Great experience Davids Rental

Hi ,
Just to update.... Wow BRV points are so in demand at this booking window!!!
Wound up renting more points for a total of 3 separate reservations.
Now i have FOMO and want to go LMAO!!

Anyway question?
Is this how Dis'ers get paid here when they rent out points?
I had to open paypal account to get paid.
My first payment came 12/31/24.
Next two payments Jan 2025.

Paypal asks for my tax ID now,
The Law changed 2025 apparently.

2024 $5000 ok to earn before 1099 issued
- All good with that amount
2025 $2500 ok to earn before 1099 issued.
-Now my 2nd payments of last 30% due at checkin will out that OVER the $2500:-(

So now i will have my mom open account to get 2nd payments which will be just under the threshold.

Forgive me for my ignorance about this, 1st time i have "extra income"
With everyone selling stuff facebook etc is paypal the usual payment method nowadays?
Thanks

The only reason the 1099 is issued is to document that you've received a payment that may have tax implications. It does not change whether or not you have a tax liability.

And...you have a tax liability. I would not recommend trying to skirt the reporting requirements in hopes of not paying taxes.

Hmmmm
Am i not understanding the law?
2024 no 1099 issued till over $5,000.
2025 no 1099 issued till over $2500.

Are you saying i will still receive 1099?
Or that i should report even if i dont get a 1099?
Thanks

I think the point is that whether you receive a 1099, you are required to report it as income.
Oi vay! Gotcha.....Minion here makes a few extra bucks never even thinking of Taxes.... Duh.... im thinking like a yard sale. Lol
Unless its cash everything is traceable.

Curios is paypal the method used on the boards here? Or do people send checks?
I wont be renting for many years again if ever just curious:-)
Thanks

Honestly, I am not sure what people use now but I did use it when I rented to someone years ago.

We bought a few rentals in recent years. I used debit/credit card with brokers. Used PayPal Friends/Family and Zelle when dealing directly with an owner. Almost 10 years ago was the last time we sent a check for a DVC rental.

We’ve only rented our points once. For that I received electronic check to deposit.

When we rented our points (Not through Davids) we were given a few options, PayPal and Zelle as the preferred as payment would be faster than sending a check. So I believe it’s common. Also if Davids if doing it correctly they would give you a 10-99 themselves, so you would get one even if PayPal didnt issue them. But yes the recent changes to the digital payment platforms is really annoying and I hope they change it this year to something more reasonable.

David’s will not give a 10-99 as they are not required to do so being a Canadian company.

DVC Rental Store will since they are based in the US. (Not sure if you have seen where they mention they are the largest renter in the US but not largest renter)

But isn't their only payment method PayPal which will ding you?
Define ding.

They do not ding you on the money received via PayPal they pay all fees.

If you are talking about PayPal sending out a 10-99 being a ding I guess so but DVC Rental Store would also send one out.

Income is Income.
Doesn't matter the form and in the US we are taxed on income earned which would include proceeds from renting points.
There are some deductions that can offset some of the income but you can go over with your accountant.
