Grrr... Passenger Vessels Services Act

This is all really fascinating to me. I never really thought about the law, just knew that it existed and that was the way things were. It would be nice to have it gone to do round trips to Hawaii without going anywhere else or from Florida to New York. As someone who doesn't like flying I'd totally take advantage of this.
 
The PSVA is the precedence for the laws preventing cabotage in the airline industry, which is a much bigger American industry that would be impacted by the allowing of cheaper (and often nationally subsidized) competitors into the domestic market. It would also open up precedence for foreign rail competition.

That's a slippery slope argument I don't buy. It's not like legal precedent. Nothing is going to compel Congress to drop protections for airlines just because they've dropped protections for cruise ships. Especially when one has a domestic industry and the other does not.
