Groovin' at Grumpy's Grotto! The Final Chapter-With Thanks to All

The house and pool look great, unbelievable grocery shop :rotfl2:

I'm already looking at putting in a delivery order for October! I'm going to avoid that place at all costs!

OH My Goodness! I'm so glad you and your family got out of the house safely! Your poor lungs and Kirby. Your neighbors sound like rats. At least someone from around your neighborhood came to help watch your children. What a horrible couple of days before the magic! :grouphug:

Thanks. Luckily we had Disney to throw some magic are way to distract us from all the misfortune the week before.

Your children sound so well behaved. You must be a great Mom. :thumbsup2 Congradulations. I love how you've named them all (and yourself) after the Seven Dwarfs. Very cute.

Can wait to read more! Thanks for writting! :cheer2:
They have their moments, believe me. You'll see. :lmao:

subscribing....you are an amazing women...five kids?! i don't think i could do it. props to you!! btw...your kids are adorable... :) can't wait for more.

Thanks! Wait until you hear our Tomorrow Land Speedway trouble! :headache:

Welcome home! I can't wait to hear about your day at MK.

Denise
Thanks! Today, promise! :)

Sunday-MK

My kids are up at 5am. It feels like Christmas morning. It is so funny to overhear the upstairs chatter as the kids talk about their plans. My eldest daughter is determined to find Jack Sparrow. My youngest son wants to ride Buzz. The baby keeps chanting, "Donuts, donuts, donuts." :)

At 6am I finally roll out into the family room and tell them it's okay to come downstairs and grab some breakfast. The house has a nice kitchen nook and bar area and the kids all grab a seat. Sugary delights of Poptarts, grapes, milk, and of course, donuts are gobbled up too quickly.

I spread out three different shirts and ask for a vote. Today will be our Florida sea critters shirts. It isn't even 7 and we are ready for the park!

Now arrives a continuing theme in our vacation (and lives). Now I've planned the vacation for months, packed, prepared, and worked myself into a lather about this trip. My husband, on the other hand, only had to show up. He is an engineer (need I say more?) The most stereotypical one out there. He is like Jerry Lewis in the Nutty Professor. His mind is always going off in a thousand directions, so I've learned to make most of my requests in writing. :lmao: My fellow DISers will understand. We must follow Momma's plan. We will now observe how Daddy will throw daily roadblocks in said plan.

We are in the van and off by 7:20. Now that I have everyone captured in a confinded space, I ask for everyone's attention. I go over all of my park powerpoints...stay together...proper etiquette when you find yourself lost...stay together...be kind to your siblings...stay together...take turns...stay together. Yes, I'm freaking out about losing someone. I'm imagining huge crowds of blue mega strollers plowing through my family and dividing us up into a sea of strangers. Then comes the discussion about "the laters". Everyone knows these...gift shops later...food later...characters later...your choice later. :thumbsup2

I chant the order of the rides we would conquer. I tell my husband (for the hundredth time) his fastpass duties. I go over queue rules and secret paths and..... I not watching where I'm driving and I follow the CMs to their parking lot! :headache: The guard tells me I have to drive all the way around and start all over. I turn around in the Poly parking lot and head back to the parking lot booths. It takes us 15-20 minutes behind a wall of buses to get where we are supposed to be. We park, pay for our tickets, and head to the monorail. I can't believe how crowded it is already and it is not even 8am! It is standing room only in the monorail and I'm busy trying to keep multiple kids on their feet. Of course we are not on the Express, so we have to stop and wait at the hotels.
mkropedrop.jpg

disneyropedrop2.jpg

We make it through security and the ticket turnstiles very easily. They are holding us at the tunnels, but there isn't a huge crowd yet. We have 30 minutes until opening. A CM is out passing out stickers and before we know it, Mickey and the gang are getting off the train to greet us! I grab my handy camcorder to capture all the magic and immediately find out my husband did not insert the battery back at the house.   Now I'm going to be carrying around a useless camcorder all day. I try to take some digital photos, but the humidity and the crowd make it impossible. Thankfully the rope is dropped and we are off!

mkkids.jpg

We make it to Main Street and get our first glimpse of the castle! The kids are jumping up and down and I'm getting misty. But even the castle can't have me forget my plan! Head for Tomorrowland! I tell my husband to head to Space Mountain pronto for fastpasses. He tells me he doesn't know where it is. I tell him to follow the crowd, but he won't budge. We reach Buzz. We ditch the stroller and jump on! Buzz is great example of what made Disney perfect for us. We could all get on and enjoy it. From 46 years old to 3 years old, we had a blast! Anna got the high score by a mile. She would later confess days later than she saw a tip on a Disney show on the travel channel and knew where to hit for the best points. Smart girl. :lmao: I was able to now physically point my husband in the direction of Space Mountain. He went off to get the fastpasses (finally) and we headed to Astro Orbiter. Absolutely no one was there. We rode up to elevator and climbed aboard. Boy, does that thing go fast! The CM told us we could keep riding until others arrived. The baby and I said no thanks, but I told the older 4 they could ride again one time. I told them when the ride ended they would meet us at the bottom of the elevator. My husband quickly rejoined Holly and I with the fastpasses and we waited. And waited. And waited. Those darn kids were never getting off. I finally told my husband to go and retrieve them. They were burning daylight on that ride and messing up Momma's plan. We waited another 10 minutes. Finally they appeared. Dad explained they were still on the ride and about to go up when he arrived. He decided just to ride it himself and they would all come down after. :rotfl:

mksm.jpg

We headed to Monster's Inc Laugh Factory. Monster's Inc is one of my favorite movies, next to The Incredibles, so I was eager to see it. The theater wasn't even halfway filled. I was amazed how low the crowds were still. Where did all these people go from rope drop? Our fastpasses were usable now, so we divided the kids up. I took the first group. We walked right up to our space capsule and was zooming through the stars in minutes! Absolutely fantastic! I've been waiting to ride SM since I was a teenager! We switched and the second group with Dad were back quickly. We headed to Fantasyland next. We rode the Tea Cups, Pooh, Snow White, and the Carousel a couple of times.

My eldest son, Will, could not get the Speedway out of his head. I had already explained that it would be impossible for us to ride it. The height restrictions allowed him to ride it alone, but an adult would have to be with the other kids. Two adults and four kids doesn't work, but no explaining would satisfy him. Will has some autistic characteristics (like Dad) and I wasn't comfortable letting him ride alone anyway. We tried to explain that we would ride it in October when the aunts and grandparents would be with us, but I could see we were headed for a nuclear meltdown. We had grabbed fastpasses for Philharmagic early into Fantasyland and our return time was near. We dragged Will away from the Speedway and were at the doors of the theater in minutes. He started to have a minor tantrum that we were quickly able to stop by promises of ice cream. I know, bribing is bad, but desperate times call for desperate measures. :thumbsup2

mkicecream.jpg

mkicecream2.jpg

Philharmagic was the most awesome experience! We all LOVED it! We sat down in front of Snow White and had fantastic ice cream cones. We jumped on Pooh again and headed to see Pooh and Tigger. They had to go on break right when we got in line. It was now the baby's turn to have a tantrum. We decided that it was time for a break and headed to the exit. We tried to stop at the barber shop for some much needed haircuts for my sons, but they were way too busy. With promises of swimming and haircuts outside the park we hopped on the monorail.

mkfirstday.jpg
We walked back to our van and realized how close we were to the TTC. Our little detour with the CMs didn't cost us as much as we had thought. The sky was black by then with a fast moving thunderstorm. We literally shut the doors of the van before it started to rain like crazy. A huge storm was on upon us. Swimming would have to wait. I told the kids how quickly storms pass in Florida, I used to live there years ago. Ha. It was still pouring at 5pm. Not just raining, but lots of thunder and even hail. We decided just to stay home that evening (our plan was a nice dinner out). I drove down a couple of flooded blocks to the Taco Bell and grabbed dinner. It was another early night because we planned for a big day at Epcot in the morning. Everyone was asleep by 9pm dreaming of Nemo and Crush!

Next Chapter--Getting Trampled in the Soarin Stampede! :scared1:

Great update with pics! We were in that rainstorm at MGM...and we were soaking wet! It was horrible!!! Glad you were able to get out of it!

Thanks. The storm was incredible. What did you do inside MGM during the storm? Were the shows cancelled?

Thanks. The storm was incredible. What did you do inside MGM during the storm? Were the shows cancelled?

We were in Indiana Jones when it started...and they cancelled the show. so, we waited a few minutes and then came out into the gift shop by Indiana. Then...it started hailing really hard and was a torrential downpour. so, we stayed in the gift shop for about an hour sitting on the floor...the rain let up slightly and we decided to make a run for it. Got to the buses and had to wait 45 minutes in the pouring rain. We were SOAKED!!!! It was not fun...at ALL!!!

Chapter 4-Monday 6/11-Epcot at Ropedrop

The title really says it all! We were up, dressed, fed, and at the park by 8:15. I was so excited about this day because I thought Epcot was going to be the perfect park for my entire family. Dad and the boys would have scientific things to immerse themselves in. The girls would enjoy Chip N Dale at the Garden Grille. And the baby would have her Nemo!

So we eagerly rushed to the park in our red matching World Showcase shirts to wait 45 minutes at the turnsiles. :headache: The crowd was quickly building. I was so suprised because this was supposed to be the best Epcot day of the week. I went over our plan again. Dad reluctantly agreed to grab us some fastpasses for Soarin. We would follow in hopes of getting on without too much of a wait. We were through the gate a few minutes to 9am and found ourselves behind the rope at the first fountain. There were a couple of characters saying good morning, but everyone around us seemed to be clearly focused on one mission....get to Soarin! There were a few (probably veterans) to the left, waiting to get to Test Track, but the masses seem to be heading in our planned direction.

Then the rope was dropped. No walking the rope, like the books say, just a mighty free-for-all to The Land. I grabbed as many kids as I could, but we were soon swept up in the sea of humanity as it lunged for Soarin. I was getting heeled by strollers, grabbing tripping kids, and holding on to my own stroller for dear life! I yelled for my husband to wait and tried to move my family out of the amoeba-like organism that was making it across the bridge. I told him that we were bound to lose someone and I better let him brave it alone and get the fastpasses. The kids and I would wait by the bridge for his return. He wasn't happy with me, but he jumped into the human river towards the building. The kids turned to me in frustration. Why did we have to wait? How long would it take him? In my haste to get out of the crowd I didn't realize we could have just went along to The Seas and met him there. Now I couldn't call him and change things now. He probably had his phone off anyway. (he doesn't like to talk on the phone) We waited almost 30 minutes for him to return. The crowd reminded me of my many travels to China. The Land area looked like Beijing at lunch time, just without bikes.

The kids as we wait.

epthewait.jpg

He tells us of the trials of his fastpass retrieval. I'm not really listening because I have 5 angry kids wanting some Nemo. I vaguely remember talk of people yelling "go, go,go" in the fastpass line.....40 minute standby waits at 9:10, etc. :headache:

nemo1.jpg
nemo3.jpg

eptheseas.jpg
We make our way to The Seas and hop on a clamshell to see our little guy, Nemo. The kids loved it, even the dark areas. Everyone wants to head to the dolphins, but I'm still thinking about my ever-changing plan. I tell them that the aquariums will have to wait, we must get to Crush. We sit by the stingray tanks for 20 minutes with a big crowd wanting to see the first show of Crush. Luckily we get in and get seats. The show is so cute, but my kids are disappointed they didn't speak to Crush. We then take our time exploring the building, watching the manatees, dolphins, and various fish. Our family really enjoyed The Seas.

Here are my photopass pictures of Bruce. I was so disappointed when I saw these. Could he get any closer? I wish I had taken some of my own.

