I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few items so I am in the express (1 - 8 items) line. There are only a few people ahead of me. The other regular lines are full, lots of heaping carts, etc.

A family comes behind me with only a few items. Daughter is sulking and whining. This is the conversation I hear:

Mom: What's wrong Sarah?

Sarah: I wanted to go to lane number 4!

Mom: But this is the express lane, honey. We'd have to wait a long time if we go over there.

Sarah: I want lane number 4!

(poor, poor) Dad: No we're staying here.

Mom: No, Sarah wants to go to Lane 4.

Sarah: Hmph. (all sulky sounding)

(poor, poor) Dad: She'll get over it.

Mom: No. It's okay Sarah, we'll go wait in 4.

(poor, poor) Dad: That's insane, it'll take an hour.

Mom: You can stand there if you want to but Sarah and I and the groceries are going over there.

Sarah: Hmph. (sounding more satisfied now)

Mom (walking away): It's okay Sarah. I know you want lane 4 so mommy will go to lane 4 okay honey?

(poor, poor) Dad shlumps along
after them.

I mean, really???? What the..??????

By the way Sarah looked to be about 8.

Mom should have done the grocery shopping alone, and left bratty Sarah home with Daddy.

I was going to say unbelievable but unfortunately it's not. See nonsense like that all the time.

No way...Dad should have insisted he go shopping and leave mom with the snowflake that she created!

Oh. My. God. Wouldn't want to be around her at 14.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: It's funny..

But then again, it's not..:eek::eek::eek:

Could she have had some special needs, DD5 is special needs and among the things that she has is OCD and we have had issues with things with numbers. Not excusing if there are no issues but when your child is special needs sometime you just have to do things that seem crazy to prevent a complete meltdown and by the way my DD5's name is Sarah

Dad should go to the car and if it should absentmindedly drive home, so much the better.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't believe he was such a whipped dog about the whole thing. :sad2:

Even better; Dad: "Well, since I have the car keys, call me when you get through line 4. I may come back for you, or not; I'll decide then!"

Now would be a good time to get amnesia. He could just keep going.

I understand special needs, but won't giving into all the quirks of OCD just make the rituals even worse? Shouldn't the parent instead work to confront these rituals in many small ways daily, regardless of meltdown, in order to help the child overcome the obsessions and eventually learn to compromise within normal social settings?

Beyond that, I have seen behavior like this TONS of times. One DH and I saw at Animal Kingdom. There were two parents and a little boy at a shop in AK, The little boy was looking at the spinners and asked Mom and Dad if he could have one. "No, we are not buying that." Cue the young boy (appeared age 6) dropping to floor and screaming bloody murder. He was yelling 'But I waaaaaant it!! Please! I'll be gooooooood! PllleeeeaaaAAAAAASSEEE!" This brought on frantic looks by both parents. Mom yelling to dad "Just buy him the toy!! Okey honey... sssshshhhh. We'll buy it!"

Dad comes over and asks which spinner Johnny wants. Johnny claims to want TWO of them now and Dad scurries off to rapidly purchase both. This whole incident only took about 3-4 minutes but my DH and i were flabbergasted. The whole store stopped when this kid started to screech. Dad comes back with purchased toys and the waterworks stop instanteously. "What do you say Honey?" From Mom....."Thankyou Daddy..." Cue doe eyes from the spoiled brat. Sheesh.... I told DH if that ever happens without kids he has full permission to just shoot me.

These 2 parents are enablers and it's not going to be cute down the road when snowflake is older. And the dad needs to grow a pair and put his foot down to all nonsense.

Mom and Sarah go to check out lane #4. When they finally finish, Dad greets them with another woman by his side. He says: "You took so long that I started dating the express lane clerk. She'll make a great step-mother. She think's you're spoiled too!" :lmao:
