybody not to be shy about calling 9-1-1.

You're really not inconveniencing anyone by calling 9-1-1, and most of the time, they are the only people with enough training to really evaluate your medical issue properly.

I had a life threatening event happen when I was stung by a bee. I knew something was wrong, and my husband kept saying "I can drive you to the hospital". Well, my little angel told me to call "911" even though we felt stupid doing so. The EMT's told me I could have died along the way to the hospital if I was driven by car........long story short, I will always call the EMT's. They saved my life! :goodvibes

A couple of years ago, we took my mom to Disney with us. While we were on our way to a park a Disney bus backed into our car sending us about 5 feet back. The light was green and the Disney bus was in the intersection. Then the light turned red and the bus driver decided to back up. We could not back up because there was a car right in back of us. It was scary seeing this bus coming towards us and we couldn't do anything but blow the horn. As the bus hit our car and sent us backwards my mom started screaming. She hurt her neck and was in shock. When the Disney police came they called an ambulance, even though my mom didn't want one. They came and wanted her to go the hospital but she didn't want to go. They said that she should go but she refused. She thought she would be ok. She signed a form saying she refused to go the hospital which was a big mistake. She was in pain for a couple months. The police said that the Disney bus was wrong for backing up. They took all our information and asked where we were staying. We never heard anything else from them. I though at least they would call and see how she was feeling.

My children always our afraid if we are behind a Disney bus. They always talk about the Disney bus that, "Gave us a ride in our car."

You have a wonderful attitude about this, I doubt I would have been as gracious if I received that kind of "timely" assistance. If I were you I would write a letter or speak to someone about this situation before you leave so hopefully it doesn't happen to anyone else. I am glad you didn't let it spoil your trip.

... When the Disney police came they called an ambulance, even though my mom didn't want one...

Everyone should be aware that Disney Security Officers are not police officers, they are Disney employees paid to protect Disney's interests.

They are not impartial and are not looking out for your interests. If you have any issue that you even remotely think should be a police issue insist they call the Orange County Sheriff to file a report.

It's unfortunate when accidents happen, and I'm sorry that you were hurt, however your statement that you feel a little put off by how you were treated doesn't sit well. The Resort did offer to call 911 but you refused. The people who work for Disney are not medical practitioners, they don't have rubber gloves or the medical know how to determine the level of care you probably needed. Example: On a Friday I cleaned and bandaged what looked like a minor cut on a co-workers hand, at his request. He too refused to go to the clinic. By Monday morning he was at the emergency room with a full blown infection and did not return to work till 10 days later. Lesson learned, I am not qualified nor responsible for medical treatment, neither are the resort workers. I take my own bandages and Neosporin etc when I travel.

What would you have done had you tripped at home in front of your house or let's say in front of a bus stop in your city? Would your reaction be different becasue it's not Disney?

I think that most of us are all good people at heart, but this great country of ours would be in a lot better shape if the 1st reaction to any situation was not to "Get an attorney and take pictures" to see "How much do you think we can get?

From your own words it's clear to me that this was not your intention nor motive but sometimes it's good to see the other side of things. I hope you are recovered enough to still enjoy your trip.(No pun, intended)

I'm sad that you didn't get better customer service at your time of injury from a company that prides itself on excellent customer service. Had someone fallen in front of my home I would have gone out front to help them, gotten them a wash cloth, some ice, and sat with them while they called someone and helped them if they needed it. I think that's just being courteous. As a former Disney employee I am disappointed by their lack of common courtesy (letting you sit out there after your husband asked for help). When I worked at WDW I was walking through the employee parking lot and kicked a car's exhaust and cut my foot - they insisted I go to the hospital and get cleaned up and file an incident report. I was off the clock at the time. It seems to me that the least that should have been done was you should have been shown some "Southern hospitality" as well as an incident report filled out.

I didn't read in your post or others that you should sue, just some suggestions that you document the area in case you have permanent injuries. I just thought you were, as you said, underwhelemed but lack of concern. Don't feel bad for feeling like that...I feel it for you!!

Sending pixie dust for a speedy recovery....:wizard:

Think of it this way mickeywho?, for some reason your guardian angel has given you the opportunity to experience how life is for someone like me... with physical impairments.

I've made quite a study of park benches and flower beds as I nursed an arthritic knee.

If you're still sore, why not rent one of those scooters on the Boardwalk. (I believe the same place that does the bike rentals is renting ECVs now.) It'll make your life easier as you try to get around.:moped:

I would take pictures of the injuries, sidewalk, and surrounding area where you fell, go to the emergency room to have everything documented, and then get a lawyer. Disney will act like it never happened. When my sister slipped and fell on the POC ride because there was water on the seat where she stepped, they insisted there was no water and that they didn't see her fall.