bruce4.jpg

bruce1.jpg

Now came decision time. Our fastpasses were valid now. Had it calmed down any at The Land? Quick answer...NO. What a madhouse! I had hoped we would split up into groups, one going on Soarin, the other riding The Land ride. Ha. The Land line was all the way to the Soarin entrance. It had to be almost a hour wait. We decided the second group would just wait. My youngest son and middle daughter would go first with me. I was very worried about this arrangement, because my eldest doesn't do well with waiting. Neither does his father. But we had fastpasses, right? It wouldn't be long. It took us 40 minutes to get through. My son was crying at the exit waiting for me. He was in total nuclear meltdown mode. I tried to calm him and we all took a seat in a beyond packed Seasons Food Fair. They were all thirsty and hungry. We had ADRs for Garden Grille at 2. We were not going to make it. I ran upstairs and asked if we could get seated sooner. Nope. I ran back downstairs and said we would just eat at Seasons. I grabbed Chinese noodle bowls and mac n cheese. It was gone in seconds. We sat there and watched as the people continued to pour in. Everyone wanted to leave, but half of us had not been on Soarin yet. I talked up the ride like crazy and convinced the second group to go. We would sit tight and wait. And boy did we. It had to be almost 45 minutes before they returned. Luckily they were all smiles. :thumbsup2

We bolted for the door, eager to leave The Land behind. We wanted to stop at the character greet next, but it was over an hour wait. That wouldn't work. I decided to take my crew to Ellen's Energy since we probably would have no wait and needed an air conditioned break. AAAAAAAAAhhhhh. That is exactly what happened. It was fun. The younger kids especially loved it. Spaceship Earth was next. Absolutely no wait there either. We happily rode it twice. My middle daughter, Lily's favorite. It was hard to believe it was 2:30 now. The rain was approaching. We decided to call it a day and head home.

epcot2.jpg

Dad went with the boys for haircuts while it rained. Everyone hopped into the pool when the thunder had past. The pool was perfect. We were having such a good time that no one wanted to get out and dressed for dinner. I jumped out and got a couple party trays from Chick fil a. We dined by the pool and was off to an early bed.

Epcot still held some promise for us. We planned to return on Friday and hoped we would all have a better day. :goodvibes

Tomorrow was Animal Kingdom!

Next installment-Chapter 5-Yippee for the Yeti!

Ohhhhhhhh...we were at AK with you!!!!! It was so hot and sticky that day!

I can't believe you waited 40 minutes with fast passes to see Soarin.

Anyway, I am enjoying your TR. I just spent the last hour reading. Love the t-shirts. Did your kids ever get to school on their last day.

Did you recover from the smoke.

We rented a house the first year we went, and my kids loved the house with the pool more than anything else.

It was SO HOT!!! We probably bumped into each other! It was a tight squeeze down some of those paths!

The kids never made it. Dad stopped by after school to collect their grade cards. :sad1:

The smoke was horrible, but I felt instantly better when we got away from the house. I think it was more post-tramatic stress than anything else. We were worried that the house would still be smoky when we returned, but thankfully it is fine. The laundry room is still pitch black, but the cleaning crew came and cleaned the walls and floors. Now everything just needs a fresh coat of paint. :thumbsup2

We already booked the same house for our October trip. I'm so happy we went ahead and decided on this second trip. It eases the post-vacation pains.

Oh, I am so with you about desperate measures!! WDW is hyper-stimulating for all kids, but especially for those on the spectrum! :hyper:

I have been known to have used ice cream or cookies as bribes.

(They work well on me too!) ;)

Kathy

I love your writing style I almost felt as if I was with you in the Soarin crush! You all look so lovely in your matching shirts :goodvibes

We need to look into going during less busy times. I think we all would enjoy it more.

Thanks! I'm already busy on our Halloween designs for October. The shirts work out so well. It is easy to pick them out of a crowd. And we get great reactions from the CMs and guests. I made 49 shirts for our June vacation and it costs less than $100 to make them all!

I have enjoyed reading about your adventures! We took 4 kids in January, and although it is a lot of work, it is worth it when you see them smile!:)

Looking forward to more!

I was amazed that we did so well. I'm glad we waited until they were older. We have been wanting to do this trip for 5 years now. It would have been too difficult when I had 4 toddlers! :upsidedow

How did you pull that off? I just bought some iron-on stuff and shirts. The cheapest I found decent t-shirts were for $5 each. What am I missing? 5 shirts for 5 people at $5 each= yikes!

It's still not bad, but I could buy them at the outlet for that...

Chapter 5- Tuesday at AK rope drop!

We were up and in the car in plenty of time for rope drop. Unfortunately I tried to use the AK shortcut and got lost. We finally find the parking lot and boy, is it packed! This is the first time we have to take the tram to the entrance.

