Grease Live is on this Sunday

I wonder if the carnival games were originally supposed to be outside too but they changed it for the rain. Overall I think they blew those NBC shows out of the water. I loved how they didn't take themselves too seriously. Much better casting, and having an audience made a huge difference.

Upcoming live musicals:
Dirty Dancing
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Hairspray

I'm really only interested in Hairspray.

Grease is my favorite movie of all time. I went in very skeptical and even a bit mad they were attempting this. I have to say I was pretty impressed. Star of the show for me was Vanessa Hudgens as Rizzo. Her singing was spot on.

Julianne Hough leaving out the "t" every time she sang the word devoted on Hopelessly Devoted really chapped my hide.

Other than that, and some other minor moments when I yelled "nope" and "wrong" at the tv screen, I was shocked at how fun that was to watch.

It was advertised as rain or shine. I don't know with where folks were performing in the outdoor part, all of those games would have fit.

But the audience makes an incredible amount of difference.

It wasn't the total disaster the first 15 minutes led me to believe it would be. But a C+ at best.

The best part was reading some of these comments here calling the 1978 film the "original" Grease. :rotfl2:

Not surprising. On other forums posters said the same thing about The Sound of Music live a few years ago.

How many people do you think saw the 1973 play? To me, the movie is the original.

I really enjoyed the show and thought everyone did a wonderful job! I do think some of the performers looked too old to be playing high-school students (Sandy and Marty)! I loved the actor playing Danny! He was very, very good and an excellent dancer! Rizzo was also spot-on.

I loved the added line by the principal- "Do you think it will rain?" or something like that. And did anyone else catch the mistake by Mario Lopez? When he was on the stage announcing the rules, he very clearly said "American Bandstand" instead of "National Bandstand". Too funny!

The very , VERY original was in '71...then on to Broadway. I think the Kingston held maybe 300 people, lol...so not a ton saw it in '71 but it was for sure, a huge hit. Lots of people saw it multiple times. I knew on girl who's sister went every weekend..but again, it was not as tame as the Broadway and movie versions :rolleyes1

Oops!! LOL That one golf cart almost tipped.

I could see that they cut the corner too sharply and was waiting for the disaster to happen. Fortunately they stayed upright.

Yes. I caught both of those.

Overall the show improved from my first opinion an hour in. Not comparing it to the movie or any other live production I saw, but judging it on its own I'll give it a B.

Overall I thought it was going to be better. I dunno why but untill the very end when everyone was SO into it they all seemed like they were just going through the motions. Danny for me fell flat and it kills me because I loved him in Les Mis and on Broadway. He's so good but I dunno if this just wasn't a good role for him or what. Other than that and compared to Peter Pan and sound of music this was cast well.

The one girl was like moaning myrtle from Harry Potter and it killed me whenever she spoke. And what year was this supposed to be? Was it the traditional Grease year because half the time it felt torn between that and current hipsters. The t-birds are BAD ***. These guys were not.

I either missed Hound Dog or they just didn't do it?

I was disappointed in a lot of the sets, especially for the one that I want. They should've just done it outside because that set was amazing. Also it would've avoided he whole golf cart thing because what was that?! I kept groaning every time I saw ANOTHER gym scene! Those last two songs were the best and the cast seemed really happy it was over lol. It was true emotion that I wish they had since the beginning.

I actually thought the car race was great. For live TV I was interested to see how they were going to do it and I thought they utilized what they had well.

I only got to see the first 15 minutes "live" and had to DVR the rest, but based on the comments from you guys sounds like it was decent

On the whole, I enjoyed it. I wasn't impressed with the opening, and the sound problems were unfortunate. But I really liked the performances by most of the main characters. Hudgens' Rizzo was excellent. I think my main complaint would be the costumes. The costume designer didn't earn his/her salary - all they did was to try to clone the movie. That's just plain lazy. But by and large it was a happy way to spend a Sunday night.
