Gulf Shores and the beach in October?

We are thinking of going down to Gulf SHores this October for fall break, the week of Columbus Day.

I was hoping someone who has been down at that time, or lives in that area, can give me some info on the temps, is it too cold to get in the gulf, and how crowded is it?

We have been down there before, in June, but this year that is not possible due to my having knee surgery. I really want to go though - picked out a beautiful house to stay in, I just hope its not too chilly!

We may not have a beach for you to enjoy this October.:sad1:

We were in Clearwater last Oct/Nov and it was beautiful................loved the place and hope to get back again and for longer than 4 days this time.

I'd be watching the news very closely before I booked a beach vacation on the Gulf.

I'm not saying this lightly either, as I know the economic impact on the Gulf is going to be terrible and they'll need all the help and tourism they can get.

But if you're going for a Beach vacation, wanting to swim in the Gulf, you may end up not getting what you want.

The weather in October is usually quite nice. It just takes a little longer for it to be warm enough to swim. You might have to wait until 10 AM for the temps to be warm enough.

We have a timeshare the last week of June and will be going whether there is a beach or not. I am hoping things won't be too bad.

Taylor, at the rate this thing is going, the oil will probably still be spewing during your trip.

I have my fingers crossed for the whole region, but it's hard to be optimistic.

There was a similar thread yesterday about the oil/gulf vacations.
I have read this today:
http://www.thedestinlog.com/articles/oil-13617-county-spill.html
April 29, 2010 11:04 PM Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Dino Villani says the effects of an still uncontained oil spill off Louisiana could be felt here by the middle of next week.

And Michael Sole, secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, estimated it could be two or three months before oil pouring from the sunken rig can be contained.

and this from today

And the situation could become far more grave if the oil gets into the Gulf Stream and carries it to the beaches of Florida — and potentially loops around the state's southern tip and up the eastern seaboard. Prime fishing waters, pristine beaches and countless wildlife could be ruined.

"It will be on the East Coast of Florida in almost no time," Graber said. "I don't think we can prevent that. It's more of a question of when rather than if."