Now I can't really go into what happens next, confidentiality agreements and all that, but I can say it didn't work for us. The secret must be out because we were at no advantage over other guests. But, we make it inside eventually. :confused3 Boy, was it hot and steamy! It felt like a tropical sauna in the Oasis.

Cute haircuts, huh?

rainforestkids.jpg

Hubby is finally getting the hang of these fastpass runs and takes off towards Asia to get Everest fastpasses. The meeting place is going to be Dinoland and Tricerotops Spin. We slowly make our way there, but it is elbow to elbow and stroller to heel as we make it to our destination. The crowd clearly is heading to Asia and we find open spaces in Dinoland. I tell the older four to get in the Tri-Spin line as I get the baby out of the stroller. I enter the line to join them, but don't see them anywhere. I quickly find that I made a HUGE mistake in not dressing them in matching colors today. It was SO easy to pick them out in a bunch in days past, but now they are lost in a sea of children. I continue to wait with the baby, hoping I will catch a glimpse of them as I turn the corner in the queue. Still no kids. It is now our turn to ride and I quickly scan behind me to see if they got in line after me. Just as we are about to get on, I notice my middle daughter, Lily, walking around ALONE between Primeval Whirl and Tri-Spin. She is spinning around, obviously looking for a familiar face. I excuse myself off the ride before it begins and run to her. I find out that the kids immediately got on Spin, before I had even got the baby out of the stroller. My eldest son tells the younger three that it would be perfectly alright for them to hop in the Primeval Whirl queue while Holly and I rode Tri-Spin. Lily then chickened out of PW right before boarding and left the others. Lily, Holly, and I stood and watched PW, hoping to catch sight of them on the ride. We stood there for 10 minutes, looking at the ride and the exit. Still no kids. Fifteen minutes of waiting and I get tapped on the shoulder. It is the other three. They had rode PW and then hopped in the Tri-Spin line.

aktri.jpg

I was one mad Momma by then. I was deep into my park safety lecture when Dad appeared from Asia. I tried to regain focus on our plan and asked who wanted to ride Dinosaur. Only the 8 year olds wanted to ride, so I happily volunteered to join them. Dad would ride the Dinoland rides with the other three. The Dinosaur queue was awesome! The AC. The cool fossils. The AC. The AC. I'm telling you, it was hot! :rotfl:

Now I knew Dinosaur was intense, so I cautioned the kiddos during the wait and told them it would be best if they sat in the middle. We quickly got to our car and were seated in the front row. I begged Anna to switch with me, since she had an outside seat. She did at the last moment...and we were off. That ride is amazing! And loud. And bone rattling. And scary! I glanced at the kids and saw Anna covering her ears. Max was covering his eyes. I even covered my mouth at one point to stiffle an eruption of expleditives about to escape my lips! Anna had tears as we left and asked to sit down somewhere for a moment. We left the gift shop area quickly to find a seat, but not before I caught a glimpse of our ride photo. We looked like this...

hear_no_evil.jpg

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We united the family easily and started for Kali. I had our ponchos, but no one wanted one. The idea of getting wet sounded good. The stand-by line was short, so we jumped in line. The CM measured Holly and found her to be an inch short of what was required. He gave us a fastpass ticket for a second go around, so Dad waited with the baby and I took the others on. Kali had another amazing queue. I almost wished we didn't have to run through it, since there was no line. We boarded our raft with a family of three. We start off and the Mother says to me, "I'm sorry, but it looks like you are the one who is going to get soaked this time around". Boy, she wasn't kidding! I was completly drenched from top to toe! It felt good at the beginning, but it quickly got that clammy feel. Ugh, it was going to be a long day. We found Matt and Holly and I volunteered to wait this time. They took the fastpasses and hopped on. I was able to get some fantastic video from the Kali bridge! Anna was in the "wet" seat that time around.