No offense..but I think this is a perfect demonstration of why prices have skyrocketed....amongst other reasons of course. But the above statement says alot...:confused3

I'm sitting here at my gate waiting for the plane to arrive. Time to go home to the snow and icy sidewalks! :scared1:
I ended up going back to the front desk today to ask for an EMT to take a look at my "wounds" and make sure they were properly wrapped. My wrist had swollen up during the night so I wanted to check that it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. They came out to the hotel within 5 minutes and were really great. The same manager also came out when she recognized my name being spoken over the phone. I had a nice chat with her and told her that although I didn't expect her staff to be able to perform first aide they really should have some supplies behind the counter for a guest to help themselves if anything were to happen. There was no reason not to have a few supplies for guests to self-administer.
Security also arrived to check in on the call - and I assume to document it and my dh took him out to the sidewalk to show him where it happened. Of course, it was not marked in anyway - not even a caution cone. He put a sign on the spot and told us he would be asking for engineering to come out right away to fix it.
At the end of it all I won't be calling any lawyers - I'll be going to my GP for a quick check in a couple of days - and I'll be contacting Disney to make sure they do something about that sidewalk and rethink their first aid strategy. That will be the end of it.
I didn't let it ruin the rest of our stay. We had a lovely time at BWV and were sad to leave today. To any of you heading over anytime soon - Watch your step!!
On a side note:
Your comments sure spoke the truth BroganMc - it was a great chance to slow my pace and enjoy. About 20 years ago I had a really really bad sunburn on the back of my ankles - put sunblock on too sloppily and missed the back on my calves. I had was sore and swollen and on arriving at MK a CM spotted me and walked me into first aid to get a wheelchair. My legs and feet had doubled in size and I ended up being completely covered in blisters. :sad2: They covered my feet so they wouldn't get any worse and my lovely boyfriend - now dh - pushed me around for a few days. Certainly puts the world around you into perspective - not being fully in control of where I wanted to be and the quite varied reactions from CMs looking to help out. Anywhere from great seats at the shows - a perk anyone in a wheelchair is definitely entitled to - to dh being asked over me "would she like something to drink" at restaurants from waitstaff assuming I couldn't speak for myself.
Ugh! A bad spill on the sidewalk I can heal from. Wouldn't have minded trying the ECVs though - we did a Segway tour on this trip and it was a blast!

I hope you've made it home safely, even if Mother Nature doesn't have a happy welcome for you. (I posted a few days ago about how dreadful I felt and tired of winter.)

Sounds like you did exactly the right things today at BWV. I'll be down myself April 6 for 3 weeks. I'll look at that sidewalk (please post photos and directions) and see if anything's been done. Maybe between the two of us we can save someone else from a klutzy moment. PM me if you want.

to dh being asked over me "would she like something to drink" at restaurants from waitstaff assuming I couldn't speak for myself.

:rotfl: Oh yes, I've gotten that quite a bit in my lifetime. I still get it and even though I've trained my family not to respond or say "Ask her", they sometimes forget. Then I get mad at my family. It's hysterical.

Ugh! A bad spill on the sidewalk I can heal from. Wouldn't have minded trying the ECVs though - we did a Segway tour on this trip and it was a blast!

FWIW, the joy of ECVs, and in my case power wheelchairs, is that you are most certainly NOT dependent on someone else to go anywhere. When Southwest Airlines broke my powerchair batteries last NYE (that was my Disney endurance test as I tried to get my chair fixed when no one seemed to care), I revisited the push chair for a day. I lasted about 4 hours before I was spitting mad with frustration.

When you have your own power wheels you don't have any of that. Your only obstacles become natural things like curbs and steps, and Disney is actually pretty great about making accessible pathways.

My dad (76) uses a scooter/ECV when we go now. It has allowed him to tour like a 20 year old. Though, ironically, I get the "would he like a drink" question now. We just laugh. Silly people! :upsidedow

Glad you enjoyed the rest of your trip.

Please post a photo of the area.....going next month...would like to see if they did anything

Ready to be flamed by BW lovers, but this is typical of the kind of service we have gotten from the BW front desk area. We don't stay there anymore because we really, truly feel that they don't give a **** about the guests there. I have never felt that way about anyone at Disney anywhere, but the CM's at the BW really don't seem very caring or concerned about anyone or anything. Just speculating, but I wonder if the care would have been better at a different resort. Sorry, just my opinions based on our own experiences at the BW. Fire away!

Seriously, she fell and bruised her knee and scraped her hands. She should sue Disney for that? It is sad that some people in this world have no liability for their own actions, everything is the fault of someone else.

OP, sorry to hear about your fall. I agree that they should at least have a first aid kit available. It was nice of them to offer to pay for any hospitalization, if any is required. Hope your fall doesn't ruin your trip.

I really don't think this is a BW specific problem. As I said earlier, I don't think any resort front desk has anyone certified or equipped to handle those types of injuries, they rely on the Reedy Creek EMTs for that, they are the governmental/public services arm of Disney. Seriously, it is best to have your injuries treated/bandaged by a trained person that would know if it is serious enough for a hospital visit.
