I have never played a musical intrumenta and am not very cordinated not to mention shy. i have always wanted to play the guitar but idk where i should start? i dont want to get a teacher and then realize i dont like playing the guitar....oh yeah and i cant read music.

I tried teaching myself.... it went nowhere  I'm in my second year of guitar instructed (I take private lessons at my local music studio once a week for 1/2 an hour) and I looove it. But my teacher is super hot and really good at teaching me stuff.

If you really want to self-teach, I'd try looking online for some guitar tabs (megachords.com is my favourite chord site). At the bottom of the ones on megachords, they show you where to put your fingers. Then you can play tons of songs that way. And after you get some of the basic chords down (C,A,G,D,Em,Am,F) you can pick up songs easily. I did my school's talent show and coffeehouse (with my friend on lead vocals) using megachords' songs. (We did Fearless by Taylor Swift, Over My Head by the Fray and Old School by Hedley)

I'd start on an acoustic, they're less expensive in case you don't end up liking it. =) I still have my basic guitar from when I first started. Another thing you might want to do is go to a local guitar store to ask the people there some questions =)

Good luck! Guitar is amaaaazing and so much fun to play.:cutie:

thank you soo much...yeah i would use my friends guitar and it is acuistic and thanks for the website it is AWESOME! did youknow how to read music before you started? Was it hard to learn?

Nope, I knew NOTHING about reading music before I started (I still don't... the megachords ones are lyrics with chords on top of them). It's pretty easy to pick up. After a while your fingers just know where to go and you're all set =]

I took lessons for 2 months, I think it was. I stopped because, well I'm shy and I found it really hard to perform with the tutor watching me. Like has already been mentioned check guitar websites (esp. Tab ones where they have the ones where you hover over the chord and it shows them as they have helped me alot...but I will add abit about this in a moment). A really good method alot of people I used to know use was listening to music by ear, like they listen to one of their favourite songs and they try and try until they could play along with the song...obviously this one can be harder but it does help in sort of creative way haha.

I'd also say don't stick any one genre either, learn bit from each. I'm primarily a "hard" rock guitarist but alot of my influence comes from classical music....so experimenting with genres is good :).
