Greatest Musical Entertainer of the 20th Century

I just watched "Purple Rain" for the 105,989th time--but the first time in awhile. I would have to add Prince to the list (maybe he has already been added??).

He was another revolutionist in the music biz. I remember when Purple Rain came out. We had never seen anyone quite like Prince. And he is a great entertainer in concert.

I don't know yet if anyone has answered,so I'll give it a try-Rest of the rat pack were Sammy Davis,Jr/Joey Bishop/Peter Lawford, and I think female members were Shirley MacLaine and Angie Dickinson.

As to a Dean Martin song-Everybody Loves Somebody sometimes

ya know, I love the rat pack; especially Dean Martin. My family laughs because my CD collection of Journey, KISS, Kid Rock, MJ, etc. includes a collection of Dean Martin hits. They find that just hilarious.

Anyway, I just wouldn't consider them some of the Greatest Entertainers of the 20th Century. They basically just did what everyone else was doing at the time. And all of them were basically the same. No cutting edge revolutionist of the music world or comedy biz or movie biz or anything.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I seriously hope someone nominated Elton John for consideration. He has charted on the Billboard Hot 100 more than any artist other than Madonna or the Beatles. Although I don't think he necessarily wins out, he definitely deserves to be mentioned.

If we're talking "entertainer" I think you have to exclude bands and focus on specific people. When I hear entertainer, I think "solo artist who is the focus of the act." If you want to include bands I think you have to call it something than "Greatest Entertainer." You'd have to say "Greatest Act" or something.

Well since there was no criteria set in the original question, you can't really argue with other people's responses. I'm late to the party here, so I'm stuck on the Garth thing. YES, I consider Garth one of the greatest entertainers of all time. I think he DID, in fact, break the mold of country music. I, personally didn't like country before Garth and I don't like country after Garth. But he did almost single-handedly influence the shape of today's country music, for better or worse. And as far as his skills as an entertainer, he had to have been the first rock-star country act (if you've seen him, you know!)

(And I am also holding my breath, awaiting his comeback!)

Other than him, I'm going to nominate Elton, MJ, Steven Tyler and Freddie Mercury in no particular order. Because I am entertained by them and I see them as standing out from the pack as far as entertainers go.
