HI, My DH and I quit smoking 2 weeks ago and decided we need to try to eat better,so we would not gain bunches of unwanted weight. So, i went to the grocery store and got all fat free or low fat things to eat and got some Ground turkey and dont know how to fix it LOL.Can someone please help me with this? What should i fix for dinner using the turkey? Also, Can someone please tell me what it tastes like?I am real worried LOL.
Thanks,
Misty

Hi Misty! Post #1000, didja notice that?

Congrats on quitting smoking!

I like to use ground turkey to make tacos and casseroles, or Hambutger Helper. In those things, it almost seems the same as ground beef. My friend makes turkey burgers, but I have not tried that. I have BOUGHT pre-made frozen turkey burgers and I really like them.

good luck on your new healthy lifestyle!!

My family uses ground turkey in anything that would normally call for ground beef. I've gotten so I can't even taste the difference anymore.

When you cover it with a sauce, it tastes a bit like ground meat. I CAN taste the "turkey" taste, but turkey is my favorite meat so that's ok by me. It's very subtle. It SMELLS like turkey when you cook it. I think you'll like it. I certainly do. Try it as tacos!!!

Well i made Turkey burgers and they were Awesome,i will not be using hamburger meat anymore.I also made the twice baked garlic potatoes from the WW recipe.

See... I told you you'd like it! Did you add spices or just use the meat plain?

Just make sure you get the lowfat ground turkey breast. A lot of times they use meat other than the breast, and it's actually more fattening and you think you are eating healthier.

If you had a meat grinder, you could ground your own.

I also use turkey sausage (again look for the lower fat versions). Perdue makes a mild italian turkey sausage that is low in fat. I have an awesome recipe that has penne noodles, parmesean cheese, broccoli and the sausage. My husband was so skeptical about trying the turkey sausage, but it tastes great!

Hope this helps some. If anyone wants it, I can find that recipe later and post it.

Hey, Melanie C! Great site for Waukesha Memorial Hospital ! Found some awesome recipes there. Ine for hummus I'm gonna try tomorrow. Thanks!

I always add a bit more garlic to the ground turkey when I brown it up. But my family prefers the Perdue Ground Chicken. It's all white meat, and I just brown it up (using the garlic again!) and add Classico sauce and let it simmer for a few minutes. Then serve it over any kind of pasta you have.

It is far more low fat than ground beef.

Keep an eye out for "lean" ground turkey. Regular ground turkey is 45 cal/oz with 2.5 g of fat. Lean ground turkey has 10% fewer calories and 20% less fat.

If you notice your turkey meat no matter how you prepare it taste a little dry - and onions to it - it adds extra moisture and keeps them moist - and if you really don't like turkey meat(ground) try mixing/cooking it first w/some beef boulion - just watch the sodium - I buy beef base(at Sams club) by TONES and 1tsp of the base is 37% of your daily sodium intake:eek: but it makes my DH like the Turkey more and this makes a whole cup of broth which I use in about 2lbs of ground turkey which is a good 8 servings depending on what I make w/it.

Waukesha Memorial Hospital is the best hospital!! DW used their birthing centers. The rooms were like being in a hotel. We were bummed with the last DD as they were building a new wing with better rooms, etc.... Not quite enough to make us want another one. :)
