Greatest Musical Entertainer of the 20th Century

I'm not so sure people are showing their age as much as the age of their tastes! :) My mother and father weren't that far apart in age, but their musical tastes were decades apart!

Not sure if it's been mentioned (sure he has), but as a fan I feel I must throw his name into the pool.

Bob Marley

The Beatles, Madonna and MJ as well would be on my list.

Of course, you mean Bub Marley:lmao: - a real entertainer according to my daughter along with the Phish.

How could I have forgotten Bob Marley!!!!!???!!

I know the Grateful Dead, its another band Ive heard of but couldnt name a song

Maybe YOU couldn't, but Jerry Garcia, along with the Grateful Dead, were and still are a HUGE influence on American music. That is fact, not opinion.

They were the founders of the Jam band genre. The Wall of Sound was specifically created for them. They toured nonstop for 30 years (2,500 concerts at least) with a HUGE cult following that continues to live on today. The Deadhead community that they created was and is unlike any other musical following. Jerry's guitar playing was among the best and he served as an influence for many musicians today.

Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead will live on as one of the most legendary bands ever. When he died, the band died, as he was the prime figure. It's been almost 15 years since his death and I still hear people mourn his death when they hear his music as if it were yesterday.

I don't the OP is necessarily disagreeing with people's choices... I think she/he is just commenting because it's his/her thread. I tend to do that a lot myself :goodvibes

:flower3:I don't mean any disrespect at all. It just confused me that the OP was questioning Jerry Garcia as an option.

Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Queen (Freddie Mercury), Michael Jackson...I think they all created good music.

I agree with every single one of your choices. I would also add the rest of the Rat Pack and Bob Dylan (I'm surprised he hasn't been mentioned :confused3) to that list. Also, I'd add Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden because of everything they did for the heavy metal scene. :rockband: :worship: (<-- he's headbanging, not bowing )

I agree about Bob Dylan! Especially for his songwriting :)

I guess my definition of "entertainer" is different than most. To me, it means a person who performs live and captures an audience.

Using that definition, I would say....

Frank Sinatra
Elvis Presley
Bruce Springsteen
Pavarotti
Aretha Franklin
MJ

Now, songwriters who have changed the musical world are different....

Lennon and McCartney
Bob Dylan
and assorted others....

I think dean Martin might be the only other member of the rat pack Ive heard of, and I cant even tell you one of his songs

I don't know yet if anyone has answered,so I'll give it a try-Rest of the rat pack were Sammy Davis,Jr/Joey Bishop/Peter Lawford, and I think female members were Shirley MacLaine and Angie Dickinson.

As to a Dean Martin song-Everybody Loves Somebody sometimes

Good start, but if we're talking about the Twentieth Century here, and sticking only to those with musical talent, how about we add a few more candidates from the early years, and even a later one or two:

Al Jolson
Josephine Baker
George M. Cohan
George Gershwin
Benny Goodman
Cole Porter
Irving Berlin
Bing Crosby
Fred Astaire
Richard Rodgers
Louis Armstrong
Paul Robeson
Judy Garland
Jerry Lewis
Doris Day
Nat King Cole
Tony Bennett
Bobby Darin
Sammy Davis, Jr.
Burt Bacharach
Jimmy Webb
Barbra Streisand
Carole King
John Williams
I'd have to add Glenn Miller to the group if we're talking about early years.
My second half of the 20th Century list would include Michael Jackson, Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Denver, Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks (even though I'm not crazy about his music....he puts on a great show) and Bon Jovi.
