So with all the talk of Michael Jackson dying (R.I.P.) I was wondering who everyone thought was the greatest entertainer of the 20th Century?

I think its a close tie between Jackson, Elvis, and Billy Joel

I would post a poll but I think we're going to get a large variety of answers

I would have to say MJ because he was so popular and influential all over the world.

It really hard for me to just name one

ELvis
Beattles
Elton John
Garth Brooks
Madonna

Garth?

Don't get me wrong I like country, as well as him, but as a mainstream artist.....he may have sold x amount, but his artistry is no where near the others listed I don't think.

ETA - I think more along what I am thinking - when did Garth go out on a limb to break barriers, molds, etc? Madonna, EJ, the Beatles, Elvis all went against the grain at some point in a more extreme way.

Yeah that!

Madonna, the Rolling Stones for their touring stamina, The Beatles for pure writing talent, Tina Turner....there really are a lot of them.

He is also listed as the best-selling artist of the Nielsen Soundscan era (from 1991 onwards), with approximately 67,774,000 albums sold (as of April 5, 2008).[3] He is second only to The Beatles in the United States to me that is a huge DEAL

selling and artistry are two different categories to me. Just as another poster said in the other thread Britney has sold a few too! :thumbsup2

Don't buy it. Garth is the tear in the beer music.....the others you listed are in a completely different artistic category no matter where the sales are.

Frank Sinatra!

I'm a big fan, so I just want to make sure he gets at least one vote!

:)

I personally would like to vote for Iggy Pop, but I think the Rolling Stones could easily win this contest.

We shall just agree to disagee then I gues

I thought of him today.... the night he died was a beautiful warm night and my DH and I drove to Hoboken listening to "summer wind" ..

and we are not big fans... but he was a jersey Guy...

I don't think anyone at all can top Michael Jackson in Icon status. Even the poorest kids in countries you've never even heard of know who Michael Jackson was.

Others who come close I'd think would be:

Madonna
Elton John
Garth Brooks
Britney Spears
Aretha Franklin
Frank Sinatra
Elvis
The Beatles

hmmm I tried not to just copy someone else's list but these are the main ones I can think of. They are the ones with true Icon status to me. I love Billy Joel, and yeah Tina Turner is big...but I don't see them having the icon status of the people listed above.

I think Aretha is a great choice.

Elvis

The Beatles
Michael Jackson
Cher
Celion dion
Madonna
Garth Brooks

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Barbara...I wouldn't put her on my list though.

The Beatles. They changed music, with music they created. They wrote their songs and played their own instruments. Before they did it it was unusual for acts to create their own stuff.

They influenced not only mustc, but fashion as well.

IMO, no one comes even close to them, and what they did in the XX century

ETA to add this tribute to them in a Russian town 40 years after they disbanded

Barbara....Streisand? *shudder*

how about Puff Daddy, erm P.Diddy, Diddy, Did...D..... :p

j/k

When I think of who put the whole package together, who could sing, dance, choreograph, put on great shows, etc. then that leaves Elvis, MJ, Madonna, The Beatles
