Yep, that's me right now, Grumpy. I'm becoming jaded regarding all the
messages on this board looking to make WDW trips "more special" for someone. "What can I do to make my 10yo DDs bday trip special?" "what can I do to make my FILs first visit special?"

Have people taken so many WDW trips that they forget that it's special just to be there? Why all the threads about needing more? Is this also indicative of our society - that things that used to be so far out of reach for so many have become necessities or commonplace, and we need even more?

Good grief, Charlie Brown, let's get real and remember that for 99.5% of the world, just BEING THERE would be a wonderful, special moment. Don't set you or your family up for needing MORE to have the trip be SPECIAL!

End of rant...

I gotta say I agree with ya.
My trip is a Bday present for my daughter who has never been to WDW. I havent been there for about 25 years. I started this adventure on a whim. Then I got crazy about it. Thinking I need to do something special every day of the trip for her. After about a week of going nuts. I asked her if there was anything she wanted to do special. Her answer.... Yea Dad I wanna have FUN!

I stopped all the planning at that point. I have returned to a normal disney dad again.
Whew thank god for little girls..

To each his or her own, I suppose. Don't let it get to you! I don't think anyone would argue that being in WDW is special. It's so wonderful!

well....i can understand. It's Disney. It's special. I totally agree. I think that in some people's cases they are just so excited about the trip they want to amke sure their family is going to be that excited and they dont want the trip as a bust.

For instance....we are going in about a month ...hubby, my son 18mo, my mom, grandmother, brother and sister-n-law. Now myself, my grandmother, and my mom...we are disney nuts and I know they'll have a great time. My brother, is happy to go...but he's just more laid back. And thats okay....I want everyone to have a great time and get some nice memories out of the trip. It's a week before his 30th birthday and to be honest, I am looking to do something "special" for his birthday. He lives in NY and I only get to see him like 2 times a year. I dont think its anything to get upset about. Like another poster said...to each his own.

I'm sure for many people on dis, just being there is still special. I know it is for me and my family. But, I also understand some people have been there lots more times than I have and want to do the extra stuff Disney offers and want to show family members things that not all visitors see or do. I've been twice, both times with small children. And I will have small children with me on my next trip. So, I am still learning and enjoying the basic parks. I hope to go enough someday to do and notice all the extras. I don't begrudge others wanting to do something special. And, I'll still enjoy the fact that going to Disney itself is special for me and my family.

Not that this will make you feel any better but right now I am Grumpy on Steroids...I have a new baby who is not sleeping through the night and a hubby that wont get up and take a turn..that and a demanding 6yr old veying for my attention over the new baby...my hair is a mess..legs need shaved, no make up on, house looks like a bomb hit it and into the bargain Im trying to organise a trip to Disney!!!! For some strange reason I cant get into the "fluffy bunny mood"..just the "death to everyone" mood. Right now I would sell my soul for an hours sleep....so you are not Grumpy alone my dear..welcome to the club.:flower3:

I totally agree with the OP, the questions on here get pretty bad. The 'give-me-more' attitude usually ends up with the person coming back discouraged and even angry that there were no towel animals, no free cupcakes all week for a birthday that was a month before the trip, etc. They set themselves up for disappointment, get unpleasant, and wonder why the rest of the family had a lousy time!

We were at WDW when my oldest DD turned 8. We let her pick one thing from a giftshop for a present, and she picked which park to go to, which ride to go on first. That was it! I think we just stuck candles (that I brought along) in whatever dessert she got that night with dinner. We were just thrilled to be able to be at WDW with 14 other family members.

I loved reading this post. It puts things in perspective. Thanks for sharing.

I know I'm new here and all, but I think I've seen some of the things you're talking about. Especially on the dining and resort boards, it seems, there are a lot of people who expect to be surprised with "pixie dust." Well, if you expect it, it's not really a surprise, now, is it, lol? I can understand wanting to plan some "extras," but I do think some people get carried away with it all. It's not like the trip will be ruined if they don't get a wave from a diver at dinner or a "free" dessert.

Well I somewhat agree. But on our last trip I had several suprises and special "things" planned. But they were all researched and FREE!!! Never knew so many cool things at The World were free (or next to it!)
But I totally agree, some people go WAY overboard. Spending silly amounts of money on "stuff".

:thumbsup2 I think too many times we forget that for our kids, at least, just being there is the "special" part. They just want to go and have fun.

On our trip in November, about half way through the week, DH asked DD what her favorite part of the trip was so far. She said, "being with you and momma".

Needless to say, he melted right there and immediately started deciding when we would return. :goodvibes

When does it get better? Almost two years later... And still waiting for some sanity! Luckily I have found some here on the DIS:)

On the topic... I think Disney is feeding in too much on the CELEBRATIONS theme. What are you celebrating is sort of over the top. It used to be precious milestones now it's a third anniversary, your childs four and a half year mark, the dogs fifth birthday! It is a bit insane. Just go have a great time at Disney. I think that being able to take time off to spend a week or more with your family is special enough without having to throw in gifts each day and other special surprises.
