Groupon- canceling a reservation?

I have the opportunity to purchase a hotel reservation through Groupon for a reasonable price. The "fine print" says it's cancelable up to 48 hours before check-in. I think this is a pretty good price but I also think that I can probably get something on hotwire cheaper, as my travel date gets closer. I'm thinking of purchasing the Groupon now and then looking at Hotwire about a week before traveling, and maybe canceling Groupon. Has anyone canceled a purchased Groupon hotel reservation? Is it easy to do, or is it a pain?

I've done it. It is easy to do. All you have to do is login to your groupon account and when you go to your account you should see your reservation, or a spot for your reservation. I believe there should be a "cancel" button underneath. It will also tell you how many days you have left to cancel before it's non-refundable. The money gets credited back to your card pretty quickly, but i don't remember how long it actually took.

Thanks! That's exactly the answer I was hoping to find! Groupon has a good rate on a DC hotel for this summer (about 50% off rack) but on a Hotwire board I discovered that someone got the same hotel last summer, for our travel dates, for about half of what Groupon is offering. I am tempted to purchase the Groupon but then cancel it if I get a good Hotwire deal closer to our travel time... but wasn't going to bother if Groupon makes cancellations a pain.

I'd say go for it! At least that way if you don't get the Hotwire deal you're hoping for, you already have something in place. Hope you have a great trip!
