Great Movie Ride Closing August 13

What's going to happen to FastPasses that are after the closure date? I'm just going to keep mine because I am curious what will happen.
Don't know if anyone answered this yet, but I just got the "we've switched your experience" emails ... to the Muppets

So annoying, they would only have to wait 6 more months and they would have Toy Story Land there and it wouldn't be as big a deal. I will also be there in September and was looking forward to this ride.

Broke the movie ride news to DH, since it's one of his "must-do's" while in DHS. He took the news surprisingly well. Then again he might be taking a "Vader at the Dinner Table" approach... Happy that plans for other rides weren't altered any further. :darth:

I made the mistake tonight about telling my 3 girls about the closure. Screams and tears all over. Apparently it is one of the absolute favorite rides of my 10, 8, and 6 year old. Who knew?

I do think it is sad as it is unique and goes to what a "Hollywood studios" is about.

I hear ya... Honestly, GMR isn't my favorite, although I do like it. But when I told my 5-year-old daughter she started crying. Broke my heart! She loves that ride so much.

I understand that some people are sorry to see GMR go; we all have our favorite attractions and would be upset to learn that they were being replaced. Personally, GMR had become a filler ride for me. I might rope drop RnRC and need something to do before my TSMM FP+ and head for GMR to kill time. I enjoy the film in the queue more than the ride itself. I'm ready for a change, though I hope there is no change to the facade of the Chinese theater.

I'm going the 11th and the 15th. Now I have to make sure I hit the ride on the 11th as my son love the ride. I'm debating changing a fast pass on the 15th to Great movie ride if its still offered. Reason being they would likely make it an any pass or risk massively upset customers that can't get another fast pass. Of course knowing Disney they probably just say too bad so sad.

I'm 99% sure that here shortly they'll go ahead and cancel all GMR fast passes. I don't see them leaving it and then it turning into an anytime FP. I'd anticipate them cancelling them within the next week

Edit: looks like they already started this morning

My daughter is 20 and is going to sob when I inform her of this. She's been visiting WDW since she was 2 and this is one of her all-time favorites. Thank goodness we are going next week and we can visit one last time  I'm so sorry for those who won't make it.

I thought it played to a demographic that doesn't really exist anymore -- the old-time movie buff. I see a lot of movies, and a lot of old movies, but even I missed some of the references. Those old movies don't hold the same appeal they did even a decade ago, and I think they're smart to replace it with the only ride that actually features the iconic figure on which the whole thing is based. It may end up sucking, but at least there will be a ride that's about Mickey -- something that WDW has lacked.

DHS was built to be a working movie studio with a few rides, like Universal California. When that didn't happen, they've been trying to figure out what to do with the real estate ever since. The more they get away from the original idea of nostalgically looking backward, the more likely they are to have a viable fourth park option. Toy Story and Star Wars are their IPs -- they can always make them relevant to new generations. But those old movies were frozen at their moment of creation, and while I think it's sort of sad to lose the idea of this ride, in reality it was a slow-moving trip filled with scenes and references than 90 percent of goers either didn't get, or only got because they'd seen the image somewhere before. How maybe people have actually seen Public Enemy? Or anything with James Cagney? Yet the whole scenario of the ride was old-time gangster movies, which no one watches anymore. So I know it stinks ks to lose another ride over there for the short term, the faster all of DHS can move on from it's failed and mangled original mission, the better.

I am sad to see it go. It definitely needed updating, but ranks among the classics for my family. We rode it every trip, and it was the iconic DHS ride. It is outdated...in fact, every year I'd pledge to watch some of those old movies before our next trip...and then say it again on our next trip! I wish I could ride it once more before it closes, but it will be long gone by November. I also wish they staggered the closures. Why couldn't they wait until Toy Story opened so there is more to do? Not sure we could fill a whole day there anymore. Oh well... time to look ahead and get excited about future attractions!

I booked a last minute trip for August. I'm glad I'll get one more ride on GMR and Universe of Energy. Haven't been on either in years but will enjoy them for old times' sake.

It sucks. It's DDs favourite ride and I'm so disappointed they've closed it on virtually zero notice :(

I'm very sad to see this go. For the last couple years, I've told myself "Enjoy this, because it might be your last time riding it" before we would ride each trip. I did the same thing two weeks ago and I guess I was finally right. What a bummer.

I knew it was going and was disappointed so when we were there in March, we asked a CM if we could step aside and watch the movie from beginning to end, which we did. My son and I ride it a couple of times a trip. It looks like they are trying to gear HS more toward the kids, which is what MK is. I loved the old Hollywood feel of the park and am going to miss it. Will we still go, sure, even though I'm not a Star Wars fan I enjoy the shows and I've only seen the first Toy Story so not sure how I'll feel about a whole land. I always appreciated the movies they show cased on the ride. Have I seen all the old 30s and 40s ones? Nope but a little history never hurt anyone and if that is the only way you get your kids to see some of it, works for me. We will be there for a quick long weekend trip the first weekend in August so we'll catch a couple more rides on it. We actually were going so my son could see Avatar and that was the only time we could schedule before UGA starts back for fall semester. We weren't planning on spending a lot of time in the other parks other than AK and we rarely make FPs in advance but I guess I'll grab a couple for GMR on different days.

My girls play going to WDW. One of the rides they reenact with stuffed animals etc is GMR. Just D8 and I arrive the 12th so can go one last time. We have a 4 hour flight but I am ashamed to admit that I was running airfare this morning so our whole family of 5 could go one more time. (We have AP's). Not going to do it, but it is sad.

On the FP issue I got the replacement for Muppets but also an anytime FP for the same date. I was able to change the Muppet FP to TSMM but still have the anytime FP. Has anyone else seen that? Seems kind of odd to have both.

I am so excited for the new Mickey themed ride and I LOVE that it is going to be done in the style of the Disney shorts. I liked GMR, but it's time for something new!

Well I'm glad we were able to ride it one last time on our trip a few weeks ago - and that we finally got to see the western version! I am very sad that it is closing though, I was thinking maybe they were going to just update it with newer movies.

We've all just taken a moment...

Had heard it maybe on its way out ,but seriously thought it would coincide with toy story land or star wars land openings..
Just can't comprehend closing in mid august :scared:

So, increase my pain-what are the dates of closure for Ellen and figment?
Not hotly cool nor coolly hot.:guilty:
