Booked 6 B GTY 21 days before sailing... got room assignment as soon as i checked in that night... any chance we could be gifted an upgrade? Has this happened to anyone.. had room assignment changed at last minute? we like our room ok just know there are some 4A and 4B left

We've had our room changed at the last minute a couple of times but not because we booked GTY; in fact, we had booked a specific room. Twice we were simply moved further down the deck to the same category so I can only assume that our original room was out of service for some reason. Just because there are empty cat 4's, there's no reason that they would upgrade you if they've already assigned you a room this close to sailing.

I’ve had it changed the day of the cruise. I assume the original room(s) were taken out for some kind of maintenance.

Other than that, upgrade at the port would be your only option.

Unless your assigned room requires last minute maintenance, do not expect an upgrade. The only known reason they upgrade a GTY booking is if the party’s composition make them go over lifeboat capacity. If they assigned you to a room already, they know you won’t get them in trouble in relation to that and you’ll remain there. The empty cabins will be used for port upgrades, at a cost.

thanks.. thats the information i was looking for... this is our first time booking GTY... so excited!

We often book GTY because we're happy to save money and book a GTY for the level we would have chosen.
Just to be clear... a number-letter category at GTY is not particularly a discounted rate, but you are allowing DCL to assign the stateroom in that specific category or higher (usually that specific category).

A *GT booking, like a VGT Verandah Guarantee with Restrictions, is a discounted fare. It also shows as "GTY" for the room assignment, and you may be assigned any stateroom in the broader category (verandah, oceanview, interior).

Upgrades aren’t super common with GTY. Most people get the category they booked ie 11b, 6b etc and if Disney has already assigned your room it’s probably going to stay that way. If you want an upgrade you’ll probably need to ask at the port and pay for it.

Upgrades and room changes were more commons during the restart when Disney was keeping rooms available for quarantine etc but it’s been awhile since we’ve seen much of that.

I should have been clear, we've done both. We have always paid less with a GTY than with choosing our own room. But the IGT/OGT/VGT are usually bigger discounts.

Hmm that’s interesting. I’ve never seen a situation where a specific category such as 11b etc was available to select a room and also as GTY. I thought the whole point of GTY was that that category was almost full so you couldn’t select a specific room. I haven’t seen a choice between the two.

We have saved money with GTY in the sense that we could still book the lower category instead of going up a tier to pick our room.

We have definitely booked Inside GTY when we could also have selected our room. We've done that three times. Once got assigned an oceanview, accessible room. Once got an inside room, as expected. Once got assigned an inside, accessible room that changed to a verandah, accessible room at port.
Our other three cruises we chose specific rooms because we were travelling with others.
Our upcoming cruise is our first IGT, we haven't gotten a room assignment yet, we're still 16 days out.

Inside GTY isn’t a gty category though so what probably happened is you picked a specific category like 11b that was in gty status but could have picked your room if you’d chosen 11a etc. so selecting GTY does save money but not because there’s a discount. The savings there isn’t because of the GTY it’s because it’s a lower category. It’s the GT rates that are only divided by inside, ocean view or verandah.

That's not the same as booking 11B GTY or 10A GTY. These usually appear once X% of the 11B rooms have been booked, DCL shifts to 11B GTY where you cannot select a stateroom. The fare is actually higher than those who booked earlier and got to choose their room. There isn't usually an option of 11B GTY vs 11B choose your stateroom.

Inside GTY is an IGT, which is a discounted fare. It's not a set % off so some cruises may be more deeply discounted than others.

The confusion for some newer cruisers may come from how the website now lists fares. You have to click through inside, oceanview or verandah and then choose forward, mid or aft before the actual number-letter category shows.

Wait.....what?
We booked a Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom with Restrictions ,Category VGT (Stateroom GTY)

Are you saying we could receive any verandah in the broader category of verandahs? Just wanted to make sure you didn't mean we could be bumped down to an oceanview or interior.

not to confuse anyone but when i booked there was one room available in that cat. and to me the least desirable one...so 6 B GTY was available at same cost so i thought what the heck ...got nothing to lose and everything to gain:) ...we have booked *GT before but this is first time booking GTY. we are excited to be sailing and are not treally concerned about the assignment...

If you booked a VGT verandah guaranteed with restrictions you will get a verandah.

I’ve never seen a situation where a specific category such as 11b etc was available to select a room and also as GTY.
I saw that recently when we booked our Wish cruise in January. I was surprised to see that I could have booked a cat 6 GTY as well as have also been able to book the specific cabin (can't remember if it was 6B or 6A, just remembered that it was a cat 6 but it wasn't like one was 6A and one was 6B), though the price differential was less than $10. We ended up booking VGT, which was $500 less than picking our own room in 6B, so it wasn't relevant for me, but I was wondering why anyone would book GTY when you could pick your room in the same category, and there wasn't really a discount at all. It wasn't a simple temporary glitch either because it was listed for a couple of weeks before we finally booked. I'm still not sure I see the point of it.

I booked a VGT at the same time that I could have booked specific Cat 5 or Cat 4A or B GTY staterooms on the Magic.

We sail in 9 days and still no stateroom assigned which is the closest to sailing we have ever gone without a room assigned to us. We have never been disappointed in our VGT room assignment! One time on the Dream we got room 10500! We liked it so much that we purposely booked that on a subsequent sailing on the Fantasy!

When we booked we could have had VGT (any verandah), a specific cat 5 stateroom, or a Cat 4B GTY or a Cat 4A GTY.

So I chose VGT as it was the cheapest by 35% off the Cat 5 rate for a specific stateroom.
