Grocery Store Shelves Empty

I went to BJ's this morning, it was insane.
The line to checkout was over 1 hour long. There was some water left but ALL the meat was gone except the pre-packaged stuff like smoked sausages and hot dogs.
I just needed a few things (regular shopping) so I was blissfully unaware that the line of people snaking throughout the store was actually the checkout line. I got my stuff, asked someone about the line and then put all my stuff back.
Went to the grocery store which was definitely busier than usual but got all my stuff and was in and out within 15 minutes. It was crazy, I really think people think it's the end of days.

Yesterday I saw a lot of abandoned carts with food that could spoil. Guessing it was casual shoppers who realized that line of shoppers that snaked to the back of the store was the checkout line.

I saw carts around but didn't really notice what was in them. I had all perishables so I put them back, I hate when people leave that stuff lying around.

I rope dropped Kroger this morning. They opened at 6 and I got there about 5:58. There were about 25 or so people waiting for them to open. I had a pretty long list and was able to get most everything. There was pretty much no meat left - I guess they just unpacked some boxes of roasts and steaks because there was one little 2 foot section that was totally stocked. I was going to get some ground beef if they had it, but it isn't a huge deal - I still have a couple lbs in the freezer. The other thing that DH put on the list they were out of was pre-sliced cheese. He wanted some Swiss Cheese slices - the cheese slices were totally gone. They were out of Skim milk, but had 1%, so that was no big deal.

I didn't need toilet paper, but took a peek down that aisle anyway - there was a little bit on the shelves. I also took a peek down the cleaning aisle and there was a little bit of most things available there. Kroger has put a limit of 3 on TP, Cleaning Supplies, Soap and cold medicine.

My sister said the Kroger by her house was totally out of eggs - the one by my house had tons of eggs (so I got her a carton).

I went to Meijer to get wine yesterday, it was more like Black Friday than a typical Friday. That said, I got through the check out quicker than I would have Walmart on any typical day. I need to go to Aldi and get some stuff today. For whatever reason, I seem to have grown to just like Aldi food better than most other stuff. I love their various sparkling water drinks. It's so much cheaper than La Croix.

Good to hear so much was available for you!
LOL, I have no eggs because each time I've been to the large market where they are sold at a great price, I hadn't enough hands to keep them in a separate bag. March 1st started the plastic bag ban in NYS and it's weird thinking of getting groceries home in the old ways.

Wine, now your talking my style. Everything one would need to survive the apocalypse in a bottle.

I wonder how many of these people over-buying food actually eat most of their meals at home. They'll probably still go to restaurants anyway.

I’m SO glad I had the foresight to go to Market Basket Wednesday morning. It was really slow (by market basket standard) when I was there. Definitely the calm before the storm.

I worked ten years in grocery stores (left as a front end manager 5 years ago to be a SAHM). I have never been so relieved as I am right now to not work in that environment.

My plan is to go middle of the night if I need something. I shop at Winco and they are open 24 hours a day. The lines yesterday went from the front to the very back of the store.

I went to Trader Joe’s last night and the food was almost all gone. No meat, frozen food, milk, bread, canned food, pasta, etc. When I say there was none I mean not one thing in the frozen food cases, not one piece of meat, etc. I was talking to an older gentlemen from Beirut. He said he had been through 2 wars and a Civil War and has never seen anything like it. I went back at 7:30 AM today for an 8:00 AM opening. There were about 60 people on line by the time the store opened.

Remember at rope drop you may want to go counter clockwise. Skip over Adventureland and hit the Mountains in Frontierland. Or if your a fast Walker head straight to 7DMT or SM. But only if you are in front and can walk briskly. Or if you have little kids and the Train is running take it around to start your day in Fantasyland while working your way south.

Oh sorry wrong Rope Drop thread...I was day dreaming about WDW.

We went to Total Wine last night and their shelves were pretty sparse too. They were totally out of the wine that I like.

Do you like boones farm apple? We drank it in the early 70s . it was $1.00 for a quart
Is it even still made? I've outgrown Blue Nun, Boones, Scupbana (sp?), et al but will admit that earlier in my life all it had to taste like was cherry Koolaid with booze and I was fine. Oops.

What we've seen over the last 2 days in our area is that smaller, non-national chain grocery stores in smaller towns have way more merchandise.

We have a city here where people flock to go shopping and all the national and bigger regional stores up there are seeing more and more empty shelves.

But when we went to smaller in town stores, they were doing better. Mind you, they did have limits on some items, and they were out of disinfectant wipes. But they had plenty of toilet paper & water. They had plenty of diapers & wipes. They still had a good supply of OTC medications. Their entire front vestibule was filled with cases of water where they normally keep shopping carts!

I had a list, and with the exception of a few brand substitutions, I was able to fill my list at the smaller store this morning no problem. But yesterday afternoon in the bigger city at Aldi and a larger regional store there were several items on my list that I just couldn't get and many where I had to make substitutions of brand, size, flavor, type, etc.
