I tried teaching myself.... it went nowhere

I'm in my second year of guitar instructed (I take private lessons at my local music studio once a week for 1/2 an hour) and I looove it. But my teacher is super hot and really good at teaching me stuff.
If you really want to self-teach, I'd try looking online for some guitar tabs (megachords.com is my favourite chord site). At the bottom of the ones on megachords, they show you where to put your fingers. Then you can play tons of songs that way. And after you get some of the basic chords down (C,A,G,D,Em,Am,F) you can pick up songs easily. I did my school's talent show and coffeehouse (with my friend on lead vocals) using megachords' songs. (We did Fearless by Taylor Swift, Over My Head by the Fray and Old School by Hedley)
I'd start on an acoustic, they're less expensive in case you don't end up liking it. =) I still have my basic guitar from when I first started. Another thing you might want to do is go to a local guitar store to ask the people there some questions =)
Good luck! Guitar is amaaaazing and so much fun to play.
