Gulf Shores, AL or Hilton Head

We need to choose where to go for vacation for 1 week this June 12-19. We belong to a "vacation club" and we need to choose between a 2 bedroom condo at Gulf Shores Plantation in Gulf Shores, AL or a 1 bedroom condo at the Hilton Head Island Beach and Tennis resort. We have never been
to either area. I know a few people who have been to Hilton Head and really enjoyed it but I don't know anyone who has been to Gulf Shores. It will be myself, DH and DD10. DH is not a relax on the beach or at the pool kind of guy. When we go on vacation he likes to explore the area and do things. Can anyone help with which area would be a good place to go with things to keep us busy?

Don't know how helpful I'll be, but we just returned from a 2 night stay at Hilton Head Island (on our way back from Disney) & we stayed at the Disney Resort in a 2 bedroom suite. WOW! Was it ever gorgeous there!

Unfortunately, it was too cold to go swimming, but it was my DS8's first time to see the ocean! He collected seashells & my DH & DS8 went up in the lighthouse. You can rent bikes & ride around the island. It is so picturesque. There are some great shops & restaurants. I could find enough to do there for a week.

The Disney Resort also has day long activities (most are FREE) that you can sign up for. Perhaps your resort also offers different activities.

It was our first time at HHI & I can't wait to return. Naturally, I would also want to stay at the Disney resort there again too. We had a 2 bedroom suite (which was like a tree house in the woods). The suite was 1211 sq feet!! Bigger than the last condo I owned in California!!

Have a great time whatever you decide, but I would choose HHI!

We've been to Gulf Shores and Hilton Head. I would definitely pick HH. Lots of golf and tennis and other things to do besides sit on the beach. HH is more of a resort with lots of activities. HH is also not that far from Savannah, GA, which is a fun town to explore. Gulf Shores is nice but I think of it as more of a beach town.

I LOVE Hilton Head, but if the resort you mentioned is the one I'm thinking it is, it isn't very nice. Kind of mid Island, with nothing much around it. Looks a little run down. I'm not positive though...but fairly sure. Are there other properties on HH you could use your membership for? Most are very nice.

I've stayed at Gulf Shores Plantation once in the past and it was okay. Just like most condiminums in my opinion. However, you weren't too far from the beach and restaurants, and it did have an indoor pool as well. (for those of us who burn easily, it's great)!:) Have fun choosing.

Thanks everyone for the responses!!! This is such a hard decision:confused: !

Has anyone else ever been to these areas to give their opinions?

I have also stayed at the Gulf Shores Plantation. I have never been to Hilton Head but assume it would have more to offer.

Gulf Shores is a beach town as another user said. There is some golf and tennis at the Plantation but there is not really anything at Gulf Shores short of the beach, resteraunts, and shopping at outlets in Foley.

Also, if I am thinking of the right condo, the Plantation is close to Ft. Morgan which is nowhere near the main strip. You will have a lengthy drive to do anything other than the beach or condo activities.

I enjoy Gulf Shores and love the white sand beaches, but I grew up not far from there. Most people in Central Alabama go to Panama City or Destin, FL.

alabamaalan Would Gulf Shores Plantation be a good place to stay and do day trips to Mobile and the USS Alabama and Pensacola and Biloxi or would it be quite a drive to these other areas? These were some of the things we thought we might be able to do if we went there but now I'm wondering if it would be more driving than we would really want to do, especially if we drive to Alabama as we are thinking of doing (17 hour drive from here:( ).

I have been to both places and can tell you plenty. This will all depend on what you like to do and what kind of feel you like ina vaction destinatioin. I will take each place one at a time.

Hilton Head-This is of course old low country South Carolina. Anyone that has been to the coastal areas of South Carolina or Georgia can tell you that this coast line is easily one of th emost romantic and historic places in the country. Savannah Georgia is perhaps tops on my list for romantic cities. It is perfect for a anniversary or romantic getaway. The whole coastal area of Georgia and South Carolina is charecterized by huge live oak trees with branches that sweep to the ground and have wisps of spanish moss attached. At once you can feel the sensation of stepping into history, romance and even a little ghost story. The places in this area are unlike any I have seen elsewhere. As you go out onto the island you immediately realize that this whole place is dedicated to resort living and everything, I mean EVERYTHING is planned out as far as infrastructure. The roads are even patterned, in some spots, after european circular throughfares. You know the type that you see in movies where an intersection is not a four way but a very clustered up circle where you drive around until you hit the road you need and then shoot to the right. Even the Walmart had to break it's own corporate building and safety requirement regarding parking lot lighting to comply with the very strict building and development codes. GOLF I say that again GOLF is the main thing here. If anyone in your party loves golf this is heaven. There is another course every three feet or so. There is also lots of shopping. You can shop for small trinkets here or extremely expensive items of all kinds. There are many many dining options. Ah to the beach. This is where I place some great degree of importance. The beach here is okay. Not bad, not great, but okay. Lots of sharks. I do not care what anyone will tell you, I have fished these waters in SC, Ga., and North FLa for years and the sharks are abundant. Not to worry attacks are almost unheard of. I say this as you may wish to fish on the beach and you will pull in about 4 bonnet head sharks in the 1 to 1 1/2 foot range to every other fish out there you catch. The deep sea fishing on charters is great. The beach is great for layoing around and tanning. It is flat and has dark sand. It is a great deal like a darker sometimes muddier version of Daytona Beach if you have ever been there. Did I mention expense?? I think I did. Did I say VERY VERY expensive...or at least it can be. It has a high end resort clientel for the most part and caters to the Golf country club crowd. A round of golf at the Westin (excellent place) was well over $100 per person about 5 to 6 years ago. It can also be very crowded and hard to get tee times and seats at restaurants.

