Greek Life is like a family of sorts that you have during college. Not all campus' offer it, but those who have the opportunity to participate change their lives for ever. Being in a sorority or fraternity is like having sisters and brothers. Greek Life is a lifetime commitment and a lifetime blessing!

i understand what it is as far as a group of people together, but why? why do people join certain groups. I mean im sure its not look around and see what people i like, so ill join that frat. Is there certain common ground or something?

it is like real life family...we dont always match up perfectly and sometimes we disagree, but we love each other for who we are!

I have always been active in activities and volunteer work throughout high school and when I started college I wanted to continue that. I was lucky enough to find a group of girls who volunteer on a weekly bases and do a lot of work that helps out the community. I have always wanted to be apart of something bigger. I have sisters all over the country and all over the world that I am bonded to with a sisterly bond. I have done more volunteer work and I have been able to add more things to my resume in two years then most people can add in four years. Not to mention, I have met my best friends through my sorority and all my bridesmaids will be my sisters! Greek life is not for everyone but if you can find a great group you can feel comfortable in, a group that meets your needs and supports you then that is great!

I understand having a group of close people. I am in marching band at college and we are very close etc. What i was wondering is not why people want to be in a group, but what draws them to a specific group.

Thanks! This makes sense that everyone has a common goal/activity. I know there are like pre-med frats. Im assuming they all have the same long term goals, but do these types of groups help to prepare people or what? I think I am confused because people put on resumes that they were included in certain groups as if that by itself would help them get a job and seem more prestigeous.

There are different types of organizations that may bear the name of greek letters. Some are sororities and others maybe honor societies. Where as, I may be a member of a sorority I may also be a member of an honor society, such as the nursing honor society. Different sororities may have different goals or policies. They maybe socially based or based on philanthropy (to name a few). Some sororities have anti drinking policies where others do not. In some sororities all members share the same religion. As far as the resume question goes...Yes, I have sisters that have gotten jobs just because they wear a Phi Sig necklace to an interview and the person interviewing them had a niece at another university that was a member of Phi Sig. I did not join a sorority to get a job-I believe my GPA and nursing degree will get me a job. I joined a sorority to meet new girls on campus, to have a sisterly bond with members of the sorority and to give back to the community.

Thanks. This makes a lot of sense. Its not that im not familiar with these groups. I come froma larger university and they are all around. I just didnt understand what went on and what they were about. I was used to club and things like that. Its hard to tell what they are all about when its just greek letters. Thanks for the explanation, i appreciate you taking time to share with me.:thumbsup2

Hi there! I'm an alumni of Alpha Xi Delta.

Social fraternaties and sororities cover multiple purposes - one is obviously being able to meet a large group of new people. This can be especially helpful on a very large campus - it shrinks it down in size a little bit and gives you a group of people with like interests, etc. They also participate in phinanthropy and volunteering, which is a great experience and a great way to give back to the community. How does it prepare you for life down the road? Like in any group of people you may not like everyone involved - but you learn to work with all kinds of people and appreciate differences - this will be pretty invaluable in the workplace. Will it help you get a job? Maybe. Most people do not join a Greek organization in hopes that it will get them employment down the road, but you never know who might be an alumni. Many of the organizations now have online networking communities for their members which can be very helpful with job leads - the more people you have contact with the more information on openings you have access too.

There is also the benefit of alumni organizations - joining a Greek organization is not just for the college years - you can continue to be active as an alumni. I have found that my alumni organization is even more focusing on philanthropy and volunteering - we're able to donate time and money and really make a difference in our community. It's also a lot of fun to meet with my sisters of all ages and benefit from their knowledge, life experience and friendship.

Greek honor organizations may have closer ties to aiding in the job search, but it can vary greatly among them. They are a nice way to get involved with more people in your area of study and do look good on a resume. Employers do look at extracurricular activies - not necessarily looking for something specific, but you are able to maintain good grades and also be involved in other activities, that usually indicates that you can handle multiple tasks and are comfortable working with varying types of people.

It all comes down to the individual - when considering joining any club or organization, it's important to meet with the people already in it, learn about the requirements and activities and decide if it fits in with what you are looking for.
