How does someone get into a resort if they're visiting friends there? We'll be at OKW in a GV. Friends staying in Orlando want to come over to join us for dinner one evening. Do we have to notify the guard shack to let them in, or do they just tell the guard that they're visiting us and give our room number?

Corroborating what Michael says, yes, they just need to give the guard the name of the primary guest and your room number. The guard may or may not ask for photo ID - I usually have mine ready to hand over, to speed things up if they do ask.

Piggybacking off of this question - we have a similar circumstance but we are not dining at our resort. Assuming it's ok for our guests to ride on Disney transportation to other resorts for dinner?

Except for resorts on the Friendship Boats, Skyliner and Monorail line, resort to resort transportation requires going to a theme park or Disney Springs first.

Yes, your guests can ride on Disney transportation even if not staying at a Disney resort hotel. Once on property, everyone is considered a guest of the Walt Disney World Resort in the larger sense.
