Grassley, AIG, suicide

It seems like Citi Bank and Bank of America are doing better now and do not want additonial bail out monies now that strings were attached.

Just my 2 cents.

Indeed, BofA will not be accepting any more TARP money and has, in fact, already made their first payment back to the government to try to get the debt paid off as quickly as possible.

What a despicable thing to say. That is suggesting people who feel at the end of their rope should commit suicide.

No one is sympathetic to AIG workers, but recommend they kill themselves? :sad2:

I would have no idea. It's the first time I have heard anything about it.

Ummm, I have never said "Kill yourself" to anyone. I can't fathom why someone would say that to anyone. Anger or not I don't find it humorous to kid about death, especially suicide. It doesn't sound like an insult, it sounds like something a deranged person would say. :confused3

I haven't said it either, but I heard it when I was in high school. Its nothing 'new'. I am sure that the person saying it, and the person hearing it didn't literally. I am sure they didn't "like" each other after the exchange of words, but I would bet that no one actually died.
The problem with the "outrage" in Congress and the White House, is that they knew what was in these contracts last year. Chris Dodd's amendment, not to touch the bonuses was added to the TARP, so this feigned outrage is laughable.

Ok, I'll be the heartless one. The dude summed up my feelings on the matter acurately. Frankly, if the names of these execs get out, they can expect (at best) death threats, vandalism to their home and property (naturally it ain't right, but I can almost guarantee it will happen).

Any of the execs who accets DIME ONE of these "bonuses" is a ______ (insert non-DIS-Approved word). I have no sympathy for any of them. THEY aren't at the end of their rope, as someone suggested. The guy merely pointed out that the SHAME and DISHONOR they brought upon themselves and their company is so tremendous. In Japan, execs publicly apologize and resign or commit suicide for such offenses.

There I said it.

And that is exactly what Senator Grassley is saying!!! Thank you!!!!!

It is totally hypocritical because Grassley knew what he was voting for. All of these people who are receiving bonuses have already lost their jobs. They received "retention" bonuses to keep them on the job until the work of restoring the company was accomplished. They could have been out looking for work, working elsewhere, etc. but they are staying on the job. The purpose of the bailout was to keep the company solvent. Part of keeping the company solvent is keeping the people in place that know how to make it happen. This is just grandstanding by the president and congress for something that they already knew.

A little harsh, but maybe not such a bad idea after all....... :lmao:

So what if they all walked off, went somewhere else when they knew they were losing their jobs. What then? Could YOU fix it? :confused3

Probably do a better job then the idiots that got them into the mess in the first place. :rotfl:

A lot of them that were there, are there no more. No Chucky Schumer is planning on taxing those who accept the bonuses 100%. What happened to "equal protection" under the law.

A novel idea - pay them millions to come up with insurance products they didn't understand, then pay them millions to come up with a fix that hasn't been determined yet.

Without AIG's insurance, derivative products couldn't have grown anywhere near as big as they did and this mess would simply not exist or at least wouldn't be the same magnitude.

AIG didn't understand the risk (no one did) and were compensated for complete failure. Hard to justify that.

You know, if our government hadn't bailed out AIG in the first place, when it went bankrupt it would have had the ability to break the contracts of all these fat cats and re-organize itself into a leaner, more competitive company.

But no, we told the fat cats, keep doin' whatcha doin', and when they did all of a sudden we, the american people, are crying foul.

We SAW how they did business and we STILL gave them the money, what else should we expect?

Now they're going to sue, and there goes more money...

I hate to admit it, but there's a whole heckuva lot of truth in those words.

It was tasteless, no doubt reflects the sentiment of many taxpayers, but uncalled for.

Exactly :thumbsup2 (dang Dawn,I agree with you again ;) )

He could have worded his disapproval in a more tactful way.:guilty:

And unfortunately, comments such as his, the grandstanding on Capital Hill, Dodd "pretending" he wasn't there, the White House pretending they "weren't aware", has resulted in the need for body guards for those employees who are doing what they were retained (with bonuses) to do. Its just a big distraction that tugs as "populist" heart strings and is meaningless.

Stupid statement by the Senator but the sentiment was understood.

In the meantime, we give AIG billions to get out of the HOLE that the executives caused by poor managing.

Then we complain that the same executives were given HUGE bonuses. According to their CEO, they deserve the bonuses because it is part of their contract and his hands were tied.
Our country REWARDS poor performance with $$$$$$, great idea :confused3
Some have said that since it was a contract there was no choice, BUT

had the GOV'T not freely given our hard earned tax dollars to them TWICE, they would have gone under and guess what, then they would NOT have gotten any bonuses for their failures.
Either they get gobbled up by others or they LOSE, its called free enterprise!!

Instead we give em MORE $$ and then complain they gave it away.

Meantime, AIG is an INSURANCE company, 90% of their assets are INSURANCE related and was doing well it was the other 10% that RAN itself into the ground, imagine that 10% of their business took down 90%,
what does that say............GREED comes to mind
And we'll all pay for it, and then let our kids pay for it too, SHARE the debt:mad: and continue to pay for it.

I say, you have a business... you FAIL to manage it properly, then you better HOPE that it gets bought out or you LOSE out, not get rewarded and then re-rewarded for your total incompetence, greed or whatever caused the failure.

If one more person tells me that the bonuses only amount to a small part of our $$ that was given to them I truly might PUKE!!
I want NO part of my money given as a bonus where it is not deserved.

I am so DISGUSTED by the bailouts and even more disgusted with all the grandstanding of our gov't! Goodness will we never learn???? :sad1:

These guys failed. They don't deserve bonuses. And I don't think I shuold have to pay for their bonuses. They are capable, let them find work elsewhere. My grandpappy worked 4 jobs at the age of 2 years old, and he took night classes as well. He never asked for a handout from the American taxpayer. If he could do it, AIG executives could do it.

Arent there laws against that :confused3 ;) Just teasin.

I agree, AIG execs don't need any taxpayers money period!

Grassley is right on target. All these white collar executives are no different than common criminals. Bonuses should never be given to employees at any level unless the company is turning a profit. It's caledl profit sharing. Best to be rid of these criminals that have brought the country to its knees.