Gulf Shores-It is hard to beat the Gulf of Mexico for beaches and water. In fact Hilton Head cannot compete here. Absolutely hands down the gulf beaches are the best beaches you will find in the sooutheast as far as I am concerned. It doesn't really seem to matter where on the Gulf you go it is going to be gorgeous. White sand and untouched beaches all along the coastline. There is or at least was (5 years ago) little development here compared to nearby areas in Florida and certainly compared to Hilton Head. The ara has a beach and coast feel but maintains a special rural charm somehow. If you leave the beach and go north it looks like farmland and pine trees. There is a little shopping and a few good restaurants here. There is some great seafood here. There is not a great deal of anything in particular here but enough to make you happy and to have a good time. Development may have gone up though. I loved it. I was very relaxing here and very laid back. Jimmy Buffett would go here instead of Hilton Head...his sister owns a restaurant and lives here anyway.

I also loved Hilton Head for very different reasons. And now we get to the true cut in your decision. This is just my opinion but...
If you are taking the kids, the beach and pool is where you will spend the time. I would suggest Gulf Shores. You will have a better beach and less crowd with a water park or two as a diversion at Gulf Shores. There is outlet shopping and the fishing is also excellent offshore. Beach fishing is the pits. Offshore however is Phenominal! Golf is okay.

If you are going with DH or sig. other and romance is the key, go to Hilton Head. If golf is important definitely go to Hilton Head. If you like history, especially the romantic swashbuckling pirate type history, go to Hilton Head. If shopping and numerous great restaurants are enough of a diversion to where you will spend some time on the beach and a good deal of time doing other things=Hilton Head.

Very nicely done dawgfan.

Cheryl, you will probably need to look at mapquest for driving times. I do not know about Biloxi, but Mobile and Pensacola are not what I would consider distant drives. There are museums and attractions and resteraunts in all those cities worth going to depending on your interests; however Mobile is the only one I am personally familiar with.

Feel free to PM me with any particular questions about Mobile or Gulf Shores, but it looks like it depends on the interests of your family. I'm sure you can have a nice vacation at either!

Have been to Hilton Head. And, have not been to Gulf Shores, but agree with the poster who mentioned Destin!!!! I am a beach person, so those GORGEOUS white sand beaches and turquoise green water of the NW FL coast outweigh almost anything else to me!!! I would plan a trip back to my favorite spot at Destin in a heartbeat!!!

While I have no inclination to ever return to Hilton head... For some, Hilton Head would fit the bill. The whole Island is one huge self contained and regulated area. VERY low key. Golf, Tennis, and more Golf.... You could rent bikes, golf, sightsee, etc... But, as mentioned, the beaches in no way would ever even begin to compare.

I am sure that you and your family could find plenty to do at either location. Go online to each areas web-sites for a real feel of the look and flavor of each place. See which one fits your tastes the best!

I have never been to HH, but my dad and stepmother live 10 miles from GS in Foley, AL. Gulf Shores is a very relaxed type of place. Great places to eat, but not a lot to do except enjoy the beach, which my family does. You can go to Fort Morgan and then ride the ferry to visit other areas. We went to Bellingraph Gardens (I think my spelling is wrong) and it is a beautiful planatation. USS Alabama is not far away either. Also you can drive to Bayou La Batra where Bubba Blue in the movie Forrest Gump is from. Then there is Dauphin Island, worth a good explore too. Pensacola, Florida is maybe 90 minutes away. Mobile has many planations to tour also. We go see my dad a couple of times a year though and then drive on over to Panama City Beach. The reason for this though is we like to stay on the beach and my dad would get his feelings hurt if we don't stay with him when we are there. Foley has a huge outlet mall that is wonderful. If there is anything in particular you would like to know I will ask them and try to help you out. If you like to fix your own shrimp and seafood, there is an out of the way place called Billy's Seafood that is wonderful. I do like the gulf but I like the ocean too. All of my children are grown and married. We go to Myrtle Beach every fall and the gulf usually in the spring, plus once some other time just to see my dad. We usually go about the same time rates go down and right before they go up. Warm enough and much cheaper. Hope you have a great time where ever you go!:sunny:

We actually finally decided on Hilton Head. I have been having DH and DD look at all different web sites on the 2 and we were really having a hard time deciding  . At one point DH even said maybe we should draw out of a hat to decide LOL. My sister came over yesterday with her pictures and some more info on Hilton Head, Savnnah and Charleston from when they had gone last year and DH finally said it looks nice, let's go there and maybe next year we'll go to Gulf Shores.

Thanks everyone for all the info you provided on the different areas!!!!