It was off to Everest. Lily decided she couldn't do it, so Dad, Holly, and Lily went off to the Asia animal trail. We decided to meet back at Tri-Spin since we were all very acquinated with that area by now. They also were going to go by the Tree of Life to get fastpasses for It's Tough to be a Bug". We had 7 fastpasses, so it didn't look like we would be riding twice, since Will decided he was going to ride. I was very surprised by this and was hoping for the best. I found a group of three and offered them the extra fastpasses. Would you believe they glanced that the fastpasses and said back "these aren't any good" and tore them in two?? :confused3 They did it before I could even explain they were still good after the hour window. Some people. :confused3

I wish I would have brought the camcorder on EE. We literally walked right on with our fastpasses. We were in the last two rows of seats. The safety bar goes down and William starts to freak out. He is yelling to the CMs to let him go. He is yelling "goodbye cruel world" and "I'm going to die". It was hard to calm him down, I was laughing too hard. A nice CM comes over and tells him it isn't bad. She asks him what rides he has been on. I tell her Space Mountain and she explains that EE is a piece of cake compared to SM. We are off. Now the EE ride was great, not really for the thrills (I'm a seasoned roller coaster rider and EE was very tame), but for the hilarious lines coming out of my 9 year old son! "My life is pasing before my eyes!, "I have so much to live for!" , "Tell Cosmo and Newman (our cats) that I love them! :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl:

We are off EE and at our meeting place in 10 minutes flat. Dad thinks we will be much longer, so he and the girls go through the trail twice. They find they aren't giving away fastpasses today for "Bug". They stop by the Gibbons, the Oasis, random squirrels they pass on the trials...... We wait and bake. ..... I'm still soaked, but my clothes are quickly drying to stiff, scratchy coverings. William is now having one of his breakdowns. I find I made a huge mistake and have no phone (left it in the camera case when we rode Kali). I also have no money (also in camera case). We wait almost an hour on a hot sunny bench. Finally Dad and the girls appear. They looks happy and refreshed. Dad is so proud of himself....he even took some photos! Here is what I find when I get home....:rolleyes1

aklizard.jpg

Disney021.jpg

We have an ADR for Rainforest Cafe, but since we were there on Saturday we decide to skip it. We hop over to Restauraus and grab some Happy Meals. We eat in silence because I think we are all suffering from heat stroke by now. We decide to head to It's Tough to be a Bug for some AC. There is no wait and we are in our seats quickly. In 5 minutes flat, the baby is on Dad's lap and Anna is hiding on the floor. That movie is pretty intense. I loved it though. We exit to find the sky black and rumbles of thunder. We stand in indecision of our next move. We haven't even entered Africa yet, or Camp Mickey for that matter. I ask the kids what they want to do next and get a loud "go home" from everyone. The thunder is growing more intense, and I reluctantly decide to head for the exit. We stop for a Tree of Life photo before we go.

Tired Kids....
ak.jpg

ak3.jpg

We didn't beat the rain this time. We take the tram back to the van and head home with wipers going full blast. The kids take a nap and wake to find the storm past. We all jump into the pool again. No one wants to go back to AK or go out to dinner for that matter. We order pizza and the kids are asleep by 9.

I was bummed that no one wanted to return to AK. I knew that would be our only day this trip, but I was determined that fun and happy memories would win over Momma's plan. This was a day with many lessons learned. Always carry money and a phone. Kids must be in matching shirts. Wear a poncho regardless. Try to sit next to William on every ride possible! :rotfl:

Next installment-Chapter 6- Spectro-fantastic Day that ends with Wishes.

It's still not bad, but I could buy them at the outlet for that...

I bought our shirts on Jiffyshirts.com. They were about $2 a piece. I throw them in the washing machine, inside out, delicate cycle. I then line dry them.

I bought the transfer paper on eBay.

I was laughing so hard at your drama king on EE. He's stinkin' hilarious!
I almost got busted reading TRs when the family things I'm upstairs working on lesson plans for the fall. Not to mention our trip is a surprise for the kids, so I've been trying to hide all my planning, etc. You almost got me busted for busting up! ;)
Can't wait to read more...

Great installment! If you would have stuck the day out it only drizzled for a few minutes! We were able to walk into the Nemo show and had a great time!!!

We made our shirts too. We got them for around $2 each at Hobby Lobby...and they have them on sale a lot!

Your son is hiarious on EE :rotfl2: You must have been panicking when they got lost  You're totally right having happy kids is better than sticking to the plan :goodvibes
