My daughter needed a prom-type dress for an event she's participating in. I certainly didn't have the money to go and buy one at any of the stores so I decided to hit our local thrift shop to see what we could come up with.

We went, not really counting on finding anything amazing but how lucky did we get! We found a beautiful gown that I never would have expected to see there! Better yet? It was on the $10 gown clearance rack!!!! (I'm thinking they were trying to get rid of all the prom gowns) Why no one bought this is beyond me. It is in perfect condition and is so beautiful! Nothing gaudy or obnoxious -- just a beautiful gown. On top of everything else? It fit my daughter perfectly so I don't have to pay for any alterations!

(of course, when I got home, I just had to go online and find out how much it would have cost so I looked up the brand and the dress. Brand new, it would have gone for $150-$180. Nice!!!!)

Wonderful! Love those kinds of finds! Will you post a photo?

I don't know how to post photos here, but I'll try to figure it out. If not, I can post a link to the site where I saw the price of the dress.

it 'weirds' some people out but I'm always suggesting Goodwill (and similar shops) as great places to shop. Especially (IMO) for off beat things you may wear just once.

Great find - congratulations!

Nice! Now you might feel a little more comfortable buying all of those cute accessories.

Thank you :)

I love thrift shops and have gotten some great finds at them! A few years back, I had gotten my daughter a brand new (with tags!) Hello Kitty rain coat ---- it was like an overcoat, but it was light blue with pink hearts sprinkled about and, of course, Hello Kitty in the middle of the back and a small Hello Kitty on the front. It was ahhh-dorable! How much? $3!

I have no problems in shopping at thrift stores. I don't know why some people have such issues with it. The only thing I won't purchase at them are shoes (unless they're absolutely brand new). Other than that? It's really unbelievable some of the stuff you can find there!

I love looking in the book section now. I found a Economics book for 1.24 (our professor said he didn't care where we got one as long as we got one) and a 2010 unofficial guide to WDW for 1.98  There wasn't a thing wrong with it either :)

That's great. I plan on hitting thrifts and consignments when we get to prom age. Of course I hit them all the time as it is! The girls see the gowns and want to buy prom dresses NOW! (They have a few years to go!)

My sister's wedding was on a real shoestring budget. We were at a hole in the wall consignment and they mentioned they had a white tux and shoes for sale. We laughed and said, "Oh the groom is 6'3" with a long body and short legs, and wears size 13 shoes." Well, it fit him, shoes and all. I don't remember the price but it was probably $5 or $10.

DS is moving into an apartment-style dorm this fall, with three roommates that he doesn't know (he met two at orientation yesterday!). Goodwill does a discount scratch card every month on the 15th -- we went today and got a three-light floor lamp for $7, two really nice curtain panels for $12, glasses, a popcorn bowl and a few other things (almost got a beautiful leather recliner for $25 -- another couple saw it just a second before we did as it was being brought out and they bought it, darn). Then we got the 15% scratch-off discount and an additional 5% Goodwill Club (this is free) discount! We plan to check back regularly for the other things he's supposed to bring!
