How long do you take to choose a card for a birthday/anniversary etc ?

I seem to take ages and I'll go from shop to shop and maybe even come home without one if I don't see the 'right' one!! I know I'm probably taking buying a card a bit too seriously, but does anyone else do the same??

There is an advert - can't remember what for - that shows the lady taking a lot of time to choose her partner a card but the partner only remembers when he sees one by the cashier and quickly buys it without a second thought!

Is it so that it is a male thing to buy them quickly - remembering to get one is the main thing? And the female thing is to try to choose a card that she thinks is most suitable??

I take an age Shirley I really do. The most recent one I had trouble buying for was a birthday card for my ex-husband - none of them seemed appropriate.

I know Paul takes a while to choose cards - we always exchange cards from the same range so he has to look for that range when he gets into the shop.

I often go into three or four shops looking for just the right one but I know DH just goes to the local shop (assuming he's remembered at all) and picks one. Mind you I'm the only one he buys for anyone else including his family and friends and it's delegated this way.

I always take an age selecting cards for special people and stand there for hours giggling to myself or going 'awh' (I'm sure much to the amusement of others nearby!!).

For the first time in many a year I'll be sending a couple of Valentine cards next month!! And I'm sure it'll take me hours to find just the right ones!!

I seem to spend ages, I know DH doesnt as he doesnt send them. Says they are a waste of money as they go in the bin after a couple of weeks!!!
He even refused to sign his Mums card(that I bought) so she could send it to someone else.

Not only do I go from shop to shop (whilst dh does his best not to look exasperated), I stand there blubbing at the soppy words!

I bought a card for my brother's birthday whilst in Orlando last week. I thought <i>we</i> had every event and and tenuous relationship covered, but I think I've seen them all now! (Although why is it you can buy Christmas cards 'to our dog', 'babysitter', 'teacher', 'neighbours', 'to a special friend', etc., but you hardly ever see any for 'friend<b>s</b>').

Anyway, I was searching through the 'to brother from sister' section (yes, really), blubbing at all the gush (which is 10 times worse in the US!). Having read about 5 increasingly effusive ones, I picked up the next - nice scene on the front with the words, "I remember growing up together...". I opened it up, expecting yet more gush ~

"... let me know when you've finished".





Had it been in the 'humour' section, I'd probably have just groaned, but it really tickled me and I stood there laughing uncontrollably. I was laughing so much, a few people nearby started laughing too. Every time I got myself together, I thought about it again and started laughing even more! In the end I had to leave the shop!

I start looking maybe 2-3 weeks beforehand, particularly if it's for someone special. I often spend my lunchtime in card shops, if I've nothing better to do, looking for appropriate cards to buy in advance. A few of the people I buy for have birthdays near special events, eg Valentines or Christmas, and it's impossible to get decent cards then!

Scotfan's husband: I've kept all my cards from my loved ones for at least the last 21 years, and wouldn't dream of throwing them away; but we never write on my mum's envelope so she can use it again.

Actually, I think I may have a paper fetish as I could easily spend all day looking at cards or books.

I often buy cards when I see them that I feel are just right for someone and store them until the right date. I then forget I've already bought one or, more usually, can't remember the "safe place" I put it and so have to rush out and buy another without much time to choose carefully.

Libby......... I'm very good at putting things in "safe places" too .. like the Cirque tickets for instance, but hey! I've actually found them - just in time!!
