Gulp.... just upgraded (sticker shock)

Just pushed the button and ordered a D700.

It's overkill for my talent and skill level, but it's been purchased with inheritance $$ my grandfather left me. He was one of the first people to introduce me to the world of visual art, so it's a decent tribute to him. I will just have to work hard at learning.

I am coming from a D60 so this is going to be quite the adjustment.

A little freaked out over how much money I just spent.... trying to remember to breathe... breathe... breathe....

Code, to start I added a 85 1.4 and 50 1.4.

Next up: a wide-angle prime after recovering from this!

Congratulations!! :drool: So jealous---can't wait to see how you like it. You'll LOVE the improved high ISO, extra focus points and focus motor in the body. Having stepped up from the D60 to the D90 about a year ago, I can vouch for the fact that the added features are very nice and I'm sure the D700 will be even better.

Not sure what lenses you shoot with, but if you don't have any FX...do you plan on upgrading your glass at all or shooting in DX mode until you can purchase some FX glass?

Ann, at this point I have zero FX lenses. So yes, I ordered the 85 1.4 and the 50 1.4. That will get me started. Next will be a wide-angle prime.

I considered the 24-70 2.8 to start, but that 85 1.4 just kept calling.... and there's just something about primes. Switching lenses doesn't bother me, and I like having to zoom with my feet and love that they are (generally) much lighter and less intimidating that zooms.

I have to agree---I've been adding to my kit and find myself buying more primes. As it stands right now, I only have one zoom lens, Nikon's 70-200 f/2.8. For the record, I think you'll LOVE the 85 1.4, but it for some reason you experience sticker shock again there are a lot of great lenses for a little less money. I purchased the 85 1.8 after going back and forth about the 1.8 versus the 1.4. After seeing people's results on a 85 1.8 thread on NikonCafe.com, I decided that for now, the 1.8 would suit me. I would love the 1.4, but I figured I needed to fill out my kit a little bit more before spending that kind of money. I got a very nice used copy of the 1.8 for $320.

Not sure what wide(ish) angle lens you are looking for, but it seems the general concensus is that Nikon is lacking in fast wide primes. They just put out a new 24 1.4 the other day, which is not SUPER wide, but wide enough for most uses. Unfortunately, the price of the lens new is just over $2,000....

Congratulations on the new camera! I'm sure you'll love it. I added the Sony A850 (full frame) last fall and just try and forget about what I paid. Turns out I like it so much that my memory got very short about the cost!

I kept telling myself I could always sell it if it didn't like it and it wouldn't be a total loss. It's not going anywhere soon however. Luckily most of my lenses were full frame although I did "lose" my favorite one. The nice thing is it still could be used if I wished to.

Although I just purchased my first DSLR a few months ago (crop sensor of course I already find myself daydreaming about how long it would take to save up to buy a full frame camera.

The saying may be that "it's a poor craftsman that blames his tools", but there is nothing wrong with using the best tools while you are learning!

Kat, hopefully I will have the same experience and be so enthralled with FX that the sticker shock will fade...

On the other hand, Bstanley, if you feel yourself getting jealous just think about the price tag! LOL. Honestly I feel a bit queasy right now.


Anyway, now there will be zero excuses for bad photos. With gear like this there will be absolutely no denying that any issues are the result of the photographer's limitations....

Congrats. It is a nice camera. Look forward to seeing shots. I know the full frame low light is great on this. Totally worth every penny in my opinion.
