See, this is why I hate watching the news some times. Did anyone else see this story on world news tonight that 70% of the country's ground beef contains this "pink slime" which is actually dog food grade beef that's been sprayed with ammonia?

I can't image this is new, am I late in knowing this?

Gerald Zirnstein grinds his own hamburger these days. Why? Because this former United States Department of Agriculture scientist and, now, whistleblower, knows that 70 percent of the ground beef we buy at the supermarket contains something he calls “pink slime.”

“Pink slime” is beef trimmings. Once only used in dog food and cooking oil, the trimmings are now sprayed with ammonia so they are safe to eat and added to most ground beef as a cheaper filler.

Yummy! :scared: ....I don't eat meat much.....rarely. i may go back to never. blech.

ABC World News is about to talk about it in a little bit.

It's been all over the news here too. Gross! I don't eat meat but I'm still grossed out.

That's another reason why I prefer to buy my ground beef only from places that grind their own. I won't buy ground beef from places where it's prepacked.

I have recently switched to only grass fed beef from a local farmer. It tastes so much better, and there are no antibiotics or hormones. Less fatty too!

I bought 1/8 of a cow and buying it that way I paid about $4.29/lb, which means I even paid $4.29/lb for the steaks! :woohoo:

Eww! The news said the beef "trimmings" were actually some sort of gelatin. :crazy2:

Some woman kept saying, "It's beef. It's beef. It's all beef, so why is there a reason to label it?"

Umm. . . maybe because if all the ammonia sprayed on it?

Thank fast food chains and the mantra of "convenience" for this any many other things related to the food industry.

Consider watching the documentary Food, Inc.

That's why we only buy Organic meat.

We have a meat grinder we hardly ever use. Guess what? It just paid for itself!

I heard that the fast food giants have agreed not to use the pink slime anymore, but not to worry - all that pink slime is heading to a school near you.
I'm glad my kid packs his lunch.

I saw this on Jaime Oliver's show last year. He did a little demo explaining what pink slime is. It was so gross. I haven't been able to eat hamburg unless I know where its from. It sucks because every once in a while, I crave a Big Mac. I haven't eaten a burger in a restaurant since that episode aired. Luckily the grocery store I go to grinds their own. I just have to buy the hamburg in the leaky packaging. It is ground and packaged instore. I won't touch that pre-packaged stuff.

We have the deer and bear that we harvest (locally) taken to a local butcher, who does not do this. It's so lean that we actually have to have it mixed with a little pork. At least we know what we're eating...

How do you know they don't put the pink slime into the leaky packages? Can pink slime be sold to supermarket butchers? :crazy2:

It's so nauseating. Thankful we have been getting our beef from a local farmer. Grass fed, no hormones or antibiotics. Yum!

I know because I know people who work in the store (whom I trust are honest with me) that have told me the hamburg is ground instore and is just the ground meat.

There were a number of markets that said they do not use this filler
Costco
whole food
and a few others (I can't remember) who said they make sure to only buy beef without this filler. Looks like I'm going to have to investigate my local farmers market.
