Guess We'll Be Renting...

Sorry, but I don't understand his reluctance. The only rational objection is not thinking you will use it, obviously you will. The only other thing is hearing from people who have experience owning, well you got that right here.

C'mon, its not like we are a bunch of strangers!

now do you understand why my DW stopped me from buying MORE!!! points?

LOL! Sounds like you wife is keeping you from "saving" the family right into the poorhouse! ;) I agree that if the extra money is available, DVC points are a great purchase. But, you've got to avoid shopaholic syndrome with the points. :)

I know, and it really was a joint decision (she wouldn't stop me if I really wanted to buy more), but I honestly can't take any more Vacation time than I have been. We have 400 points, have a december use-year, and have not only used up our 2002 alotment that we get in December, but we have used most of our 2003 alotment for trips planed in Feb and May!!!!! I am not being a shopaholic, more a DisneyVacationAholic. DW doesn't seem to mind that part.;)

I don't think I will sell my stock portfolio just yet;), but I can say that my DVC is doing better than it, and I get free vacations.....:p what more could one ask for?

seriously, we have enough points for our immediate vacation needs, and the only reason I would buy more is to rent them out to pay for the annual fees.
:bounce:

Steph,

Here is another option. I don't know how you do family finances in your house, but if you have some of your own money, you buy DVC. If you don't have some of your own money, find a way to get some of your own money. This method has worked wonderously for my sister (not DVC, but they've been to Europe twice on her allowance).

There are people who finance their DVC purchases/Disney vacations with a part time job - and their spouse looks on.

I think all your husband's objections are fair. Renting is a good way to try things out. The only disadvantage to not buying NOW is that prices increase - and will continue to increase. And that the hotel bill for your Disney vacation will be money down the drain. But you will still be able to buy in next year, or the year after, five or ten years from now.

I am hoping that the investment pays off in about 8 years but I like to be conservative and estimate 10.

Thanks for the advise.

Hey BarbOKW, be careful what you ask for; where do you think DVCLANDBARN got his handle.....:o

Sounds like he doesn't even want to hear about it buying, what a bummer! :-(

I think you should leave him alone for a little while....then, when the timing is right....bring it up again.
Persistence, persistence, persistence. It always pays off.

Best of luck!
Shontell

As wonderful as DVC is, it is not worth a big fight with your DH. If he's adamant, you're probably not going to change his mind by continually bringing it up (even if you don't agree with his reasons).

If it were me, I'd definitely back off for awhile - until the next trip to WDW. I'd rent points for a 1 bedroom at the DVC resort you think your DH would enjoy the most. Then I'd just keep my mouth shut until he realizes what you got for your $$. That's when you bring it up again. If he still says no, DVC isn't going to happen for you.

And if that is what happens, it will be OK. You can have a good life without DVC. Sometimes those of us who post here get our priorities out of whack where DVC is concerned. We're not always the most objective bunch.

Best wishes and good luck!

I think buying DVC is like having kids....if you wait for a "perfect" time you're never going to do it!

That's why I bought.

(I decided I'd wait until the "perfect" time on the having kids thing though!;) )

Don't feel bad my DH said the same thing. What we do is rent points and we go every other year. It is a great way to stay at BWV and not have the added expense.

Steph: My husband gave me the big "NO WAY" after I presented him with all the DVC materials. We had stayed at BWV and loved it; but he did not want to front the money for DVC. I talked to other family members for input and they ALL thought I was nuts!!!

Well to make a long story short, I used my OWN money to purchase 220 points at BWV. Took all the doubters on vacation
(2 BR at BWV)....they all fell in love with the resort and have been back with us a couple of times....

By the way, when all of their stocks plummeted this past year, I was able to gloat that at least I had taken some of my money and purchased something that would last 40+ years :p
